Even with words like _fail, no_ and _@*#%!$_ in the title, a Jörg Sprave video never fails to make our day, no matter how cold, cloudy and @*#%!$ it may be outside.
This is kinda cool to show that not everything goes perfect, that your projects have development, failures. Just showing the final and perfect result hides all the process behind it and makes it look easy to do. But it is not. I think this is a cool kind of video to show from time to time, to remind people that building weapons is a long and difficult journey.

@@EnthalpyAndEntropy They hated it then, once they begin working and has to solve a bunch of issues, I bet they are glad they had some inkling of what would happen. Educations has its flaws when it comes to real world implementation, be it engineering, or my fields networking and security. So getting some real world into the mix is surely needed. Having Joerg go through all these "fails" which really aren't fails as long as he learned something from them. Then it's just exhaustive practical iterative concept testing. But going through and having to fix issues is part of what someone evolve as a designer, especially when it comes to making practical things without physics modelling before hand.
This guy is a true legend. Not only will he show us his inventions but also he will show us when and how it went wrong when some of them didn't work. That's what I'd call genuine honesty. Keep up the good work, Joerg!
I think, everybody who ever made some wooden or metallic weapons like you, have encountered those kinds of failures. I made a few weapons, from folding knifes to crossbows, and I even made a full aluminum and fiberglass compound bow with a homemade sliding instant Legolas on it. On every projects, I had to build and rebuild some parts 2, 3, 4, even 5 times for certain pieces. The more difficult part is not the engineering. It's to never surrender. And this is why I admire you. You always showed us some functionals weapons, and it means that for every weapons you made, you just came over those difficulties (maybe not this much than for this project) and ended up on something functional. You also encountered serious difficulties due to TH-cam policy and you are today still entertaining us. You inspired met make weapons on my own, 10 years ago,i was still in school. I discovered that I love working with my hands. so I decided to do an apprenticeship in the metal industry. Plus, your videos helped me learning English. Due to all of this, and your honest and kind personality, I thank you a lot, Joerg, for all your work
At least you attempted something and I appreciate that you also showed us the issues along the way. I’m sure that once you step back from it for a few that you’ll figure out what needs to be done. Oh, Joerg. I'm so sorry - I can see your pain here and I know how frustrating this must have been... But that series of clips of the weapon breaking in different and increasingly comical ways is just very funny. I hope you were able to laugh in the end! Great video all the same.
Don't worry buddy! Treat it as a valuable lesson and opportunity to learn! Failure is only when you not take conclusions from mistakes and repeat them again. This the way we improve and become better. And I'm proud of you because you have the cojones to share this and it takes courage and it really shows that you are humble and great and real person like every normal human beings. And you have given me not only plenty of laughs, but have given me so many ideas, and the hope that I can actually do stuff like this myself. Times have been, really tough the past couple years. But your videos give me plenty of laughter, that laugh is infectious, haha. Been slowly saving up spare change for an Adder. By far the coolest crossbow I have ever seen. Hopefully be able to snag one up soon. I'm glad none of the failures hurt you. I've seen too many people who decide to 'wildcat' a weapon or process and it cost them a piece of finger up to their lives. One guy told me I was being a worrywart, I grabbed him by the collar and dragged him towards me, he thought I wanted to fight, but I'd seen his 'project' was about to fulfill it's lifelong ambition of becoming a cloud of hot gas. As the echos faded, I just grinned at him.
I love your honesty, most youtubers would not show their failures or how long they spent figuring things out... Ps Arnie at his peak was an absolute beast, but I do believe Lou Ferrigno was robbed in the film 'pumping iron', it seemed it was a political and marketing move that gave Arnie the advantage.
I agree. Lou Ferrigno was also one of the nicest people I've ever met. When me and my brothers were kids, he was starring in The Incredible Hulk TV show, and did an appearance at the World of Wheels car show in Miami. My younger brother was deaf, as Lou is, so he was my brother's hero. We waited in line for an autograph, and when we got to meet him my brother started speaking to him in AMSLAN, (sign language). Lou spent about 10 minutes talking to him, which my brother never forgot. I always loved Ferrigno for that. Sorry, don't mean to ramble. I think that Arnold was given bonus points for being an Austrian, and he also had rich "sponsors" that helped push his popularity. Lou never really got any other big roles after The Hulk, but at least it seems he'll never be forgotten as being the best Hulk ever.
Failure is just a learning experience as I'm sure you know well from all the great designs you have come up with! I'm just glad you didn't hurt yourself!! You'll come up with solutions after a night or two sleeping on the problem, at least that's how my problem solving mind works.
I think this is great! This is properly testing the limits of materials and construction methods to find out what's viable and what isn't. Finding out what doesn't work is often more important than finding out what DOES work.
Your persistence in trying to fix this thing so many times is what's most impressive to me. I will be interested to see what version two looks like now that you have a much better idea of how many different points of failure your design has.

Honestly, seeing the frustration with development is important. Lots of the time TH-cam makes it look like every project works out 100% the first time, leading to unreasonable expectations for beginner tinkerers. This is still great content.
It's so easy to back seat drive and to see a video an point out what went wrong. Much easier than being the actual person in the moment. That said, I'm guessing the point of failure is just that when you upped the power (stronger bands), you didn't account for some of that energy being spent back into the crossbow itself. Either way, I'm sure that you'll get it working in no time.

But I‘m also pretty sure that the next model will not only improve the weak points, it will get some extras too. 💪🏼 (Maybe a slowed down sled for the cocking hook, to not have to wind it manually down…).

One of your videos that I remember the most is way back when you made a rubber powered press. The thing that sticks in my memory is how dangerous it was. I remember seeing your hands shake from adrenaline when activating it. Especially after the "safety device" you use to activate it from a distance broke. Seeing the failures can be interesting. Not that I want you to endanger yourself, but seeing the things that go wrong makes for some good variety. I'd love to see more of the early making process for things. The failures. The learning process.

I'm amazed with how much you've made with plywood and how durable they have been with what you're putting them through. If those were milled from aluminum they might hold up longer, but I don't see them as failures just setbacks.

Sometimes failure causes greater advances in designing and building things, since if it worked fine the first time you would not try to improve it. With the amount of groundbreaking creations Joerg has developed, the fact that his failure rate is so low is amazing in and of itself. Keep going, Joerg. I enjoyed seeing this part of the process as much as seeing the successes!
This was a great watch! Very entertaining, and it's great to see how you persevere with doing what you love to do, and actually show us how much effort this takes to do!
Just too much power in those bands for the materials you were using it looks like. Still even accomplishing that much with a prototype is AMAZING man. No one faults you for getting angry when the prototype starts to fail. It happens to all of us regardless of the work we are doing. Murphy's Law we all know by heart for a reason. I think you do have something quite cool on your hands as an idea that could be a commercial success. The fact you do these on a shoe-string budget by yourself that other companies spend millions on and a lot more man-hours shows how much of a genius you really are. Trust me on this.

It's good to see this part of the engineering process. You're working with such high forces, you're finding all of the limits of your materials. Project failures are instructive, it's just a bit painful for a bit. But I look forward to version 2 when you figure out solutions to those issues!
It looks as if you found the strength limitations of the materials you are working with. From an R&D stand point it worked great Now as my old boss used to say "Well back to the drawing board "

That said, I'm guessing the point of failure is just that when you upped the power (stronger bands), you didn't account for some of that energy being spent back into the crossbow itself. Either way, I'm sure that you'll get it working in no time.

I can feel your frustration after so much work on that weapon. But I‘m also pretty sure that the next model will not only improve the weak points, it will get some extras too. 💪🏼

One of your videos that I remember the most is way back when you made a rubber powered press. The thing that sticks in my memory is how dangerous it was. I remember seeing your hands shake from adrenaline when activating it. Especially after the "safety device" you use to activate it from a distance broke. Seeing the failures can be interesting. Not that I want you to endanger yourself, but seeing the things that go wrong makes for some good variety.
I'd love to see more of the early making process for things. The failures. The learning process.

I'm amazed with how much you've made with plywood and how durable they have been with what you're putting them through. If those were milled from aluminum they might hold up longer, but I don't see them as failures just setbacks.
This. The design draw weight has found the limits of the material, that's all. Time to move on to aluminum and carbon fiber composite, Joerg.
@@markfergerson2145 2 brittle materials not a good idea. I sometimes think he needs better joinery or maybe steel but aluminium and carbon fibre? Do you just want to see him get hurt?

Sometimes failure causes greater advances in designing and building things, since if it worked fine the first time you would not try to improve it.
With the amount of groundbreaking creations Joerg has developed, the fact that his failure rate is so low is amazing in and of itself.
Keep going, Joerg. I enjoyed seeing this part of the process as much as seeing the successes!

This was a great watch! Very entertaining, and it's great to see how you persevere with doing what you love to do, and actually show us how much effort this takes to do!
Just too much power in those bands for the materials you were using it looks like. Still even accomplishing that much with a prototype is AMAZING man. No one faults you for getting angry when the prototype starts to fail. It happens to all of us regardless of the work we are doing. Murphy's Law we all know by heart for a reason. I think you do have something quite cool on your hands as an idea that could be a commercial success. The fact you do these on a shoe-string budget by yourself that other companies spend millions on and a lot more man-hours shows how much of a genius you really are. Trust me on this.

It's good to see this part of the engineering process. You're working with such high forces, you're finding all of the limits of your materials. Project failures are instructive, it's just a bit painful for a bit. But I look forward to version 2 when you figure out solutions to those issues!
