  • My last day in North Carolina I took the Marlin 6 on a long distance ride, (about 45 miles with the return trip), on the American Tobacco Trail from it's southern most trail head. This is an overview of what you'll encounter if you ride the entire trail from south to north. It's a beautiful ride from rural North Carolina to Downtown Durham.

    I’ll try this trail on my road bike. I’ve wanted to ride from my home in Holly Springs to Chapel Hill but just couldn’t figure out a good way. 751 and Farrrington are so narrow with car speeds of 55 so solo rides feel inadvisable.

    I got into a fight on the tobacco trail a few years back. I started an argument with a passerby. Unfortunately, he ended up whooping my ass and leaving me for dead. I work up in the hospital 6 days later with 14 staples in my head... o well, we live and learn.

      Holy Sh$t!!!! Live and learn indeed. Ya can't blame the trail for that one though. Good to know some passersby called for help and got you to the hospital.Hope you're doing well today and still ride the trails.

      I rode this trail something like 5 years ago, and I don’t recall all that riding on city sidewalks through heavily developed areas until the end of the line in Durham. I remember it as being all former railroad right of way. The day we rode (a friend asked me to come ride with her), we had two or three “uncomfortable” encounters with locals who clearly weren’t there to enjoy the trail, in the Durham section! I hope they’ve gotten that under control by now, but having worked in the Bull City for a couple years in the late 80’s, I’m not overly optimistic! It’s a nice trail, but if I ever ride it again, I’d skip the north few miles into Durham. Oh, almost forgot, on another shorter ride a couple years prior to the trip I mentioned, I got hit by a golf ball while riding on the southern part beside a driving range or golf course! The trail was littered with golf balls in that area! That wouldn’t keep me from returning though! Lol

    About how long did this take you to finish? I usually just go from olive chapel to white oak church and turn back 😅 but i feel like i can do the whole trail

    • @RoaminLama
      @RoaminLama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I took me an hour and fifty minutes to go from the southern most trailhead to Durham. The return trip took two hours and ten minutes, (legs getting tired).

      How far would you like to ride? In the video I list all the road crossing that have trailhead parking. And here is a map of the entire trail via TrailLink: www.traillink.com/trail-maps/american-tobacco-trail/

    If it’s not fully paved, it’s not for us.
    Enjoy.

    • @RoaminLama
      @RoaminLama  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is paved for 14 of the 22 miles. (Between New Hope Church Road and the Durham end of the trail). There is trailhead parking at New Hope Church Road as well. And the gravel section south of that, is easily the smoothest gravel I've ever ridden.

      I got lucky the day I rode it. It was a weekday, so traffic was down I’m sure compared to a weekend.

      +Rex Society I don’t live in that area, I made that video when I was down there visiting family. There’s a great app called On X Off-road that will show you all the trails in your area.
