You never realise how you’ve helped a total stranger on the other end of the world. My son’s car had an accident and after the panel repairs a few weeks later we found out the repair shop forgot to attach the rear bench back. Hardly anyone sits at the back cause he’s a teen driver which is why it wasn’t picked by us initially. Was about to send my son back to the repair shop for them to attach it back (I tried initially) but at the last minute I thought I’ll do a random TH-cam search and there you are! I managed to get it back in because you explained the two front latches and the third hinge hook at the back. You didn’t intend to, but you helped save us a trip to the shop! Thank you sincerely.
I thought the title was clickbait, but I'm totally surprised. Both by you that you found this solution and also by Mazda that they made removing the back cushion so easy. Very cool! Thanks for sharing in a quick and precise manner!
I'm 5'8 as well and have slept in a mazda protoge 5 and hyundai elantra gt what I did was lay with my head in one corner and my feet in another. You gain space and I could stretch out all the way
Have you tried lowering the passenger front seat and seeing if that gives you some extra space? Also roughly how long of a space do you have? Trying to figure out how tall is too tall, cheers!
The front seats only fold forward around 5 degrees beyond vertical so it doesn't add much space. The distance from the front of the center console to the back of the trunk area is 6 feet/ 183 cm. The distance from the back of the front seat (with seats moved forward) to the back of the trunk area is 5 feet 10 inches/ 178 cm. I am 5' 10" and I find it more comfortable to sleep with my head in the trunk area and my feet on the center console.
I hope it meets your expectations. Keep in mind that it's bit harder to put back in than to take out because you have to hook the metal loops in the back but it shouldn't be a big deal.
It’s the opposite for me goes in so easy Getting out I can never get that damm hook undone push in on it but mine just has zero slack for use a screw driver as leverage on clip
Those first 2 front hooks were easy to pop. The back one was tougher to unhook. The hook is slightly on the passenger side on my 2018 Mazda3 hatchback. I will have so much more space on a road trip with that back nice and flat.
@@JonWuClimbs Thank you. I'm 5'8". I'm looking at buying one for doing some long-distance car camping. It should be perfect given the good gas mileage as well as low maintenance for the Mazda 3 model.
It is not as easy to put back in. As shown in the video there is a metal loop on the seat cushion that you have to secure on a hook in the car. You can't see the hook when you try to put the seat cushion back in so you have to feel around. Thanks for watching.
@@WendDesaulniers In my case, I just hooked my hand under the front of the set and lifted, and it popped up. Spring loaded clips that grip on to the bracket, but only require some vertical force (I'd say 10 or 20 lbs) to lift vertically and pull the seat out of (unclip). Secure in the horizontal (front-to-back) direction, but *relatively* easy to disengage by pulling up on the front lip of the seat.
I have a ‘14 hatchback. 2 latches in the front are there exactly the same. Currently trying to get the back part to come loose. Not having the best luck..going to keep trying tho
In the video, I use a crash pad for bouldering/rock climbing. The dimensions of the crash pad are 36 inches x 48 inches and then I put my backpack at the end and put my pillow on top of the backpack.
I haven't tried a camper but I have stayed in a camper van which is nice and more comfortable. I have not tried another car. Depending on the situation, I will stay in a tent at a campsite but I think the set up in my car is fine for 1 or 2 nights.
I haven't tried on a car with leather seats but the mechanism seems pretty generic so I would guess that the same mechanism is used in a car with leather seats.
It's not a mattress. It's a crash pad for bouldering/rock climbing. It fits well but is very firm so I wouldn't recommend getting it to use as a mattress. Unfortunately, I haven't tried anything else. Thanks for watching and good luck!
There is a hook in the back so you will need to be able to push the seat cushion down and back before you pull it out. If it won't budge and you can't push it back any further then I don't think you should continue to try to remove the seat cushion because it will be harder to put back if you get it out.
For the 2010 model, you should be able to remove the rear seat cushion the same way except there is no latch to open before pull up on the seat cushion. This video shows what the 2010 model looks like when the seat is removed: th-cam.com/video/YDkU-xzyYPM/w-d-xo.html Good luck!
Sorry, you couldn't get it to work. The newer models may be slightly different. In another comment, it looks like in the 2018 model, there might be one hook in the back that is slightly on the passenger side that is harder to unhook. Also, if it is going to be difficult to unhook the seat cushion in the back then it might be even harder to put the seat back. Good luck.
@@JonWuClimbs hey thanks. Yeah good point. Mine is a 2017 so i was hoping. I might not have the right push and press combo happening hahahahaha. Thanks again
I’m not sure. Maybe there are slight differences in the manufacturing process. I can imagine if your rear seat has more foam and is bulkier then it may be more difficult to unhook. If it is really difficult to remove then it will be more difficult to put back so you may want to consider a different solution. Good luck!
I move my seats all the way forward at the base and then recline all the way back, then take off the headrests and then you have a pillow if you lay the opposite way!
In my car, even if I move my front seats forward all the way, I still can't recline my front seat far enough because the back seat will be in the way. I'm glad that you found a configuration that works for you!
I think the seat cushion comes out easily after the latch is released. It seems like if you don’t use a lot of force on the cushion when you remove or put back the cushion then it should not become more flimsy. At least I haven’t noticed it. Or maybe the dogs don’t complain about it. :-P
Now if I could only get the passenger seat out of the front I would have lots of room for camping, with the high rents it might come to that soon... NO JOKING Mine is a 2013 Mazda 3 sedan doesnt have the latches just looked... must be another way to get out lower seat...
My friends were giving me a hard time about the dog hair in the video. Afterwards, I tried using a high powered vacuum at a car wash but still couldn't really vacuum up the dog hair. I'll try with a lint roller next.

I didn't know this was possible!!! Amazing!!! I'm only 5'8" so if I put the passenger seat forward I can stretch out fully.

Once you push the seat backwards towards the trunk, you need to pull the wire loop up over the hook. I wish I could post a picture of this hook.
