My dad was a diesel machinic
too. He followed pipeline construction in the 1950’s and 60’s. He was the
master machinic for Mc Kensky and Price, there was another one but I don’t
remember the name. I am 69 and I have 8mm movies he took while working
pipeline. Back in the 50’s I guess it was alright to take your kids to work because
he would take me a few times a month. I loved going with him. I see you doing
the work on these engines and I can remember my dad teaching me this stuff. In fact,
sometimes before you say something, I say it before you do. It is amazing how
stuff stays with you. Because of him I worked on my own cars etc. And because I
had my son and daughter hold the old flash light for me, they work on their
cars too. I never worked as a machinic. My dad passed in 1971 and I still miss
him every day. Thank you for doing these videos because for a little while I
hear my dad in your voice. Now when things weren’t going right, he would be
letting out a few curse words. I know you would have to curse because every
thing goes easy for you. Just kidding. If you ever are working around
Wilmington, NC let me know I would like to help you out like some others I see
    working with you. Thanks again.

Those Prius cars are a travesty to the environment. Consider the impact of the mining for the materials for the batteries and then the eventual need for disposal of the hazardous waste. Great videos, I am addicted :)

Let me preface with that I am a heavy equipment mechanic and own a few Detroits, so I'm not afraid to make a few clouds of smoke. But having had to work with emissions as a part of my job and done research, a conventional ICE engined car/vehicle will still put out more emissions over its lifespan than a hybrid or pure electric car. And that's including the mining and processing of the REM for the batteries. A lot of fuel is burnt to create a gallon of gas, so once you include the environmental impact of producing the fuel along with burning it, you're already ahead emissions wise with an electric even with the large open pit "hazmat" mines. At least with the hazmat from the batteries you can easily gather it and store it in a safe location unlike the widespread effect you'd have from exhaust emissions.

The pressure generated by putting the engine under load forces the rings to expand against the cylinder walls. On old style engines like this that is what hones the rings against the bore for a good seal. Otherwise you will glaze the cylinder walls with oil and it will never seal. I rebuild old Brit bike engines same proccedure.. Almost a dry assembly, just a spot of oil on each piston skirt. Start up run for 5 to 10 minutes, set timing and carbs. Let cool retorque head bolts and adjust valves. Fire it up and ride it running up and down the gears gradually adding rpm. Triumph used to take bikes off the assembly line and routinely run them up to 100 mph. The trick is adding load gradually.

This reminds me of working on a Cadillac [1970ish] ambulance with a non working emergency flasher over the rear door. Every time I lost sight of the wire it changed color. Same ambulance drilling a hole in the floor to mount a bracket my boss struck water! The water hoses for the rear heater ran down the driver's side and then crossed over to the passenger side for the heater.

You can get 5 gallons pails deliver to your door for about $50 or less. Well worth the money in my opinion. Good luck with your new engine, it sounds great.

Lots of interesting things can happen with the old Detroit's when you aren't looking, like massive leaks from oil passages not plugged or runaways from stuck racks. We had a 6-71 in an old semi-tractor for a diesel program I was in almost 40 years ago. One class pulled the injectors, ran them on a test stand and put them back while my partner and I worked on the front end changing kingpins. Problem on the test drive--the guys who put the injectors back didn't tighten the lines before putting the valve cover back on so the crankcase got filled with diesel to the point of running out the crank seals. Oil pressure a little low with nice froth! Checklists are your friend!

My old diesel Discovery loved running on new veggie oil, if it got a bit cold I added a splash on unleaded to thin it & stop it clogging filters, but in the cold of winter, without fuel warmers just 50/50 plus a splash of unleaded made it run very well.. sold it with 240.000 MILES on the clock, still running very well, starting at the touch of the starter key.. always.. the French Fries smell for others was a freebie - lol.. Speaking of the products of DD, have you ever run across a "Quad"? 4 6-71s coupled to a common gearbox, put out something like 1000 hp, used in landing craft IIRC and later as power for drilling rigs in the oil patch. And, yes, each engine had its' own clutch. Side story. My brother, who drove boats in the gulf in the oil patch, tells a story ab out when he was bringing the boat [think maritime version of a flat bed] with twin 12-v-149s back from mexico, running on PeMex's very high sulfur fuel. Was stuck for 4 days in the middle of the Gulf, pulling injectors and freeing them up by hitting them with a hammer. Finally got in running on four on one side, and six on the other. THE COLONEL

If you can't find 'em, grind 'em! They say that "loud gear-clashing noises" tended to upset passengers back in the day. Are those air wipers? It would be interesting to hear you talk about the history of your bus and how you came to purchase it. Nobody in our family was ever from Indiana(Illinois actually) but for one year between 1957 and 1958 my parents lived in Plainfield while they were stationed at the Army? depot near there as civil service. They left there and transferred to Huntsville which they were so unimpressed with they nearly turned around and went back to Indiana. They said that winter was the coldest they had ever seen.

Should you need a quick de-greaser, try the oxygen orange from the Dollar Tree.. Bought my last Mercedes (1958 180D, M&M blue) from a fellow in Mexico, IN. Great 43 hp 1.8l, 0-60 in 33 sec.! Engine also used in trailer "refer" units. Reminds me of my duty on D/E Submarines. Thanks. Narragansett Bay

Sounds about right. Run it in for 10 minutes. Check for leaks. Then hammer it.
I remember leaving from Detroit and traveling to Northern Michigan for band camp when I was in junior high the bus driver had that thing hammered the whole way

For an alternative fuel story, look up Jay Leno's Garage/Chrysler Turbo Car......you can burn anything flammable in that engine! Glad to see you took different transportation to Ohio and Lenny didn't have a breakdown on the road! Had me concerned for a day!

10 minutes for the rings and 50 miles for the pistons and liners? Great video as always.
