I watched a video that showed some of the most soothing type videos. Pressure washing was one of them;-) It seems that we like to see the when things get dirty and are cleaned to be bright and shiny and it is very soothing to people. Who would have thunk it? However we were not the ones working our tails off doing the pressure washing. Nice job and I bet you sleep well tonight.

Scott! Had to pause the video and let you know this is pure diesel porn. For me, a proper cleaning after a job well done is pure satisfaction.
Next thing up is building a proper engine bay wiring harness. Get those Frankenstein wires properly secured and routed away from the warm bits, it will make future maintenance so much better.

You know those old Greyhounds of your vintage were know to be able to haul butt. Folklore in day (shortly before I was born in the early 50's and then a while after my birth) was you could burn a common car of the day up trying to follow a Greyhound. I don't know if that was an urban myth or not but in 2022 your beautiful Lady will still haul! I love the sound of it so much brings back memories of those rascals passing us haulin in our 54 Roadmaster which was no slouch itself Thanks Scott you are a heck of a good person and a joy to watch and learn from. @Stimpy&Ren Back in the day my dad hauled cars, their fleet was GMC tractors with 8V71 Detroits with 13 speed RoadRangers about 500,000 was average on the first engine, some went longer some didn't. His truck needed an overhaul at about 600,000 miles. When it came back from the shop it ran less than 5,000 miles before he threw a rod. When he called in and told them his truck blew up, it threw a rod they told him he wasn't qualified to diagnose that and to call a road side assistance number. He was wrong it didn't throw a rod, it threw 2 rods and yes the big hole in the ode of the block was evidence that it wasn't being driven back to the home terminal.

Loved the spring cleaning - only downside is maybe wires and other things might come loose? Watched so many of your videos and was itching to see 50 years of dirt and buildup gone the same way on all those buses too. Love that you are fixing and cleaning your bus up because its your advert for your service - people will look at your bus as an example of your work and if its dirty or dented/damaged..that's not good. Guess too that too much crud must put stress on the engine etc through keeping the heat in...

Regarding the double clutching, I've never driven a non-syncho before, but have always wondered if you time it just right, you should be able to pull it out of gear just as you're unloading the trans. One can do this in modern manual trans car, effectively double clutching it as the main shaft will be up to speed.
Also, you're supposed to steam clean it BEFORE you get in there and disassemble everything.

Rebuild projects like that never (at least for me) happen according to a schedule. Always something getting in your way.
I appreciate the insight you are sharing about the old two-strokes. I've yet to do a resurrection on something with a Detroit 2 cycle, but if I have to, I've got a better idea on what to look for and expect. Especially on preventing run-away's. I witnessed one where setting the injectors went wrong, I thought I was going to see a launch to the moon before the man pulled the panic lever on it.
One "old head" told me that those engines are capable of running backwards ... if they, for example, get stalled on a hill and the truck rolls backwards before getting the clutch disengaged. Not very well, but could cause damage if it does for too long, and difficult to shut down. Maybe someone with more insight on them can verify that possibility, as I've never seen it, or had anyone else mention it to me.
The only instruction I've gotten for driving one was given to me by a guy that drove during the '70s. "First thing you do after you get in the cab is to slam the door on your own hand, and make yourself mad as he!!. Now you are ready to drive a Detroit! ... "

Really like your videos I see sometimes when your jacking up buses that your jack is not supported well for the conditions. Why don't you go to a metal shop and have them sher you some steel plates oh maybe about 12" X 12" X 1/2" and have them weld on some rebar handles so they would be easier to handle. Even if the ground was soft or sandy it would spread out the weight better so you wouldn't have to work so hard and it might make it a little safer to. Keep safe and keep the video coming.

Funny with the 6-71, you really don't need an accelerator pedal. If you had a three position toggle with- idle, 1/2 power, full power-you'd be set. I know with transit buses, it's either floor it or nothing.
On my transit bus motorhome now with 8V-71TATAAC, I rarely floor it. I usually just push down an inch on the accelerator for easy acceleration from the stop. With the Allison V730, it shifts at around 1,600 and comes down to 1,100 on partial throttle.

Having shifted crash boxes on the floor I was curious to see if the extra shift linkage involved with getting it up to the column would affect shifting speed. It seems to slow the timing considerably. Great job on the rebuild. You must be pleased. Look forward to all your videos.

I really like your videos for a variety of reasons and your tender nature has not been seen before. I will continue following and drinking some bourbon while i watch as I am 76 yrs. old I am surprised you are that touchy. Please forgive my offending you.

I like a grimy engine. It keeps everything lubricated and rust proofed. Except for an oil pan coated in grime, it makes little or no difference in the running temperature of a liquid cooled engine. An oozing Detroit was actually a blessing in a marine environment.

You must feel confident, won’t take a pressure wash to anything, it’s it’s leaking but if it’s dry I leave it. Brave on such an old motor. Mind you if it’s yours who cares lol
