I was glad to see the old IHC Superior Body school bus in your video. I knew it was at least 72 or older as that was the style of the rear windows from that vintage. I really loved those old IHC busses. Most of the ones I worked on were 345's, and not 392's. They were really good motors, and tough as nails. I got so good at doing clutches on them, I could change a clutch, throw-out, flywheel, and pilot bearing in 1 hour and 45 min from pushing it into the shop to driving it out! We had a lot of beginner drivers, and those 345's would really hold up. Dirt poor wages back then, but it sure was fun! Steve Carlson I agree with the others, I never use a gps, only a paper map.
The international bus brought back memories of my uncle's international truck. His was also a 68 with a dump bed and his had a 345 v8 gas with a 5 speed and a 2 speed rear end. I remember riding with him at summer when we go visit family. I live in Michigan the upper peninsula and my uncle was in Maine. I always wanted to play in it when I was young. He would let me play in it making believe I was driving it. Lost my uncle a few years ago.

Ok to clarify my gps works great, it’s a garmin. I missed the turn, it’s a woman’s voice I tuned her out. It comes naturally i guess. Turns out my wife does not use apple maps, she uses google maps on her phone so it was google that sent us into the restricted nuclear site for a short cut.
The older ac condensers achieved a tonnage boost by spraying water over condenser coils . Maybe have a mist sprayer in front of radiator or a cowl to catch and direct air into radiator achieving higher air flow at higher speeds .
Mister on the radiator use a solenoid to turn it on did that on my old gm astro caboverworks great Always have a paper map as a backup truck atlas works best i have the old man version large print and maps laminated so when i spill coffee on it it doesn't hurt it Have a good day THE GRUMPY BUS

I used a GPS to run up the coast upto Washington,got so friggen tired of driving in circles, pulled into a Walmart and bought a rand McNally....idk I guess for some GPS is the way to go, as for myself .meh!!!🤔🤪
I use the GPS to get me to the general area. I then switch to the analog (ie paper, usually and Rand-McNally), especially as I went to school East of the Craters of the Moon area. Narragansett Bay
watch your show all the time. im not even into bus stuff but i love taking things apart/fixing things and find it really interesting. i build hot rods and restore old cars as a hobbie and use to be an auto tech. look into amazon for your fans for cooling they have really high cfm fans for pretty cheap and they work really well. bought a 3000cfm fan for my old duster havent had a problem from it for year. i use to get them from summit racing but was expensive have on from summit in my gremlin. 2500cfm from summit works just the same if not worse then the ones i got from amazon for 3/4 less the price. i would say if amazon says 3000 cfm its the same as a 2500cfm from summit racing. but definitely look into them for your bus you can even install a dial switch to control the speed of the fan if you dont need it to go that fast all the time. i have a dimmer switch for a light on my old camper van for an exhaust fan for the back cab to keep it cool the switch goes from 2v to 12v. i even have one 10in hung up as a fan for the cabin wired up the same way works way better then a reguler fan. those high cfm radiator fans are the best and really cheap on amazon
Git A Rand-McNally Deluxe Motor Carriers’ Road Atlas!! Yep, what the bedbug haulers use to find houses. You can buy the cheaper ones but they won't hold up to rough handling over time. No charger needed but you might need a map light. ☺ The fuel savings alone will pay for one. Never mind saving a great deal of aggravation.
The only thing worse than Apple Maps is the old BMW Mk II Navigation, which we had in our 740iL...she once tried to put us in the ocean, when we were in Atlantic City, NJ. If you need a place to stop and turn a wrench on Lenny, you guys are welcome to stop on by, we’re in Nampa.
Salt Lake City is at about 4200' elevation, and their city bus lines service some ski resorts at 8500' elevation. In the 80's I know they equipped those units with electric retarders. I wouldn't be surprised if the engine specs were not your average flatlander setup.
Electric fans.. mixed bag.. yea can help.. but not usually on the highway.. they tend to block air more than move it at over 40 mph, not sure how the math works out on a sideways mounted radiator works out though.... maybe you will find a ton of playa dust in the radiator..(not unusual, was a mechanic in AZ for decades) Some kind of baffle, scoop or diverter for incoming air might work a lot better.
Welcome to Idaho, the Snake River Plain is kinda naked. The air is thinner up here at this altitude so it's normal for old Driptroit's to run a little hotter & you'll see more smoke for the same reason. Good air flow through the core is a must & as i'm sure you know, lugging a Drippy is undesirable so the OTR fix is to down-shift & get the engine up on the governor. That unloads the engine & turns more fan speed.
My last GPS boof was going north of Winnemucca, NV trying to take a short cut to Grants Pass, OR. I didn't realize that Google Maps quits working when you lose your internet connection and just kept going north instead of turning west to go through Lake Point. By the time we got our bearings, courtesy of an innkeeper at a tiny town, we had to keep going north to Burns, OR., then head west and south west to get to Medford, and from there to Grants Pass. It added 6 hours to a 13 hour trip. I learned about downloading the map data *before* leaving instead of relying on data to keep feeding it. Your oil leak is just your engine's way of telling you that it wants to be a genuine Detroit!
Gps still leaves a lot to be desired. Every year we’re pulling sombody out that folloes their gos down the seasonal road that becomes first a quagmire (in mid November) then becomes one of the main snowmobile corridor trails (dec-march). Had they simply followed the signs and ignored the gps they’d be fine.
Apples GPS has been a problem from day one when they would route people into lakes (drivers were smart enough not to go that far). I thought they had fixed it! Google Maps is pretty good, but dedicated GPS like Tom-Tom and Garmin tend to be more accurate as long as you keep them updated. A 1% grade is 1 foot for every 100 feet. A 6% is 6 ft for every 100 feet, and hold onto your britches if its downhill!
I run two separate GPS units in my motorcoach but I still study and keep a road atlas with me at all times. The big Randy McNalley ones with the laminated pages will last a lifetime. The exhaust pipe routed out the top of that bus looked out of place. I also drove an old international bus like that one when I was a lad. Same engine and everything.

It seems like you had it all dialed in after the in frame rebuild. Hopefully you can get all of the bug's worked out before the winter months set in. I've been in to that place once before, it's really trippy. And yes, it's no joke about all of the no trespassing signs around that area.
As far as the bus getting hot, it could be from the top tub fins being rotted out. That is a lot area in prospective to the core not cooling and can effect the performance of the system, especially cooling from the side.
And in regards to that curtain rod, Amazon has them, but you really need to go searching for them. Try a company called "Sail Right" they have all of that stuff on line and they also offer a print catalog.
I had a 1950 ford F2 with a 1938 flat head V8 that would overheat , I used a hudson sprayer with a longer hose to spay the radiator a little bit at a time to keep the temp down worked great untill I ran out of water in traffic.
GPS can get you into some dangerous situations.. We were in the alps in france and my Dad borrowed my brothers Renault 21 turbo to go to an astronomy meeting up a mountain.. The problem was it took him up a road in the dark that turned into unpaved with big rocks.. It had know where to turn round got so steep the front wheels were slipping. He had to abandon the car and walk 1/4 of a mile up the hill to the meeting then the locals had to help push him up the track..He ripped the exhaust off, put a hole in the aluminum sump, bent the rear brake limiter, ripped the front splitter off ,shredded 1 tire, dented the underneath.
Considering the increased power your getting from the old girl don't you think an electric fan mounted on the outside of the radiator so if she runs a little hot you would be able to increase the cooling by throwing a switch or simply wire it up to an automatic thermostat control to run the add on radiator fan. Too much cooling is not a bad thing.
That Fishbowl has a homemade Environmental Exhaust Package. BTW, if your GPS fails again and takes you to Area 51, play _Holiday Road_ on your Bluetooth (if you have one).
regarding GPS, always double check your route, Streets and trips once had me cutting across the White House grounds, even told me I'd have to access 2 gates, glad I didn't listen to it.... look at your radiator, are the inlet and outlet on the same side? if so, you're not getting the cross flow thru the rad at higher speeds, you might need to have a rad shop change that... as always, be safe, Tim and Cat
Years ago there was a product called "KOOLIT". It was a wetting agent and weakened the surface tension of the coolant. You would lose an easy 5-10 deg. You might want to try it. Another trick, if you have room. Not knowing what kind of air shroud you have, spacing the fan closer to the rad core will get good results. Good luck.
Glad the troops didn't take Lenny & you guys out - I'm sure they realized that "enemies of the state" are not traveling around in a repurposed Greyhound bus. I myself have never used GPS - I rely on my sense of direction & road maps/atlases. I hope the additional fans will help w/the cooling issue.

A whole different feel when it is your bus that is on the side of the road with problems, eh. And, once the density altitude goes above 3000 or 4000 feet any shortcomings in cooling will become an issue. A turbocharger will multiply that.

I find out west I have more issues with weird GPS routes. My wife and I have taken to using two different apps and if they don't compare we start investigating.. However I do love the GPS and the ability to Google Earth places ahead of my arrival and see if I can (for example) get in and out of the gas pumps. Probably less of a problem with a diesel for you guys, but with 35' gas rv plus 14' toad, its an issue for us.
Nothing will replace a good Paper map or atlas. Every GPS Navigation system I've ever used has sucked in one way or another. I hear alot of people say "itsgreat, it got me there" , not realizing they drove WAY out of their way or took a very dificult way. IMHO its always better to trace it out on a good paper map. Map apps are wrong SO much of the time....
5 feet in 100 constitutes as a 5% grade. Truckers are laughing at you for trusting a GPS as opposed to pretriping the route to know where you should have made your turns
I use Garmin gps. The worst it's done to me is getting the address wrong by a hundred feet or so. My gps I use is designed for trucks and rv and automobiles. It has a 7 inch screen plus you can input the length, height and weight of your rv or truck. Food for thought. Mine was designed by Garmin for truckers, RV's or automobiles.
Scott, you have mentioned a few times that the speed creeps up on you (know the feeling), and so does the temp. And you seem happy with the power in the mountains at altitude. Have you rethought putting on a turbo? I guess is hearing the whistle worth taking up space and making more heat? Or possibly getting a ticket? ;>) But "cool" does sometimes outweigh practical.
Hi Scott. Joe here I think you’re exhaust system has more to do with your heating problems because the heat can’t get out at 2600 RPM. The engine will pull the load now but it cannot get rid of the heat
Yes for sure it’s coming off. But if i really gotta get it home to do that. But I’ll be making it much larger and more open for both in and out like we discussed. My wife would not be happy with me if i just straight pipped it for the next 2000 miles home. I worked hard to keep it at 70. It will do more. We were getting 70-71 at 2415 noload on the way out here but not at altitude. It was more 68-69. I’m 5000-6000 ft out here right now. I don’t know what it’s turning now but on the flat i let off at 74 and said well joe got me a passing gear. ;) i just don’t want to use it. It never liked the mid to upper 90’s outside air temps. 70 deg day i can do just about anything and keep it at 180. Lower to mid 80’s it’s 185. After that it’s time to watch it very close.
When you add a turbo charger monitoring cylinder heat temperature and manifold pressure is going to really be critically important. Is there room to add an auxiliary radiator?

Very cool drive. Once upon a time when my parents live in Filer Idaho, Just outside Twin Falls, we would take that way as a short cut from Idaho Falls to Twin Falls, this sure takes me back. I live in Calgary Alberta Canada by the way.

Running over a curb? It happens even in cars and trucks a lot smaller than your bus. Missing a GPS turn? It happens. Ending up at a government installation to guys with weapons, is one of those things, been there done that. You're on an adventure run so enjoy the adventure. I enjoy riding along.
Every so often I think my GPS is just screwing with me, kinda like a friend might do for fun. Recently I had the car's GPS and the phone's completely disagree about how far a destination is, one was 60 miles and the other 110 miles.....kinda like having two watches, you never know what time it is.
Have you thought about assessing the airflow across your radiators? A louver to direct air across the radiator at speed and a electric fan that kicks on at 190 will do it. Also make your exhaust as free flowing as possible to get the exhaust heat away. Those two tail pipes look a little small. I still jot down my route on paper, along with google. Take Care.
I don't know if your temperature gauge has a programmable set point for an over-temp warning light. Perhaps you should consider adding an additional sensor and a red light to get your attention when the temperature exceeds a certain value.

Having a paper map is a must in my opinion, I guess you can say it's a GPS's spare tire.
paper maps are like the traveling board game for adults much better with red string and push pins if you have the space and a co pilot tracker.

Scott, try adding a shroud to your radiator before going to pusher fans. Usually makes a huge difference.

Wal-Mart has road atlas. The larger one is very detailed.

Maybe add an audible alarm that would trigger at 195 degrees so you will hear an alarm before running too hot?
Personally I believe there is a prankster in GPS that really likes to send us down the wrong road just for the pure fun of it.
It seems like you had it all dialed in after the in frame rebuild. Hopefully you can get all of the bug's worked out before the winter months set in.

As far as the bus getting hot, it could be from the top tub fins being rotted out. That is a lot area in prospective to the core not cooling and can effect the performance of the system, especially cooling from the side.
The exhaust on that bus looks a little Mad Max, I like it.
And in regards to that curtain rod, Amazon has them, but you really need to go searching for them.
Try a company called "Sail Right" they have all of that stuff on line and they also offer a print catalog.
I had a 1950 ford F2 with a 1938 flat head V8 that would overheat , I used a hudson sprayer with a longer hose to spay the radiator a little bit at a time to keep the temp down worked great untill I ran out of water in traffic.
GPS can get you into some dangerous situations.. We were in the alps in france and my Dad borrowed my brothers Renault 21 turbo to go to an astronomy meeting up a mountain.. The problem was it took him up a road in the dark that turned into unpaved with big rocks.. It had know where to turn round got so steep the front wheels were slipping. He had to abandon the car and walk 1/4 of a mile up the hill to the meeting then the locals had to help push him up the track..He ripped the exhaust off, put a hole in the aluminum sump, bent the rear brake limiter, ripped the front splitter off ,shredded 1 tire, dented the underneath.
I use an up to date Garman for a GPS, it never lets me down and it also shows the posted speed limit.
I love my Garmin, albeit it’s not perfect but far better than my Google Map app
Considering the increased power your getting from the old girl don't you think an electric fan mounted on the outside of the radiator so if she runs a little hot you would be able to increase the cooling by throwing a switch or simply wire it up to an automatic thermostat control to run the add on radiator fan.
Too much cooling is not a bad thing.

That Fishbowl has a homemade Environmental Exhaust Package. BTW, if your GPS fails again and takes you to Area 51, play _Holiday Road_ on your Bluetooth (if you have one).
regarding GPS, always double check your route, Streets and trips once had me cutting across the White House grounds, even told me I'd have to access 2 gates, glad I didn't listen to it.... look at your radiator, are the inlet and outlet on the same side? if so, you're not getting the cross flow thru the rad at higher speeds, you might need to have a rad shop change that... as always, be safe, Tim and Cat

Years ago there was a product called "KOOLIT". It was a wetting agent and weakened the surface tension of the coolant. You would lose an easy 5-10 deg. You might want to try it. Another trick, if you have room. Not knowing what kind of air shroud you have, spacing the fan closer to the rad core will get good results. Good luck.

Glad the troops didn't take Lenny & you guys out - I'm sure they realized that "enemies of the state" are not traveling around in a repurposed Greyhound bus. I myself have never used GPS - I rely on my sense of direction & road maps/atlases. I hope the additional fans will help w/the cooling issue.

A whole different feel when it is your bus that is on the side of the road with problems, eh. And, once the density altitude goes above 3000 or 4000 feet any shortcomings in cooling will become an issue. A turbocharger will multiply that.

Once was routed 200 miles one way out of my way by bad GPS routes. 400 miles total.
I find out west I have more issues with weird GPS routes. My wife and I have taken to using two different apps and if they don't compare we start investigating.. However I do love the GPS and the ability to Google Earth places ahead of my arrival and see if I can (for example) get in and out of the gas pumps. Probably less of a problem with a diesel for you guys, but with 35' gas rv plus 14' toad, its an issue for us.
Nothing will replace a good Paper map or atlas. Every GPS Navigation system I've ever used has sucked in one way or another. I hear alot of people say "itsgreat, it got me there" , not realizing they drove WAY out of their way or took a very dificult way. IMHO its always better to trace it out on a good paper map. Map apps are wrong SO much of the time....

Truckers are laughing at you for trusting a GPS as opposed to pretriping the route to know where you should have made your turns
If you add electric fans be sure that you have enough power to run AMP wise. They draw a lot of power.
I use Garmin gps. The worst it's done to me is getting the address wrong by a hundred feet or so. My gps I use is designed for trucks and rv and automobiles. It has a 7 inch screen plus you can input the length, height and weight of your rv or truck. Food for thought.
Mine was designed by Garmin for truckers, RV's or automobiles.
Scott, you have mentioned a few times that the speed creeps up on you (know the feeling), and so does the temp. And you seem happy with the power in the mountains at altitude. Have you rethought putting on a turbo? I guess is hearing the whistle worth taking up space and making more heat? Or possibly getting a ticket? ;>) But "cool" does sometimes outweigh practical.

Hi Scott. Joe here I think you’re exhaust system has more to do with your heating problems because the heat can’t get out at 2600 RPM. The engine will pull the load now but it cannot get rid of the heat
Yes for sure it’s coming off. But if i really gotta get it home to do that. But I’ll be making it much larger and more open for both in and out like we discussed. My wife would not be happy with me if i just straight pipped it for the next 2000 miles home. I worked hard to keep it at 70. It will do more. We were getting 70-71 at 2415 noload on the way out here but not at altitude. It was more 68-69. I’m 5000-6000 ft out here right now. I don’t know what it’s turning now but on the flat i let off at 74 and said well joe got me a passing gear. ;) i just don’t want to use it. It never liked the mid to upper 90’s outside air temps. 70 deg day i can do just about anything and keep it at 180. Lower to mid 80’s it’s 185. After that it’s time to watch it very close.

When you add a turbo charger monitoring cylinder heat temperature and manifold pressure is going to really be critically important. Is there room to add an auxiliary radiator?

Very cool drive. Once upon a time when my parents live in Filer Idaho, Just outside Twin Falls, we would take that way as a short cut from Idaho Falls to Twin Falls, this sure takes me back. I live in Calgary Alberta Canada by the way.

Running over a curb? It happens even in cars and trucks a lot smaller than your bus. Missing a GPS turn? It happens. Ending up at a government installation to guys with weapons, is one of those things, been there done that. You're on an adventure run so enjoy the adventure. I enjoy riding along.

Every so often I think my GPS is just screwing with me, kinda like a friend might do for fun. Recently I had the car's GPS and the phone's completely disagree about how far a destination is, one was 60 miles and the other 110 miles.....kinda like having two watches, you never know what time it is.

Edit: At 18:05 in this video you can see a skirt under the bus that may help to create negative pressure under the back of the bus, promoting airflow through the radiators and out the underside of the bus.
DeLorme Gazeteer Maps are a great tool to have along with your GPS
DeLorme world HQ is in Yarmouth ME. Gazetteer is the best detail map out there.
A louver to direct air across the radiator at speed and a electric fan that kicks on at 190 will do it. Also make your exhaust as free flowing as possible to get the exhaust heat away. Those two tail pipes look a little small. I still jot down my route on paper, along with google. Take Care.
I don't know if your temperature gauge has a programmable set point for an over-temp warning light. Perhaps you should consider adding an additional sensor and a red light to get your attention when the temperature exceeds a certain value.
Yeahhh.... like the "a little hot" light on AIRPLANE!
