Definitely. Me and my step son made all the guild decks (our own versions) and we play with them at local standard tournaments and they usually win 2 or 3 rounds out of 4. The people we lose against are either mono red or a three colored deck with the best of all three colors in them. We go into the tournaments not expecting to win all 4 unless we get very lucky and we're okay with that because we would rather have a variety of decks and cards instead of a couple 3 colored decks with the same 9 cards x4. We embraced the guilds. We can play the typical mono colored decks in future sets. These sets are all about dual colored decks. The mono red seems is a boring repetitive ritual of spells and Phoenixes, and the blue is strong but gets old imo. Why play that when you can play guilds? Because people are unfulfilled and have the need to play boring net decks to win and try filling that void. Magic was at it's peak when everybody and their dads weren't net decking and there were no 7/6 trample creatures with hexproof that also can't be countered. The tournaments were way more fun
@@7ItalianStallion What you say makes sense. However, if I pay to enter a tournament, I play to win and play my spin on top tier decks in the hopes of getting my money's worth. I already pay for the cards, and entry fees on top of that would want a return. I play mostly casual though, and that is where I prefer to play because that is where I can play stuff like this, and it is the best way to play.
Ok you won me over Dev, this is sick but I'm going for this slightly improved (?) and slightly more expensive (but still 20 bucks) decklist including red. Win conditions are Wall of lost thoughts, Viashino pyromancer and Dagger Caster, so we can win on our turn or next draw step, thereby winning a race or beating sweepers. We also have 4 extra clones with Protean Raider, as well as keeping Mirror Image. thats 24 creatures, our 12 spells are opt, spell pierce and negate to keep our wincons alive, and to be fair they wont even be targets until its too late. I'm bloody doing it boys!

I GOT A SHOUTOUT?!?!?!?!? I've been playing Jeskai Battlement for about a week, running Viashino Pyromancer, Protean Raider, a couple Mirror March, and a couple expansion/explosion. I also have Ixalan's Binding, Treasure Map and Ajani's Welcome in my mainboard, and I assume those would be on this list were this not a budget deck. Mirror March just helps the kills happen faster when you're on Arena, and occasionally serves as a wincon of it's own. Dev, thanks for the mention, my best freind and I lost our shit. ((P.S. Dev, I've had Boros Control in the mail for a while, and I want to send my Jeskai Battlement deck to you but I also want my take on Land Destruction to be pruned/ I need sideboard tips))
Might I highly recommend Incubation//Incongruity for this deck. Even without the green mana to cast the Incongruity half of the card, Incubation digs very deep for those combo pieces at only one mana.
Hmm, but it can also fizzle, idk if deck plays enough creatures. At least Opt and Shimmer guarantee that you draw something. And idk how expensive is incubation at the moment.
With nothing in the double pip zone I'd also recommend 4x Zhalfirin Void. Though I'm sure many of the limitations of the deck are around it being as budget as possible.
Hi Dev!! I've played this deck in my local store yesterday. Ended up 2-2 with 2 games setting infinite mill combo. I have used the Jeskai version of it, playing Viashino Pyromancer on sideboard (infinite damage) to beat Nexus that can't be put in the graveyard. The deck is very funny to play with it and I like the idea of using creatures with "gain X life" in sideboard. I lost a match from monored on turn 4 because I didn't have any gain of life except for 2 copies of Revitalize main deck. Thanks for show it!

ChibiRuah You can use the scry 2 infinite effect to manually set your deck order, though explaining the process to a judge would take a minute or two, and they still might not let you just organize your deck. But it is possible.
@@champs1127 Why won't they let you? If the process is not interrupted, you can guarantee it happening with 100% probability (unless there are cards that somehow interact with scry from the library). So yeah, you can say "I scry until that happens", and you skill all the way there. Though pulling off this combo would be really hard.
It's a non-deterministic effect, I think. There's a certain order of cards in library, meaning that they're going to have a certain order that you see in your library. Just the act of asking a judge permission to "stack" your deck feels wrong, too.
@@das_gruuben No, it isn't. If it was Scry 1, then indeed, the order would be the same. But with scry 2, you can make an algorithm that will order all the cards however you want using finite amount of steps. Basically, you want to keep one card on top, until you get the card that has to follow it, then scry both to the bottom. This will slowly build chunks of cards that follow the order you want, and those chunks will slowly be glued together and grow, until your while deck turns into one big specifically ordered chunk. So yeah, you can reorganize your deck in any way you wish this way.
Darn. I tried to build this with Green in it for Incubation // Incongruity, Silhana Wayfinder, Adventurous Impulse, Nature’s Spiral, and was experimenting with Repulse // Replicate, Regenisis, and A Vivien Reid.

Infinite thopters, say go Opponent : plays chainwhirler. Lol I would make this deck esper so I can play vampire that drains for 1 on etb and win on the spot
The problem with 3 color is that the manabase would get really bad without check/shocklands, but I 100% agree. And while at it just add Hostage Taker too, which works better than chupacabra since it can act as a replacement for 1 Battlement in the combo or as a straight up "removal". And the vamp is great to win on the spot but the best curve would probably still require our win con on T2, so the wall is really our best bet. You could argue to replace Opts with Barrier of Bones and Shimmers for Incubation, but the combo will always be clunky because Battlements is a 5 drop.
If that is the only reason for adding black, I would add red instead. Red adds another clone effect (Protean Raider) as Dev mentioned. It also gives you Viashino Pyromancer for ETB burn to replace the Aviation Pioneers.
@@jasonmolisani1864 valid argument, but the pirate requires you to attack to copy, so it might not be very reliable if you only have a wall or if your opponent have blockers... In that case it might be better to simply ditch the combo and go for UR wizards aggro

Plus the main thing, the lols when they think theyre against red aggro when you're an infinite combo deck is worth it by itself

You get: -Hostage taker (you only need 1 battlement, 1 mirror image, and 1 taker for the combo thus the potential for turn 5 win infinite mill) -Conive///Concoct to get any creature back from grave plus a decent dig -Skymarch bloodletter as a replacement for three thopter gal which can get in early damage if need be -Much better removal (contempt, mortify, consume) -Card draw in the form of vampire visionary (can't remember the name off hand) - ravenous chupacabra for obvious reasons -And if you REALLY want a 1 drop creature...barrier of bones. Fix your draws stave off damage I guess this doesn't make it budget anymore but man you can turn 5 win with this if you get the best draw (i did it at my lgs last friday lol) Anyway thank you for reading this and the deck tech
I never realized 3 of them combo off. That is pretty interesting. If i wanted to increase the powerlevel of the deck a bit what should i prioritize other than the manabase? I mean what non-budget cards that would be on theme should i use? How about adding black for better removal and generally more options?
I've tried a version of this deck, with the vampire that gives you 4 life ETB and Sailor of Means in place of Riverwise Augur (simply because I don't have enough Augurs), but with the sailors it can power up my hilarious Mass Manipulations for just pure funsies. I think I also tossed in some copies of that 3 mana 1/1 flying do-hickey that draws you a card ETB, and that is pretty hilarious too. So many ways to win, and with my walls, sailors, and such I have had decent game against aggro for defense, and those vampires are key there. In fact I might go for a full set of those and cut the whirly thingie. Just for the memes :D
I love Battlement! I built a couple different, non-budget version of the deck including orzhov, jeskai, and abzan. Jeskai is the most resilient using viashinos, naban, and exclusion mages. Abzan is the most fun though. More of a toolbox deck than anything where it runs knights of autumn, chupacabras, plague crafter, findbroker, and the discard rat. Lol
No Esper? Some extra bucks for Hostage Taker and it goes T3 Mirror Image (copy the wall) T4 Hostage take the image T5 Lumbering Battlements GG. (LB exiles HT, freeing MI that copies LB, then freeing HT that takes MI and loop).
What about Viashino Pyromancer? The Thopter win con can easily be negated with cleansing nova, Ritual of Soot, Gates Ablaze, or Cry of Carnarium on their next turn. With Pyromancer, you can win on your turn and not worry about that.

How about Justiciar's portal and the other one card that can bounce your creature? This way you can actually bounce your combo pieces in case if some removal or board wipe threatens your creatures, and you also simply capitalise on ETB triggers when you don't need to.
Hey Dev - what are some other things we could do with different colors and Lumbering? I'd love to make an "Impact" with Lumbering Battlement. Haha... sad Boros joke.
Think this deck could do with 2x evolving wilds (or maybe just one), seeing you wil run into the 'put another battlement on the bottom' every so often, and being able to shuffle your deck may well be what the doctor ordered.
I feel like I'm doing something wrong, I can't get this infinite combo to work. I keep stuffing up the order maybe. And they lose their previous +2/+2 each time they're taken out right? So without another creature with an on enter trigger it just does nothing. Right?
If a Mirror image leaves the battlefield as a copy of a creature, does it just become destroyed (because it's a token)? Or does it just revert to the "mirror image" state?
Not really. The core combo of the deck is not very competitive (comparing to Nexus/Temur big mana decks) and adding red doesn't really improve anything imo. You get red removal package but that alone these days doesn't really do you much.
@@Fly-ik6kg The pirate? It requires raid and I don't think you can attack in most games. The etb attached to red creatures are fine although going 3 color is not budget anymore and I don't think it's worth it for an entertainment deck.

Then again I am not sure if more replicate effects is what you need, you might just want some card selection because there is no replacement for lumbering battlement. For playing in Arena, as long as you are not playing ranked you will always find OP with other kinds of janky decks so no worries.
In combo decks, you always want the deeper dig. We’re not exactly a control deck that wants to hold up mana early, so instant speed doesn’t actually matter much to us
I'm not sure, but I guess the lumbering battlement is supposed to repeatedly keep blinking your other creatures, which trigger various enter the battlefield effects... And lumbering battlements can blink each other too
@@AdamSingle you essentially need to be able to have 3 Lumbering B. out on the battlefield at the same time. And also one of the 2 combo pieces, one which will mil your opponent and the other making infinite thopters. Dev explains the combo better than me. GL with pulling the combo off
Thanks, I think i get it. 3 lumbering on their own are nothing, the idea is to mill on enter effects of other creatures. I just keep stuffing it somehow. I've switched it up to add black as well and it works well. I have some chupacabra and some vamps that deal damage on enter. So if I can get the combo right I should be good. I have had no trouble getting the creatures out, I just keep stuffing the play order. Mirror image definitely makes it tough to follow on mtg arena. Easy to confuse yourself.
When I started making the deck, I was on 4 Portal and 4 Siren’s Ruse. Turns out you don’t need them for any reason other than switching direction mid-combo, and that doesn’t come up often enough to dedicate slots to them
@@SBMTG they can be used to protect important pieces from removal/board wipes. But I guess they still don't protect the pieces that fall out from battlement. Instead I would suggest using Assurance or Unbreakable formation, since those pieces will protect your board vs most threats. Though black is still terrifying, that's why I think Justiciar's still better.
Please do not spoil the winner of mythic tours, without a spoilert alert! I really like your deck techs. But cant see them until Ive seen the mythic tour matches....
Dev it would be nice if you do ultra budget decks that you include what would be a non budget version of this deck. Similar to what Saffron Olive does. It would help with these super spicy builds.

River's Rebuke is also another wipe card that can be used in blue decks.

Think this deck could do with 2x evolving wilds (or maybe just one), seeing you wil run into the 'put another battlement on the bottom' every so often, and being able to shuffle your deck may well be what the doctor ordered.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong, I can't get this infinite combo to work. I keep stuffing up the order maybe. And they lose their previous +2/+2 each time they're taken out right? So without another creature with an on enter trigger it just does nothing. Right?

If a Mirror image leaves the battlefield as a copy of a creature, does it just become destroyed (because it's a token)? Or does it just revert to the "mirror image" state?

Doesn't Conclave Tribunal work just as well once you have the first two Lumbering Battlements?
Tribunal cannot ride the battlement itself and won't repeatedly enter the battlefield. Deputy of Detention works though

Not really. The core combo of the deck is not very competitive (comparing to Nexus/Temur big mana decks) and adding red doesn't really improve anything imo. You get red removal package but that alone these days doesn't really do you much.
@@ArmoredNeko you need Red for another for copies Effect on a creature and then you add the Wizard that Deals dmg as a win con and erhält blocker
@@Fly-ik6kg The pirate? It requires raid and I don't think you can attack in most games. The etb attached to red creatures are fine although going 3 color is not budget anymore and I don't think it's worth it for an entertainment deck.
@@ArmoredNeko if i win, i dont mind throwing a creature away for the raid trigger. Just to be clear i dont want to be a Tier 1 deck oder even Tier 2, i just want to win some Games in BO1 on Arena and have fun with it.
@@Fly-ik6kg Fair, I guess you can. Then again I am not sure if more replicate effects is what you need, you might just want some card selection because there is no replacement for lumbering battlement. For playing in Arena, as long as you are not playing ranked you will always find OP with other kinds of janky decks so no worries.

Why not Viashino Pyromancer? Is he too expensive? 2 Damage seems more reliable than thopters or mill
blue for mirror entity, other wise known as 5-8 battlements, 3 color is hard on a budget
Would anticipate be better for the dig? Instant speed 3 is pretty strong vs sorcery 4 card?
In combo decks, you always want the deeper dig. We’re not exactly a control deck that wants to hold up mana early, so instant speed doesn’t actually matter much to us

I'm not sure, but I guess the lumbering battlement is supposed to repeatedly keep blinking your other creatures, which trigger various enter the battlefield effects... And lumbering battlements can blink each other too
(blink = taking a card away from battlefield and soon return it back)

@@AdamSingle you essentially need to be able to have 3 Lumbering B. out on the battlefield at the same time. And also one of the 2 combo pieces, one which will mil your opponent and the other making infinite thopters. Dev explains the combo better than me. GL with pulling the combo off
Thanks, I think i get it. 3 lumbering on their own are nothing, the idea is to mill on enter effects of other creatures. I just keep stuffing it somehow. I've switched it up to add black as well and it works well. I have some chupacabra and some vamps that deal damage on enter. So if I can get the combo right I should be good. I have had no trouble getting the creatures out, I just keep stuffing the play order. Mirror image definitely makes it tough to follow on mtg arena. Easy to confuse yourself.

It’s near impossible to get 3 lumber without remove or counter. Glad I only used 5 uncommon wild cards.

When I started making the deck, I was on 4 Portal and 4 Siren’s Ruse. Turns out you don’t need them for any reason other than switching direction mid-combo, and that doesn’t come up often enough to dedicate slots to them
@@SBMTG they can be used to protect important pieces from removal/board wipes. But I guess they still don't protect the pieces that fall out from battlement. Instead I would suggest using Assurance or Unbreakable formation, since those pieces will protect your board vs most threats.
Though black is still terrifying, that's why I think Justiciar's still better.

Dev it would be nice if you do ultra budget decks that you include what would be a non budget version of this deck. Similar to what Saffron Olive does. It would help with these super spicy builds.
