For people who don’t know why he’s burning the wood it’s a Japanese method called sushugiban to harden wood and colour it black aswell
Because people can’t figure out what’s happening

Native american burned their canoes out too as did most river based civilizations to make it hard and watertight.
It also prevents rotting

This is often a better solution than paint for ensuring the quality of the wood
Paint is generally not a good option for wood, no matter the quality. Always use wood stain.
