Ok I work with wood every day for a living, and I had no idea you could make a bowl like that. I had assumed you had to start with a block larger than the bowl you wanted and carve it down. Blew my mind when he turned a few rough boards into a bowl. Absolutely beautiful.
Also that they create such amazing pieces with no PPE, no fancy workshop or equipment, no health & safety, just plain skill & care. Anybody who complains about their working conditions needs to watch what conditions these wonderful highly skilled artisans work in.
@@helenchilcott6024 while I do greatly admire their skill & care, that doesn’t negate the need for health n safety or PPE because if these guys get injured while working, they’re screwed for life…there’s no insurance or health care!
I work as a carpenter in the Netherlands and love to see craftsmen at work. I am surprised at how clean the bowls turned out in the end. Seeing some of the machines the old man use made me a bit nervous, but being his age still having all his fingers and toes, and being so nimble. He has my respect.
I love how they don’t waste a huge block of wood to make such a large bowl, that young lad matched the grains of the wood so well that once the master craftsman finished turning and polishing the bowl the grain stood out like it had been from one larger block of wood not from one slab of wood. This is craftsmanship at its best.
First of all, making a bowl out of a single piece of wood is sought after, its not a waste. Also, most people that do this use the chips and sawdust for other things. Did these planks of wood not come from a bigger slab as well? So how is it a waste to keep it as a larger solid piece opposed to cutting it into smaller pieces first? Doing it this way is the cheap way, or when you don't have access to better wood. Also, not having glue in your piece is considered higher quality. Where I give them credit is they are trying to use as little wood as possible to make these, to maximize profit. Although the extra labor involved is probably canceling that out. The only reason they may still make a profit in the end is because they pay these guys practically nothing I bet. If they actually paid these guys a proper wage they wouldn't be able to spend the time doing this. They would have to do it a faster way in order to make a profit. So while they're getting more bowls out of the wood they're using, it's taking longer and it's being done on the backs of these Craftsman. I don't understand your comment about the grain. Why would the grain stand out any different? It's wood. Whether it's a block of wood or planks of wood glued together, it's still wood, and once you polish it the grain will show. 🤷 "This is master craftsmanship at its finest" It's actually pretty basic and most intermediate wood lathers can do this. I wouldn't waste my time though. The amount of time it took him to make this I could have made two bowls or more out of a solid piece of wood.
First off he is a master and secondly, it tells me the art is not the new latest and greatest whizbang equipment you can buy, but mastering what equipment you have and the simpler it is, the better I suppose. Very nice and it's good to see others are learning from a true master to carry on. I enjoy the fact that he is using both hands and his foot to control the process.
