My youngest daughter born on Maui. We are definitely " foreigner s" living for over 30 years here in Hawaii....BUT my entire family feel the incredible " mana" and respect the Hawaiian aina and mana!! Just left the "9th island" here vacationing in my husband's home state of Washington ( family retired Air Force) my Mom had met my Dad at Hickman Air Force base....I originally came to Big Island of Hawaii with USCG ... I have always felt a connection with Hawaii and 30 years later and 3 children born in Hawaii we have all felt the incredible spiritual connection to Hawaii and the culture and only wanting to protect and respect Hawaii!! My youngest daughter im so proud to say is studying at Manoa and wants to protect native species like the sea bird ( she has done 2 internships on Haleakala... catching wild cats and rats that eat their eggs!!) very strenuous hiking etc. My son works with only native plants and trees...gave me hell for planting the aggressive strawberry guava!! Lol. Just wanted to share how precious i understand living in Hawaii is and always looking to give back and have gratitude to live here. If more people treated the island with respect snd gratitude...i hope and feel less animosity towards " foreigners" i will always be a " haole" but i don't have to act like one.... I feel so important to always give back and respect the people and especially the culture of Hawaii!! God Bless and only respect! Mahalo for sharing the beautiful song and translation if Ku Ha'aheo E Ku'u... My favorite prayer i try to live by.... Ho' oponopono 🙏

Mahalo e Celina Marie. Your comment about aloha ʻāina being felt by kamaʻāina and malihini is right on! I also share your view of loving the ʻāina AND one another. When we treat the land and people with ʻihi (reverence & respect) we are being hōʻihi and pono! Na Ke Akua e hoʻopōmaikaʻi i kau ʻohana.

Every year since 7th grade, I do hula dances in the talent show, to show people my culture and passion. My dad is half Hawaiian and I grew up listening to a lot of island music. Not many people here in America know what hula dancing is and why it is important. Doing hula shows people that there is more than just Ballet and hip-pop. It really shows who I am and where I come from. It makes me proud to show people I'm more than just the 3/4 Caucasian they see but the 1/4 Hawaiian they could get to know.

Anela, wow, nowadays, 1/4 Hawaiian is a a lot! Hula and mele are important ways to embrace your Hawaiian culture. I would also encourage you to learn ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, which would increase your appreciation and understanding of hula and mele.
