The fact that Christian as the king of vert during that era came in and stayed this competetive with Gonz is a testament to just how phenomenal Hosoi was.
@@meiphukingdiqq He even said that during this time he was skating more street than vert on a daily basis, since there was no vert ramp anywhere. I think this changed when he got his house in Hollywood and built a vert ramp in there.
Mike V. said on a recent Nine Club Stop and Chat that Hosoi was the first to ollie the barrier at the Brooklyn Banks, in like 1986 or something. Those dudes were astonished.
I was also at this contest and it was long,,but we had a great time!!The skating in the parking lot in sub zero weather was fun!!I also went on the day they had the vert contest !!And the year before Natas ollied the cow!!!Surf Ohio was a great shop!
I remember watching this to get psyched up to go street skating! It's funny watching it now. Gonz wins for street style attitude while Hosoi was hangin' 10 ramp style.
I have an original copy of this; it's from spring '87. Badger has on here Gonz at Oceanside - he lists it as '87, but it's July '86 - he won't change it.
Hosoi on street consisted of this: christ airs off jump ramps, stylish g-turns on flat ground, and doing coffin rides on his back. Gonz, in 1986, on the other hand ollied OVER a 12 foot gap at Embarcadero in SF AND ollied to handrails. Not one other person in the WORLD could do that at that time. Watch modern street skating now- it has everything to do w what Gonz pioneered (see Blind video) and little, if anything, to do w what Holmes was doing while he "street skated".
unless one's a rollerblader, we can compare...both skateboarders. All around, Mark's more dynamic and more ragdoll capable. Christian's style style style and power..but BOTH specialized in SKATEBOARDING everything.
Man, anyone who has any interest in 80's skatebording knows Hosoi kills it on vert. And that's the problem, this was a STREET CONTEST (?)! Judged by that criteria, Gonz was clearly the winner.. Any kid (like me) who saw this vid at the time could clearly see that. He did OLLIE TO A HANDRAIL in another run, which was well beyond most of the vert chumps resting on their laurels with slides on the corner ramp. Hosoi was talented - Gonz was visionary (no pun intended)
Idk y'all, I was more into the Gonz style in the late 80's.I'd have to give up for Hosoi here. The 10 ft Christ airs on vert was his thing but,not bad on street.
Hosoi and Gonz.. damn, those were the days, skating before school with the boys in the freezing cold, eating shit so hard feeling bones crack, palms bloody, shins of beat bloody flesh, cracked teeth, scared chin, ,.. My body is still beat to shit 27 years later. but damn it I loved it. Hosoi, nice, the 'Wallie'.. That was one of the few tricks I mastered. I sucked at everything else.. but dang. I tried skating the other day and slammed so hard, was like I am too old for this shit, Lame.
Hey shaymus crow, I know how u feel, I'm up there myself and when u slam these days it ain't no joke sometimes, shits brittle but trust me just going out and taking it easy and getting the feel back is so much fun.
Hi, this is Future You. The song is Dress you up by Madonna. You're welcome. And another thing, stop stressing. Everything is going to be alright. Trust me😉
Hosoi won the contest run, but I would have to see Hosoi ollie the Gonz Gap and Wallenburg to even start to put him at the same level of street skating as Gonz
yeah but ust remember like fully flared those wallrides would have been sick in todays skating and andrew reynolds bs nosegrab in the steep wallride quarter is exactly like this but everything is getting inspired by each other and more and more tricks comes all the time the happiness the skateboard gives us will stay forever =)
Edit-I go down memoryLane with this post.. The 'edit' is a warning of how I spell 'add'... Mark was sooo cool to 13 year old me... -I wanted to skate like Gonz and have fun like Lance, and have style like Ray Barbee... **a cool era from my memories...I didn't relate to Natas,Hosoi,Caballero at all.. Nobody did around 1989 but I didn't relate earlier around 1986/87.. --EVERY SINGLE OLD SCHOOL CONTEST W/ Gonz you can absolutely Notice for sure that he was 1 whole year ahead of everyone...I noticed same thing from years b4 watching Lucero... *Everyone rail slides= Gonz does it backside and exits fakie. **everyone exits fakie= Gonz exits shove it. *everyone 50/50 grinds= Gonz 180 fakie grinds. **everyone does manny on funbox= Gonz does Nose manny. This was unheard of. That's what I like about THAT era. You would be blown away by BRAND NEW TRICKS/concepts..ESP once the feathers and corniness of the 80's was leaving... looking back @ Rob Roskop is painful...I don't get it! I was 13in 85/86'ish and none of us dressed like that.. Because skating was either punkRock or Hosoi/Caballero Fabio looking.. That Fabio look musta been exclusive to Florida,Cali and Texas cause...... Not trying to sound arrogant.mwe were still str8 dorks! But that change from flat to up kick' Noses,,,from Powell to H-street. From axel stalls on curbs to Tre flips and backside 180 flips..that transition is probably the greatest transition skating had every seen....... The transition from 70's to 80's was extreme BUT did-NOT last the way the 80-to- 90's transition did....The 90's is still going! -I don't skate that Blond Gonz era shape anymore BUT I want to... Been thinking ALOT about the World Industries Colvinetics deck.. Not a Randy Colvin fan but that shape is beautiful and gets me psyched...look at the deck shape from the top side,,NOT the graphic side...the shape is gnarly...
The shapes from 1990-1991 were so rad. There are shaped boards being made now that are very similar (check out Polar Skate Co and their P9 and Dane 1 shapes), along with Prime Heritage reissues of iconic decks from that time like the 101 Natas Challenger, the Blind Gonz Colored People & Banana Skull, Blind Jason Lee Grinch & Dodo Skull, Blind Rudy Johnson Experimental & Jock Skull, World Industries Dune Baby Standing, World Industries Jeremy Klein Japanimation Girl, World Industries Randy Colvin Rasta Rebel, etc. Even H-Street has been resurrected and is putting Danny Way (Giant, Black Hole, Train) and Hensley (King Size, Stained Glass) reissues. Pretty awesome time for skateboard deck variety.
Sorry man but when it comes to making advances in skateboarding Mark has constantly progressed the most, and remained influential for the longest amount of time...I mean just look at his video days part, that part still has held up fairly well even in today's standards...The handrail he does toward the end is just as insane.
Gonzs took it Ollie to tail .huge Ollie to stale fish.h the Ollie to front side grab all while hosoi is ramp sk8ging and grabbing air and week Ollie's all with style
They both had pro modle boards. This is a pros only contest. And both these guys beat Tony Hawk in this comp. Mabey you don't consider him pro either but in 87 when this came out they were the top pros in the world.
Never liked Hosoi's street skating style..all flailing and awkward looking, sure the tricks were landed etc, but even when he's pushing he doesnt look good like Natas or Gonz
i dunno hosoi kinda does bigger tricks but something about the gonz, i dunno i guess the style, it looks like he was just cruising around with no pre planned run then again i could be wrong
Sucks that Natas hurt his ankle during practice and didn't skate. Tommy G. rocked, too, even though he got his wheel stuck in the bench in one run and couldn't get it out. lol.
to me Hosoi had style but he wasn't as technical as Natas and Gonzales... i like Paulo alot becuase he STILL sk8's with that ol'skool late 80's early 90's technical style like Natas and Gonzales... Paulo,Natas and Gonzales are sk8 GODZ in my eyes... WORD UP...
It wasn't a best trick contest. It was a "street" contest. This is the semantic difference I'm talking about. Not sure if you followed sk8ing closely in 1988, but general consensus in the mags at the time was that these arena things billed as street comps were a joke. Mike Vallely got into a fight at this comp w/ security coz he was skating real street outside a told to stop. We're on the same page, dude(or is that dad?) Hosoi was actually pretty good at coffin rides(seriously). peace.
It was the damn shorts and . After Hosoi went pony-tail and bike-shorts, I couldn't take him seriously. I don't care how "stylish" everyone thought he was, I was all about Mullen, Gonz, Natas, and (whenever I could see them) Stranger Sargent and Hensley
i Respect both OF these GUYS greatly..but in my opinioN....NATAS KAUPAS was better then both of them at Street... NATAS is the KING of street SK8iNG... and KING of stYLE.... Paulo DIaz is alsO a sick ass street sk8r as well.... NATAS and PAULO = stYLE GODZ
that's not correct. both of these guys were very much pros. hosoi was never really known for his street, but i believe at one time in the 80's he was rated no.2 in the world behind hawk and caballero was 3rd maybe. long time ago
Yo, "Monkyi" if my comments are a "joke" then why are you agreeing w/ me? "Gonz being innovative didn't translate to good contest results" You're damn right it didn't. You're missing the point. Hosoi was clearly the winner of a "vertical quarter pipe & jump ramp" comp, but if it were judged by its namesake, a "street" comp, then Gonz should have won. Simple as that. It's just semantics, and that ain't no fu*king joke.
Man you watch Gonz and I think Ill skate in circle then do the same thing twice and a bunch of lame shit! I know he might do something cool from time to time! but fucking look at that run! And hosoi must have been influence by the beach!
Heard he was the shit back then?? NO offense at all, but he was the best.. They did not call him CHRIST for nothing. He is now clean, and skating professionally again! He is still the shit in my book..
The fact that Christian as the king of vert during that era came in and stayed this competetive with Gonz is a testament to just how phenomenal Hosoi was.
Hosoi always skated street too. People act like he was some vert only cat because that's where his reign was, but he always skated street too.
@@meiphukingdiqq He even said that during this time he was skating more street than vert on a daily basis, since there was no vert ramp anywhere. I think this changed when he got his house in Hollywood and built a vert ramp in there.

I miss these days. When contests were put on by skate shops and the skate industry. Now its all Red Bull and Monster stickers everywhere.
I like your name
You know who doesn't miss those days? The pros! Pretty sure they want to pay their rent instead of getting a new skateboard deck and some stickers.
Kur** Cobain is right here as an 18 year old I could tell you some fucking things that piss me offffffffffffffffffffffff
I feel ya bro. Poisonous drinks took over the whole game .
That frontside channel ollie to bert slide at 1:07 is so friggin' smooth...
Hosoi got the Gonz here, awesome vid!
I was also at this contest and it was long,,but we had a great time!!The skating in the parking lot in sub zero weather was fun!!I also went on the day they had the vert contest !!And the year before Natas ollied the cow!!!Surf Ohio was a great shop!
what year did natas ollie the cow? is there footage online of that?
Thanks for posting! Brings back some good memories!
Holy shit, a black flag track from the process of weeding out and prime mark Gonzales ... Amazing
Best era of Black Flag. Yeah, I said it. Fuck everyone who disagrees.
I remember watching this to get psyched up to go street skating! It's funny watching it now. Gonz wins for street style attitude while Hosoi was hangin' 10 ramp style.

we always made fun of hosoi, but watching it now- he is so smooth. gonz still rules though.
unless one's a rollerblader, we can compare...both skateboarders. All around, Mark's more dynamic and more ragdoll capable. Christian's style style style and power..but BOTH specialized in SKATEBOARDING everything.
i love it how hosoi is always rocking some CONVERSE
Man, anyone who has any interest in 80's skatebording knows Hosoi kills it on vert. And that's the problem, this was a STREET CONTEST (?)! Judged by that criteria, Gonz was clearly the winner.. Hosoi was & will always be known as of being the ROCKETMAN!
that course actually looks pretty sick!
Idk y'all, I was more into the Gonz style in the late 80's.I'd have to give up for Hosoi here. The 10 ft Christ airs on vert was his thing but,not bad on street.
He didn't throw any banger in here, but he could skate with better style than anyone
This is excellent.
Hosoi and Gonz.. damn, those were the days, skating before school with the boys in the freezing cold, eating shit so hard feeling bones crack, palms bloody, shins of beat bloody flesh, cracked teeth, scared chin, ,.. Ohio Skate-Out was spring '88 at Hara Arena in Dayton, OH. I still have one the contest announcement signs.
Can anyone tell me what year this was?
Schtank Skateboards loves this!!!
The Gonz..every skaters homeboy..
Hey shaymus crow, I know how u feel, I'm up there myself and when u slam these days it ain't no joke sometimes, shits brittle but trust me just going out and taking it easy and getting the feel back is so much fun.
Ha... little question. I love the SST soundtrack.
Both were good but who won?
i want those vison pants
Gonz. No doubt.
my two favourite skaters
& Black Flag.
Extra Bonus
Does anybody know the name of the song in the beginning of the video?
Hi, this is Future You. The song is Dress you up by Madonna. You're welcome. And another thing, stop stressing. Everything is going to be alright. Trust me😉
Wow, thanks Future Me. I really needed to hear that.
HOSOI all damn day yo
It says Ohio skateout, but it looks like the course from Savannah Slamma.
So who won ?
Hosoi won the contest run, but I would have to see Hosoi ollie the Gonz Gap and Wallenburg to even start to put him at the same level of street skating as Gonz
JAY LOVE But that's completely irrelevant. Gonz didn't do that stuff until a bit later
yeah but ust remember like fully flared those wallrides would have been sick in todays skating and andrew reynolds bs nosegrab in the steep wallride quarter is exactly like this but everything is getting inspired by each other and more and more tricks comes all the time the happiness the skateboard gives us will stay forever =)

Ohio skateout, my first skate video

HOSOI'll always be the greatest!!!
Dude this is a pro contest. I have the whole tape. Gonz is even in the Vision cloths (his pro sponcer that made his pro board).
Nobody could never beat the ROCKETMAN!!
Gonzs took it Ollie to tail .huge Ollie to stale fish.h the Ollie to front side grab all while hosoi is ramp sk8ging and grabbing air and week Ollie's all with style
Mark Won!
Wow. Hosoi was the most popular skater of the 80's. He was more popular than Hawk even.
Wish this included some Scott Oster.
They both had pro modle boards. This is a pros only contest. And both these guys beat Tony Hawk in this comp. Mabey you don't consider him pro either but in 87 when this came out they were the top pros in the world.

he's the only one in the contest that does a kickflip. the crowd goes wild. funny now
It was the damn shorts and . After Hosoi went pony-tail and bike-shorts, I couldn't take him seriously. I don't care how "stylish" everyone thought he was, I was all about Mullen, Gonz, Natas, and (whenever I could see them) Stranger Sargent and Hensley

gonz did that handrail in his other run.
hah that shows how much skateboarding has evolved.
that 180 on the box and 180 is so simple
the gonz is the shit
rodney mullen at 2:51? nope, just a camera man hahahha. it does looks really simmilar though. only, one thing is missing...the socks!
Hasoi looks so out of place on a street course, even if it did have a bunch of quarter ramps. he did pretty good though.
i Respect both OF these GUYS greatly..but in my opinioN....NATAS KAUPAS was better then both of them at Street...

lol its gonz in the vid not gator
yeah your right pros must land everything in the world first try
Gonz light years ahead of hosoi. No contest.
its mark gonzalez not rogowski lolz
back then thats like saying how can you miss a 360 hardflip if your pro.
why do they move there board will there moving
Hosoi back then looked like Ginwoo's grandpa.
I wouldve killed to see hosoi on a mega ramp.
Just from this video Mark fell and looks homeless, Christian had style in this video, just being analytical.
i love christian's caveman
hahaha, this was funny.I liked the ollie into layback! But the outfit....too much.
I wonder how Mark is doing? He must be still in jail....
HAHA Hosoi tried to manual and let the time run out link in Tony Hawk games.
I love it when jealous people don't know that their jealous and bitter. You watched this guy fall to rock bottom and you enjoyed it, Pathetic.
gonz is sick, but hosoi's run killed gonz's run.
i think that i could of pulled off gonzales's run.

Savannah Slamma
It WORKED. Haha.

theres more transition than street
If meth was skateboarding=Christian Hosoi.
Weeeeeak !!
"ollie style!" (falls on back 180)
01/11/2021

jungle law
Imagine if Ryan Sheckler went back in time to this contest 🤔
Black flag :)
lets compare apples to oranges pfft. ive seen better contests at the AKA dog show
lol vs.
watching ths video makes me thin,"Man I could have won that- I can do boardslides and 180 Ollies!".
ill. hosoi is sick
