I SKATED THE EARLY 80s on a Sims Pro rocco, schmitt stix rip saw, and Vision mark gonzalez among other boards. I became very good at street/street ramp. I got several feet of raw air off 4 to 6ft high ramps. back then was the shit. Im 50 now and got weak ankles. all that constant air and slamming back to the ground took its toll!
I think Chris Miller had the smoothest style in the air.. Airing from one side of the transition to the other. Not to split hairs.. just sayin'. I was fortunate enuf to see Hosoi, Miller and Roskopp all together in CT in 86 I think.. That was awesome.. still have some crappy photos around somewhere..
It was a classic rivalry, even if it was played up by by the mags. They both represent two fucking insane disciplines of skating. Remember though, no one ollied into airs before Hawk, quite a few shredded w/ style and good lines before Hosoi... They both rule, though.
i was at MHR before a big contest there(my friend threw a dead cat into the crowd during the sticker toss). Hosoi showed up and owned that ramp, trust me, that was a hard ramp to skate; little flat, big coping lotsa vert.
Tas pappas played it. It's called smuggling. It's a killer game dude. You smuggle bunch of coke and or meth over state lines and out of country and see what happens. Lol I'm just fucking around. Early morning smoke and old school vids ofcourse. Yo bosshog is the shit. Hosoi should've atleast been featured in the games i think you know
This pool was kinda kinked and it didnt feel like it had any vert. Its only saving grace was that it had alot-o-flat. It was easy to go back and forth and do tricks on. Del Mar was a goody goody park and always packed-everyone had tons of plastic on their boards. The locals ripped it up though.
Lol that music... Love it. Love the 80s ✌️🤙🤘 people in comment section keep saying... Hosoi has style while Tony was technical... No wonder THE HAWK catapulted into greatness while hosoi got lost in the midst of Tonys dust maybe 88 onwards... The technical ones usually wins... You people should know that. 🤙💪
I don't get why people dismiss Tony as a mere figurehead or a trick robot. I guess he wasn't flashy as some of those other guys with their crazy clobber and all that, but he had some serious moves. He was definitely smarter than Christian.
Tony hawk is an icon but back then it seemed like he could never quite get that little bit of style he needed. Super tech but no heart. Just back and forth
Don'y get me wrong, I like Holmes, but people who say that Hawk's style is boring to watch compared to Hosoi's are talking a bag of crap. Hawk is creative as hell. He must have some crazy stuff going on in his head.
great skating but this "line- less" back and forth stuff is one reason skateboarding had to die for a while. Compare to Vans Combi now, or the recent skatepark contests -- lines AND tricks are what make it go.Not everything long ago was better.
They just have different styles. If you asked me in 1985 who had the highest air record, I would guess Hosoi for sure. If you asked me who was more Technical I would say Hawk. Hawk had so many trophies that it is my guess that he stopped skating pro coz he was tired of seeing his fellow skaters bummed out and hating his ass when he showed up to a contest. They wanted to see someone new win. Hosoi will always be a great legend, but he could not bust out a 720 like Hawk could.
The human league casually playing in the background.. this is probably the most 80s thing I've ever seen
Forget about the air show, Hosoi with that layback grind was the most stylish thing I've seen in a while 2:07
two of the best skaters of all time in one of the coolest bowl contest series ever. mid to late 80's best time for skateboarding ever.
hosoi just looks gracefull and natural like art but Tony be busting out some shit got to give It to hawk

Hosoi always had such style. I grew up a street skater but I always enjoyed watching him skate.
The Human League - Don't You Want Me, playing in the background at a skate jam. Classic !!
i was 12 and scared to drop in.., rad vid, they make that kinked pool look so smooth.
hosoi in my opinion the best skater ever!
85' 86' was the pinnacle of skateboarding for me.
Nice video. It's so nice to watch Christian skate. I love the old school skateboards too.
At 2:06 is the most stylish layback i've seen
I think Chris Miller had the smoothest style in the air.. Airing from one side of the transition to the other. Not to split hairs.. just sayin'. Awesome. Thanks for posting it..I had this on VHS and remember the contest format being brutal for the skaters...
everything about 80's skateboarding was awesome...
Hosoi makes it look too easy! he added the style to the sport.
Hawk has earned the right to sellout as you call it. He's been a pioneer and spokesperson for the sport for over 25 years.
Man this brings back some memories... great post.
reading tony's autobiography (occupation: skateboarder) and it's sick well done Tony!
mike.... u have some of the best skate footage on the net bro... thanx
Classic... The golden era of skateboarding...
1985, Human League, Addicts, skating- coolest vid ever
Both great, but damn, Christian is always all style... the boardslides are great but man that layback... a Hosoi layback is a thing of beauty...
This wasn't included in the original contest video released from Vision. Nice to see.
Hosoi much more style and fluidity. Hawk was way more technical than any other skater. Take your pick. It was all great stuff.
man i wish i could have been there to experience del mar and tony hawk's skating back then
It was a classic rivalry, even if it was played up by by the mags. They both represent two fucking insane disciplines of skating. Remember though, no one ollied into airs before Hawk, quite a few shredded w/ style and good lines before Hosoi... They both rule, though.
I rode a black hammerhead back in the day, loved that board.
2:09 ... unbelievable!!!
People these days don't know this was like clash of the skateboarding titans in the 80's. Hawk and Hosoi
Hosoi is the greatest of all time. He was all style. Made everything look amazing. Dressed like a bad-ass. Definition of legend.
Don't You Want Me Baby...
That power slide was sick!
i was at MHR before a big contest there(my friend threw a dead cat into the crowd during the sticker toss). Hosoi showed up and owned that ramp, trust me, that was a hard ramp to skate; little flat, big coping lotsa vert.
That music is so 80s
Crazy they were.doing these moves before there was concaved noses!
Would like to see Hawk enter in the masters division one of these years at the protec pool party.
Del Mar's keyhole was 10' . It was kinked but it didn't feel like it had any vert. The tile was the vert.
2:51 wow I cannot believe thrasher has been around that long
Christian had so much style..
Human League!!! That's some gnarley rad shit.
Hosio had style but Hawk was so much of a better skater in every way.
That was tge same year Back to the Future came out that got me into skating.
i lyk dat song and all dis old footage. it sux how skatin th3z3 dayz is for "homies"
Joe Lopes was the man.... I still do Joeless ones because of him.
very good mach up between tony and hosoi although hosoi had more style tony was more technical and nice inverts from tony by the way :)
The move at 0:41 is a Invert Varial
sweet song
2:09 best trick ever!!!
They should make a game for hosoi
Tas pappas played it. It's called smuggling. It's a killer game dude. You smuggle bunch of coke and or meth over state lines and out of country and see what happens. Lol I'm just fucking around. Early morning smoke and old school vids ofcourse. Yo bosshog is the shit. Hosoi should've atleast been featured in the games i think you know
At least Tony was cool enough to put him as a character in one of the games
This pool was kinda kinked and it didnt feel like it had any vert. Its only saving grace was that it had alot-o-flat. It was easy to go back and forth and do tricks on. Del Mar was a goody goody park and always packed-everyone had tons of plastic on their boards. The locals ripped it up though.

Dam! Christ had some mean lean airs.
I don't get why people dismiss Tony as a mere figurehead or a trick robot. I guess he wasn't flashy as some of those other guys with their crazy clobber and all that, but he had some serious moves. He was definitely smarter than Christian.
Wild music!
Man I miss the old days
hey man, do you know what ever happened to del mar? did they turn it into something else or is it still there or what?
sick man
@onelove1158 Bones Bergade was powell
is tony using the bullet chicken skull shape or the bottlenose shape?
Nope. The other way around. They obtained the footage from Chantry Vision. This all authentic footage.
hosoi gots styles for miiillleeesss
did any else notice theyre playing rick astly in the background
lol at the song. Don't you want me baby!!
FUCKING LEGENDS!
It's like Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson.
Tony hawk is an icon but back then it seemed like he could never quite get that little bit of style he needed. Super tech but no heart. Just back and forth
is that the only song they had on tape dat day lol
is this the same thrashin' film pool?
Great vid!! 5/5
Grest skaters both. B-)
Who won?
2:06 2:08 nice line
Is that Tony when he was with Bones Brigade or Powell
Allways hosoi for me.
I want a modern day pig shape with a little bit of concave just like the board Tony is riding in this video.
I think I had a copy of this as a kid. Is there a flatland/freestyle contest on the end of the tape?
hi, what two disciplines of skating did they represent? just curious. im educating myself here. appreciate it.
i fully agree. but that wall is 8ft. 12ft walls are fuckin HUGE.
How does one do a do Joeless one?
Don't you want me baaaby
Don'y get me wrong, I like Holmes, but people who say that Hawk's style is boring to watch compared to Hosoi's are talking a bag of crap. Hawk is creative as hell. He must have some crazy stuff going on in his head.

@Sasukingu hahaha hilarious!
song?
what kind of board was he using
did someone lose the Misfits tape?
No worries. We just want to get the facts straight.
you never saw Losi do them did you!?!?
who fell?
HAWK may be good now, but nobody could generally beat HOSOI.
The ROCKETMAN!!!
whoa skateboarding and Human League, two things i never thought i would see together
This song make me feel rickrolled
you can tell the second guy is tony
They just have different styles. If you asked me in 1985 who had the highest air record, I would guess Hosoi for sure. If you asked me who was more Technical I would say Hawk. @StraightPunkEdge93
Then i suppose hearing funk played at a contest would give you a heart attack! LOL...
Ahh, so who won?
how many bong loads did holmes have that day ya figure?.......
wow........ superb spelling!
