    It broke me so bad at the end that I read all its sidecontent (e.g. Children's Revivial, Drama CDs with Dream in particular breaking be again)

    It's funny how I disliked Chaos;Child ending when I first saw it, but the more I reflected upon it, the more I began to realize that its themes matched perfectly my state of mind at the time. I honestly found Takuru to be one of the most relatable characters I've ever seen in a video game... I've only played the Over Sky route so far (literally completed the first play-through under half an hour ago), but DAMN that was a compelling story. Chapter 1 felt a bit long, but once I reached Chapter 2, I pretty much put every other game on hold because I couldn't wait to see what happened next.

    I just finished it yesterday, and I agree it's one of the best VNs available in English. The story is great -- suspenseful and emotional with a crazy amount of plot twists that actually make logical sense. There are a few places in the common route where the plot dragged and I got impatient, but all of the subsequent routes were fast-paced and interesting from start to finish.

    Now, the Real 2 Issues i Had (I suggest you please read the whole thing):-
    First, Chaos;Child has a sort of Identity Crisis. while the Original, Chaos;Head relied on Different delusions to present different plot points (even spoil future events) and adds more context, the Delusions in Chaos;Child are more grounded. this might have to do with the fact that Takuru isn't a Shut-In, with severe self identity issues, so his delusions are rather comical, erotic, or downright maddening, but still, the sense of mystery and fear imposed by the {Sone me Dare no me?} [Whose Eyes are Those Eyes?] is missing here. not to mention, the catchphrase this time, as indicated by the OPs [It's Eyes is God's Eyes] don't really appear in the game actually. The Delusions are compact and condensed in their own reality. Honestly, 'getting a certain type of delusion that triggers a different set of dialogue later in the story' is missing. the only impact the delusions seem to have are to appoint affection points from takuru's perspective towards the heroines, and the immediate reaction Takuru will have after he snaps back to reality. There's no "I'm still fu#kin scared. who wrote those damn [Whose Eyes are Those Eyes?] everywhere?" monologue, even long after the immediate post-delusion reaction is done. Nishijou will comment on it, if you see specific delusions, but not takuru. I feel this happened because more focus was put into the Mapping Triggers.There's 7 Mapping Triggers, and Most are Very Integral to the Story. Meanwhile, C;H had 40+ Delusions, all quite evenly spread out across the chapters, But in C;C? it has only 32 (+ 6 Specific additionals). Also, the Delusions are very, Very Dense at the beginning (ch1 has 11+1).
    It just doesn't Feel attached to the story in anyway actually. and that's my complaint. It's like the Delusions are their own side Stories that are just presented along with the Main Narrative. and this is my Only Big Concern about the Game.
    .
    Lastly, some characters feel like they are left out after their short usage, like Watabe, Kawahara, Gen-san. Watabe has.... reasons for this but not kawahara. he appears in only two important scenes in the common route (and one of them is a delusion trigger), with almost non-existence in the entire remaining story, except for a certain heroine route, where he still plays the role of a "late addition but quick enough exit" character. i believe he could have been more fleshed. same for gen-san. i actually came up with the theory that gen-san would actually turn out to be an ally of the baddie later, but was instead shocked to see him being almost completely dropped later. he was being built up great in the 3 chapters, but he just suddenly dissappeared. i liked that character and wanted to know more. Also Shinjo and Momose (the only returning character) feel a bit less impactful than Ban from C;H. Shinjo is a critical character, but his backstory isn't explained at all. we got a mio backstory, whose was also shrouded in mystery, and momose we already know a little, so it makes no sense that shinjo feels so left out. though we hear about his motivation a bit, but no real backstory. The only focus here is put into the Newspaper club and it's band of Official + Non Official Members, who get fleshed out. but even here's some exceptions. Wakui and Itou. Wakui can be left out if necessary, but Itou, the Best Man, gets no love. His only motivation? He loves mystery and Murders! That's all? Seriously? Even his existence outside of the Common route is questionable, and he is the GOD DAMN BEST FRIEND of the MC.
    I strangely had already noticed the photo stuck in the lower right corner of the Mapping Board, on the very first Mapping Trigger, and i had just chuckled at it a little then. But that was intentional, right? It should be. But, Suddenly sidelining some important characters or not properly fleshing out those that are necessary to the plot actually acts as a bane to the story. Even the common route villain has a plausible enough fleshed out personality, and just enough backstory. So why did Shinjo get the short stick? Even his personality is a bit janky at times, not really embedding a particular trait or fancy. maybe because he is a detective?
    I seriously want to find logical reasons to explain the shortcomings, because this is indeed a fantastic Visual Novel, and will be forever in my top games list. So i want to defend it and my feelings towards it the best i could, but i can't still turn my eyes from these two major problems. there's some minor plot holes and inconsistencies, but they are negligible.
    And i absolutely adore the relationship of the MC and the Main Heroine, since it very much reflects my own reality, in which after constant struggles, i finally was able to come out of my shell. And then, strangely, felt compiled to put my life's ideals and goals before my relationships. i did ended up confessing that i had feelings for the person i love, but also added that they bloomed during my foolish childlike years, and that they should mean nothing now, since i want to focus on the future, not cling to the present, and cut ties with anything that might hold me back. Strangely, i got a positive response from her, who not only, actually also had deep feelings for me since childhood, but also apparently, had always idolized me. very ironic, since i too, always considered her my hero, who saved me from approaching depression. now, we have even cut off contact, but we are focusing on our future, so that one day, when we can be proud of our achievements and have attained at least a partial of our goals, then we can afford to be with each other, not now. Sure, there were conflicting feelings on our planned separation and departure, but i am just grateful that i ever met her.
    And i am exactly sure this is why the game's ending resonates with me great. it even resembles how dead my heart has become from suffering, that i felt nothing even until the very last dialogue box, but my my brain knew that this story is gorgeous. and that's why i will forever treasure the Story this game showed to me.
    .
    [P.S., Ever Since i saw you're Very First Video (about chaos child too) the day before yesterday, i dug up my C;C OST Disc, and been listening to a few tracks over and over while working. i remembered, my favourites were WORLD (obviously), Revived Shibuya (+ lite), Inspection (+lite), Mapping Mode, Networker, Far Days and Last Line -Shibuya-. i have been just listening to these so many times over again, that my co-worker got sick of it, and told me to change it up. .... so i put on Shibuya and Shbuya (Original) from the Chaos;Head disc. You can just imagine, how loudly he graoned ^v^]

    Chaos;Child is forever my favourite entry in the series

  • @rindou97
    @rindou97 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Chäos;Child is currently my personal and savage kick in the balls.
    I read some years ago Chäos;HEAd and... didn't like it. I think it was awfully flawed in almost every sense except its brilliant atmosphere. In my opinion, Takumi was a problem for the narrative of the murder mystery stuff and his struggle for getting his sword was just too long. The characters were just barely introduced at best (except Sena and the main girl) and also rushed ending. BUT, since NoAH is THE REAL DEAL you can be said I didn't read C;H yet, tbh. I hope I can experience it once my JP level improves.
    YET, when they announced Child I thought "Oh, so they will... make a good Chaos this time????" since the main character did look like a smart guy. So, once I discovered the novel was freaking long and I read a few opinions my thoughts were like "GIVE ME THIS SHIT, THIS IS MY THING". And when the anime aired I watched a few episodes in order to see how the novel was (I didn't have any hope, but once I watched the fourth episode I dropped it since my interest was high enough).
    When it was released I bought it day one for PS4 and... even it took my time to get on, I decided this month to be welcomed into the chaos world and... holy shit this is great. And I want to die so hard now, even if I just got recently Over Sky Ending.
    This game is like everything I wanted HEAd to be. An engaging main character, nice girls, and cohesive narrative regarding both the gigalo stuff and the murder mystery. But... this VN hurts so much. Not only because *obvious reasons of the Over Sky route*, also because... I'm a flawed idiot like Takuru. I'm a really shy person who also tends to try to be better than the rest and to think the common denominator is full of idiots who doesn't know a shit. Just freaking wrong-siders. Thus side, C;C does everything to make me feel like shit. A flawed piece of shit. This game has a personal impact on me.
    So I love it so far. Yes, I have issues regarding the murder mystery since the gigalo stuff is kinda tricky, but is isn't impossible to solve. Also, I like to see these kind of original mysteries. The genre needs new ideas, IMO. Regarding the delusion triggers: I agree, but I aslo think they were better in Head. And I think some scenes would be a bit better without music and just "sound" (Head did this really right)
    So all in all: I'm really satisfied and I hope the rest is also really good. I think Takuru is an awesome protagonist, I like most of the girls (Kunosato > Nono > Hinae (when it comes to *lewd reasons* she's my favourite) > the rest, so far. I have a... conflicted opinion about Seri right now; Uki and Hana are barely in Over Sky route), it is really thrilling and it is FUN to read, I was never bored in these 25 hours. 2017 was a great year when it comes to VN localizations, wew.
    Btw, should I follow the commitee of zero guide? I'm confused about the routes right now and I don't really now what to do since some people say "go first for the cheeky and hot JK" and others "Hana and Naotaka Hayashi come first my dude".

    • @RetroNerdyGamer

      I have to agree. I hated Chaos Head, and frankly while I know I haven't "Truly" read it due to NoAH not being in English in any form (and frankly after playing Robotics;Notes DaSH after seeing the RN anime, I really can't be bothered ATM. That was such a pain as I had to look stuff up every few lines with DaSH) I think Chaos Child is the better Chaos game. I don't know what it is that makes people think C;H is the best, or that it is better than Steins Gate. If I had to say I think Robotics;Notes (counting original and DaSH) or Chaos Child could be worthy contenders for being better than Steins Gate.

    I went with the ps4 version because I prefer to sit on my couch for long vn sessions and yeah, the script definitely could have used another pass to fix some weird grammar errors.
    I've only finished the common route and Hinae's route, but I've been really enjoying it so far.
    It's definitely up there in my favorite game list, but it's gonna have to do something absolutely amazing to push Utawarerumono mask of deception and mask of truth down from the top spot.
    I highly recommend Utawarerumono if you haven't played those VNs yet.

    I've changed my mind regarding writing my own headcanon. After some reflection, I realized that comment was right. This game IS perfect just the way it is. I might not have agreed with its message, but that doesn't mean it's not valid. It's like Alicia Keys said, some people live for love, others for power. And while I value more power, I know mocking love is a fool's errand, because that emotion is just as important.
    Still, I would like to write something related to the game. Something about Senri, after all the trouble she went throught. Maybe about her traveling to this little town in the USA. I hear it's a little foggy, but this town's citizens are very welcoming and the city not only is peaceful, but it has this power of putting things in perspective.

  • @JabamiLain
    @JabamiLain 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was thinking about making my own headcanon for this game.
    Now, I understand why you might have doubts, because the anime was a disaster. But, I've thought carefully to make sure I wouldn't destroy the story's purpose, and these are the main points you need to know:
    -The story is almost the same as the Common route until the battle between the pyro, Taku and Arimura. The two of them run towards the academy, where they find Kazuki who, wanting to help but not wanting her powers to get out of control, said only one word. When the portal device appears, the pyro is teleported elsewhere, suffering severe burnings that force her to give up the hunt. Kazuki then attempts to destroy the portal, and although she's successful, her arm holding the Di-Sword sustains some burnings;
    -Then, again, the story procceeds as you would predict until the battle between Senri and Serika. I mean, she is stabed, but Takuru's unwillingness to let her die and her own fear of dying and leaving the family behind, affects the entire delusion. While her real body was taken to the hospital, in the world of the delusion, Takuru managed to save her in time before anything bad could happen;
    -Wakui is the one murdered by Serika after she fails to kill Senri (or so she thinks). She does this both because she's frustrated, and because she read his mind, and it said he was suspicious that the Commitee wanted to murder him for a while now;
    -From here forward, the game happens in a very identical way to Senri's route. The doctor sends the rest of the family away to the apartament (I don't think they'd be allowed to leave Shibuya, after all, they're witnesses to the case)as part of the "Witness protection program", while he stays behind to look after the Dorm and make sure that even if the murderer appears, she'll chase him like a mad hunter follows a prey that leads to no bigger prize. But in reality, he wants the family to get close and Senri to reveal the truth in order to hurt Taku. And he doesn't want to get in the way;
    -After Senri reveals her true self, rejecting the delusion she had created, Serika and the doctor influence the delusion once more, making it seem that Nono Kurusu was murdered by Takuru Myashiro, having 4 november written in her corpse. Senri tried to restore her form as Kurusu in order to show the police Taku was being framed, but because she rejected, at least partially, the CCS delusion, her powers were broken, and she could only summon her Di-Sword (not real boot it though);
    -We then flash forward into the confront against the doctor. Senri appears around half of the fight only. But I'm still working on the details of the fight, so I'm not gonna go into detail about it;
    -Senri wakes up in the hospital on the next day, only to find out she has Kurusu's form once more, and more bizarre, was completely goulish. Wakui, still alive and on a visit to the hospital, explains to her how everybody suffering from CCS had been living in a joint delusion, and that after Taku broke free of it, Senri was released too, as she had already rejected her own delusion, but Kazuki and Arimura fell in a comma. Uki however, was a more complex case. Because her powers didn't develop beyond real booting delusions, she was split. A part of her was lost in that gap between reality and illusion. While the other, fighting to maintain itself in the delusion as much as it could, clinged to the mind of one of the individuals with CCS who broke free of the delusion, in order to use it as a conduit to real boot itself in the perspective of other people outside of the delusion, creating some sort of additional mini delusion that served to complete the main one. In other words, the same thing that happened to Senri, happened to her. Her real body and her delusion self were now split from each other. The difference is that she was not strong enough to bring Senri back to the delusion, therefore, although suffering from the syndrome, Senri could now see Uki's real form. After the explanation, Wakui reveals that while they were talking, Senri's body, having readjusted itself to reality, regained its true form, but she was still bound to look goulish because Uki was still using her mind to real boot herself in the eyes of both CCS victims and common folk. He's also aware that Takuru wanted to surrender himself to the Commitee in exchange for Senri and the rest of the family's freedom. Although she's now free of the delusion, Wakui still decides to honor the deal of letting her roam free, seeing it as an opportunity to test what happens psychologically when a person rejects the delusion completely and is unlikely to return. Plus, it's not like she could do anything about it. She would not be allowed into Hehiko anymore since Nono Kurusu was no more and her CCS could not be explored anymore. She would be free to have her identity as Senri Minawasa back and to go to another school, but if she ever tried to interfere with their plans, although it might cost him his promotion, he would kill Miyashiro, and find another real life Gigalomanic to take his place in the delusion. And if that wasn't enough to convince Senri to stop, then he would have the delusion head towards the death of everyone she loved, just like it did for Yui;
    -That leads us back to Serika. At first, we think Takuru did manage to change her. But after she manages to find Senri once again, she reveals she was still as psychotic as ever. However, she does not reveal right away her plans;
    I'm still working on how all of the drama should end, but I've got an image in my head. Uki in a vegetative state, but reacts to a plant she sees on a shop, just like in the "Dream Sky End". This is not officially how the ending is going to look like. But I was thinking. Since it's pretty clear the story should end with a bittersweet tone, maybe I should have this included somehow in the ending, in order to represent that despite things looking dark right now, there is still a small ray of hope for the future. I'm not doing this headcanon to create an happy ending. Like the doctor would say, there's no good storytelling in that (and I take it that the anime tried to give an happy ending to the novel). Simply...a more bearable one. That doesn't necessarily mean everything is going to finish with rainbows and unicorns.

      NGL, I like your idea of Senri being revived - but have things the other way around, after Takuru wants her resurrected (With the phrasing "Wanting things to be like they were before")- she gets resurrected with her "Senri Minamizawa" appearance. Maybe the whole "Ghoul" starts of as delusions, but over time becomes more and more realistic to clue Takuru in that it was actually happening? Well, althought I think Chaos;Child is a really good story, I would say most of the flaws are coming for the unnessary complexity of "the case". It introduces lots of elements that are never exploited, even in a minor route.
    The writing was good, but the plot was too wide and it looks like the author get lost in it, for finally getting an "easy" true ending going against all odds in another direction.
    Again. This was good. But flawed indeed. I did enjoy it, but not as much as Steins;Gate.
    Also, I got no problem to find all endings without any guide. This was pretty obvious how to do it: you do positive delusion with the character you want for the route, and negative for all others. Really simple.

    Your videos was one of the main reasons why I bought this game, but why, based on your recent comments, do I get the feeling that I made a mistake buying the game? Have you become disillusioned with this game over time or is there some other reason why you don't like your videos about c;c anymore? I think both of your videos are amazing and still relevant to this day
    Also a question: in one of the comments you said that the game failed in sales, but didn't all the games from sciADV, with the exception of S;G failed in sales?

    • @culIen
      @culIen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, thank you for enjoying my videos! There's a lot to answer here, and I hope my answers will be sufficient!
      I still quite enjoy Chaos;Child and most of the games in this series, but any exhaustion I've shown publicly has to do with the state of the series as a whole and the attitudes some of the fanbase has shown me in the years since I made these. Mages is a much different company, and I've grown a bit cynical seeing how they operate. They're sitting on several projects in this franchise that have been announced for years and most have been in development hell. I enjoy Chaos;Head and Child despite their faults, and view them as thematically important works of fiction. I'm even kind of excited that Chaos;Head is coming to Switch in Japan. My thing is just that... I grew up. A lot of my naive hopes just aren't there any more, and I'm more of a realist in many ways. Life happens, but I do still think the series often produces very high quality content.
      In terms of the quality of the videos, I think most creators on this site would have a similar mindset to their old content haha. I think they were important to my growth, but there's a lot of issues that I've noticed that just make them hard to watch. They're certainly adorable, but most of my Sci adv videos before R;N aren't too good now, imo.
      Lastly, it's only been in recent years that the games have started to underperform. R;N didn't do S;G numbers, but it sold pretty good upon launch. C;C was the first financial flop, and because it had such a big budget I think it caused a turning point. After that, most of their non-S;G games just didn't sell, and even their recent S;G titles also didn't do that great. I think people just aren't as interested, and it doesn't help that their marketing isn't great.
      I don't even know if Spike still publishes Mages games, so the possibility of western releases is now back in the air. Hope we see NoAH and C;C in English on switch! Have a great day :U

      Apologies for the language barrier, I had to Google translate this! In hindsight I wish I had phrased that better, but when I say the anime is garbage I mean so as an adaptation. It is a very lazy and poorly made adaptation that doesn't do the source material the justice it deserves. You can definitely enjoy it, but that just means you would love the visual novel even more and should definitely check it out. The anime cut so much and ruined the delivery of some of the best moments, so fans tend to think negatively of this anime because it did not do a good job capturing what made the VN work in anime form. Hope this helped!

    I liked the initial premise, but as the game went on I couldn't bring myself to empathize with most of its characters. They felt like complicated contrived archetypes to me. The delusions were unnecessary and didn't really add anything to the experience (for me at least). What irked me the most was the fact that the game went from horror thriller to shounen. I will concede that the twists did catch me off guard and managed to keep me intrigued. The true ending was great but it wasn't enough to redeem the entire story. I understand that moments of levity are needed to accentuate the more horrific parts of the game and I think that a careful balance must be achieved and this game fails at executing that equilibrium (especially with those mood breaking delusions). And as I've mentioned before some of the story beats felt contrived, forced, and unnatural. It wasn't all bad though, the themes and subjects the story tackled were fairly interesting and the soundtrack was amazing. Stein's gate remains my favorite sciadv game.
    I played the PS4 version btw.

    • @culIen
      @culIen  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well at least you gave it an open minded chance! Horror to Shounen is just part of what makes up Chaos; and since I was used to it from Head I thought it worked well given that it's a bit of a reflection of the protagonists. The rest of it I also disagree with, but I can't fault you thinking that because the story is unconventional and not for everyone! Steins;Gate is very excellent, and is still my second favorite entry in the series

    I think the true end is great after finishing and thinking about it a while, but imo it was presented in a suboptimal way that made you expect the wrong things, which reduced its impact while you're going through it.
    (Spoilers)
    Silent Sky was like an extended epilogue, and probably should be presented as such. It goes very well with the last moments of Over Sky and reflects further on Takuru's mindset at the finale. But by the time you unlock the true ending you would've finished the common route a long time ago. I originally thought it was going to be a grand arc that gives redemption to the characters, but only realized that the whole point of the route was that there's no redemption after the credits started rolling in.
    Maybe a better way of doing it would be to make Silent Sky happen automatically after the credits of the common route once you finish all the other routes, replacing the Serika-comes-back-to-get-you scene which sort of left a bad taste. Then it clearly connects to the common route, and will be seen more like the epilogue that it is. Bonus points if the dialogue of the climax is changed to reflect the fact that reality is slightly different from what happened in Over Sky, which also turns skipping off and tips off to the readers that they're heading toward a new ending.

      Thats not how that works lol. Good manga/games/literature/etc can receive bad adaptations if the people who adapt said material do a bad job. The purpose of the True Ending, though, is to provide closure to the game's themes, which it does masterfully. If there had been a full-on happy ending, it would go against the whole message of the game.
      I could go into details why, but I think you should take some time to consider it for yourself. I can assure you, you'll appreciate it more the more you consider *why* the story ended the way it did. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

      @@kumintsuyuri It's like @DrCullenPHD said...It's just not my cup of tea. I'm more of a happy ending kinda guy. I don't want to read something that's gonna make me feel like shit afterwards. I'll give the writer credit though, at least this VN is competently written. Which is more than most can say about their own. The harem genre is particularly shitty, but more my thing. Which is why Nono's route is the one I like most. (That could have went to Hinae's route had it not been for that torture porn ending.) EDIT: My biggest problem with the true ending was the anticlimactic nature of it. I think anyone could've seen that ending coming from a few miles away. As a matter of fact that's kinda how I expected the common route to end. Not completely.. but still.. there was no note worthy twist from how I expected it to go based on the theme of delusions. And Serika was giving me weird vibes the whole time. I knew she'd be a major factor. When your main selling point for your sub stories are your twists, than you'd think that the true ending would be something besides what we got.

      @@zuffazombiekilla I do hear that complaint a lot, that the game blew its load in the common route and didn't leave enough for the true ending. Though, I do think that a story like C;C's really needed the long epilogue it got, so I understand why they split it up the way they did, even if there could have been a better way.
      At any rate, yeah, it's really just a matter of preference. The way I personally judge an ending is by whether it succeeds in evoking the emotions the author was aiming for, whether good or bad, but I can understand finding the latter unpleasant.
