    I’ve been watching many of your videos love the concept..I have a question…Where do I start? Do I buy materials and build it myself or can I work with anything that I may have already? I want 27x40s in a club using the space on the wall as real estate and the dynaframe will be used for advertising. So I would need to be able to upload new images or videos to the Frame. Where do I start to achieve all this and what costs am I looking at?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Tilt! So the biggest hurdle right now is locating a raspberry pi 4 2gig device. Due to supply constraints those are getting tough to come by. If you can get that in a kit with a power cable and hdmi cable, you can join the patreon and get the image. Download that to an SD card, and then plug that into a TV or monitor at home to prototype. There you can upload images using anything from a usb drive to a web interface from your phone or even from a computer. Once you have that part figured out you can plan what your public venu looks like, but that's all up to you. It works with any HDMI based monitor/tv/projector etc.
      The patreon is $5 a month and provides new builds and support. The pi is about $200 now due to supply constraints for a kit that has the sd card, power cable and hdmi cable. Then whatever screen you decide to use. It's one of the lowest cost options for what it does.

    Hi Joe, I'm a long time user of Dynaframe and I'm a big fan. It's a great product, I dare say the best picture-frame software out there and I'm running V2! I've not transitioned to Pro yet however I'm interested, at least from the little I can find on the web. You really need to increase your web presence if you intend to grow your product. Your last youtube update was 5 months ago. You may have a significant user base on Patreon & discourse but unless folks interested in your software can see it without signing up for accounts it's essentially a closed loop. It's a matter of who is your target audience, your established users or new users and growth? I think you can see the conundrum.
    Anyhow, I digress... At one point you said you were going to possibly allow users to do a one time purchase. Is that still in the plans and if so is there a timeline? I don't begrudge you for making money off your hard work, but I'm not sign up for for an open ended Patreon account. Though $5 a month doesn't sound like much that's $60 per year. Microsoft 365 Personal is $69.99 per year... get me?
    I, and I suspect many others, would be happy to pay maybe $50 for a 1 time purchase, maybe with say free updates for the version (i.e. V1.x, V2.x etc)? I understand I can sign up for a Patreon account, download it then delete the account but I'm not going go through that hassle. First, it's a pita and second, I don't need or want a Patreon account. So how about that 1 time purchase?
    Thoughts?

      Hey Bill, great to hear from you and thankyou for the support. You're absolutely right in many ways, and I get that. Last year the end of the year life gave me some other things I had to take care of, one of the biggest was moving...twice. The good news is that I'm now in my dream home, but in that transition along with a challenging day job and amazing daughter, some things had to take a back seat. I chose TH-cam in that equation, but not Dynaframe's Patreon since I had supporters that were paying.
      Dynaframe is a very long term plan. There are multiple facets that I'm working on growing. To get there, I have a feature set in mind and a goal of what I want it to look like to be professional quality. I've built a team of three of us that are all working on the software now, and it's ages ahead of where it was from my last youtube video. In a few months when I hit feature complete on where I'm at, then you'll see the youtube engine fire up again revealing the latest. This includes things like fully customizable overlays to show exif data, time/date, weather info and more, best exif support out there, plugins to allow for things like instagram or pixaby, customizable and sortable static playlists, and more.
      In the few months since you've last seen it, we've added animated gif support, improved performance 8 fold, added the overlay engine, added a playlist viewer, the ability to 'direclty play' an image, the ability to delete images, file formats, online updating, and tons more I'm sure I'm forgetting. That being said, we have an idea in mind of where we're going and want to be, and we're close. When we hit that, you'll see the next evolution of the project appear.
      As for one off payments, we have a choice as a team of what we'll work on. I could focus on monetization and such for the one off payment, but then I'm putting energy into something that doesn't get me closer to that goal I'm working towards. Given limited time and resources, I'm choosing to work towards that goal, hit it, and then pivot at that point with a product that I'll happily and proudly sell to other users with a support story.
      Right now though, I'm not looking for explosive growth, the Patreon is helping fund development and guiding us on features, as well as helping us understand what supporting this software looks like. A huge growth spurt right now would flood the team. The thing we need most right now is knowledge, and we're gaining that with the Patreon.
      Please know that I've developed software for 20 years. I'm patient, and being thoughtful here. I take Dynaframe serously, as does the team, and we're investing heavily in it. When the time is right, and we're getting close....then you'll see the presence, a plan around how to purchase it as a one off, a solid support story which we can back because we're gaining the experience. And if you think the software is the best picture frame software out there, you've not seen anything yet. :)

    Hey- amazing work! Outpaces anything else out there and my newest project. Do you think an Orange Pi 5 plus (has 40 pin GPIO and standard camera interface) would work? It's got more processing power than RPI.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a good question...for the nonpro version (the open source dynaframe2) you can put it on almost anything that is running linux on arm, or if you compile it x64. For the pro version, we release it as an image for various reasons (mainly our teams way too small to manage support and development for other platforms, and we want to focus on features). We've optimized it to work down to pi3b+. To try to support more platforms would reduce the number of features we can add, so for now we are choosing features over porting. I expect the pi shortage to end soon (based on what the rpi foundation is claiming for production) and so we should be in good shape again. I do hope to be able to port it or provide better solutions in the future

  • @craigpamment
    @craigpamment ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very Cool. I have been wanting to build a digital phot frame for ages. Currently all our photos are on a NAS server. Does Dynaframe work with the photos and videos stored on a NAS? What would you recommend as the best screen/monitor for this project?

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  ปีที่แล้ว

      It does work with a NAS, and we have users using it with thousands of files. That being said, there's no 'web UI' to setup the NAS currently, and it depends on some linux knowlege. Essentially what you would do is setup a mount point in linux and make sure it's setup on boot (fstab ) and then you can add that directory to this. Your other method is to just mount it directly into Pictures so that it appears as picture folders.
      For monitors, I myself try to use IPS monitors, though I've also used Vizio 32" TVs. It depends on where you want it, size, budget. We have users that have made 8" small ones in wooden frames on desks, and I think we had a 5" build. I've run this on my 65" TV as well for 'room ambiance' with the youtube feature where I can send youtube videos to it. TVs have the benefit of speakers if you want Audio, monitors are typically thinner and IPS ones have great colors and field of view.
      Hope that helps!

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pi prices are brutal. I recently heard that they expect the supply issues to be resolved by next year and am very much hoping that's the case. I really wanted this to be a $35 (well now $45) compute system plus a TV/monitor. Here's to hoping some sanity is brought to the market soon!

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I should add, in the meantime...we're progressing with the software and adding features every month, so when you do get to use it, it'll just be that much better!

  • @paolob7282
    @paolob7282 ปีที่แล้ว

    Firstly, thanks for making such a great project and accomplishment! I'm on my way to making a list of everything i need to get this started, including timber for full frame etc, but wanted to ask something that perhaps you've been asked a thousand times already - is there any support of IR-Remote control or is it in the pipeline..? For next/previous photo, On/Off function for frame etc - if so.. what component should I put an order in for? Many thanks again.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no IR support currently...if you find an IR remote that can send 'keystrokes' to a raspberry pi, then it can be adapted to work with this, but will ake some scripting/python knowlege (You'd essentially write a python script that took the remote signal and translated it to an http call). I am looking into supporting some of the RF remotes, which would just mean you'd wnat to keep a USB port free. If you're going to frame it in, also make sure to get an sd card extender so you can extend the SD card and keep access. I'd also look into a small wireless keyboard that you can plug in a dongle. We'd like to have a bettery story here long term, but we have months of backlog already with feature requests. There are features even beyond this video that have gone in, and more coming!

      We are working on moving off of a pi but we don’t have a solid plan yet. Each platform we take on is a ton of work to maintain and support and test an image (plus buying the hardware). And we have hit SO many issues when moving to x86 that we are working through. If we can do it without harming the pi ecosystem which so many have invested in we will work on it. We have some alternatives as well we are looking into to help solve the huge lack of pis out there. Thankyou so much for your support!

    This is pretty awesome. How is this with integrations? (Home assistant, alexa, google assist, smartthings, ifttt, matter, threat, etc etc). I'd love if when I put on music mode my digital poster did eq visualizations, or for movie watching it shows the relevant poster, or launchbox/retroarch integration, led blinkly etc etc. The whole engine on/off thing seems only good for passivity, Just the thoughts of a random passer by that likes digital photo frames for movie posters.

    • @geektoolkit
      @geektoolkit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For home assistant if you use node-red you can pretty much control the frame in its entirety, but to send content to it requires a bit of work..you have to get the content to the frame (possibly via a network share) and then you can point to those paths. I'm working on python extensability which will enable plugins and allow developers to do quite a bit more for integrations with third party services such as you mention beyond that.
      We have an overlay engine I added in the past few months that can do quite a bit over images. For EQ visualizations it'd likely be something that someone would have to write and think through...would it be an opengl with transparent background source or similar. Most of the other things I think will be possible if the community steps in and works on developing the integrations, which I'm hopeful for

      GeekToolkit the new matter system framework and thread provides for a lot of automation triggers. Its all open source so it should only take knowledge and research to understand the APIs. From their imagination is the only limit really. It gets pretty crazy actually.
      There is a guy with a super famous amazing basment setup and he has the movie frames running automatically using kodi scripting. Emulation front ends like launchbox support external monitors. There are tons of apps and software to use a second computer or an android phone as an additional monitor. Plex even supports an external monitor for poster display. Pretty much all light strips and alexa connected stuff has music mode already with an available api to incorporate various hardware and triggers. Thats all thats needed at a basic level for any of these or all of these.
      You can get complicated to. I have for example. My launchbox displays a marquee on one screen, the game content and bezels on the main screen, cover art on a app connected tablet, and it loads the gamefaqs page on an app connected android ereader tablet. Now im trying to do similar to my living room media setup, which is what brought me here.
      Yours looks best however, but the setup would be like comparing setting up hypserpin from scratch vs launchbox from scratch.
      Anyways awesome stuff. I cant wait to see future developments

      @geektoolkit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CapitanGreenhat I've seen that basement setup! I don't have the house layout to compete sadly but I have some plans :D I know exactly what software he's running...when we get a plugin system built in then we'll be able to do what that system does, and quite a bit more. We have some prototypes setup to test things and have done everything from gaming frontends to kodi, but we have to wrap the code up and push it into the main engine so that it's extensible. Ilove the gamefaqs idea...I'd love to have two frames and when I load Mortal Kombat have a move list on one and the ad for it on the other :)
      We'll get there. We're getting there, each month we add something new to get us a step closer :)

    Quick question for you. Can Dynaframe be used to shuffle through still images, and videos? I have a zillion family photos, and videos, and would simply like to randomly cycle through them in a constant loop, stills display for let's say 5 secs, the videos with audio, play audio, and the complete video, then cycles to the next picture or video. Also, if dynaframe can do this would you be willing to put out a video showing how this can be done?
    Appreciate your time in advance sir.
