Dangerously Overpowered Laser Pointers

  • Those laser pointers you can buy at the store actually pack some pretty powerful technology, and a recent study shows most manufacturers are actually jacking up their pointers' power output to illegal levels- meaning some consumer pointers have the ability to burn retinas and skin and blind airline pilots!

    "Those handheld green lasers pointers may not be as harmless as you thought."
    "NIST Tests Underscore Potential Hazards of Green Laser Pointers"
    www.nist.gov/pm...
    "Using a low-cost apparatus designed to quickly and accurately measure the properties of handheld laser devices, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) researchers tested 122 laser pointers and found that nearly 90 percent of green pointers and about 44 percent of red pointers tested were out of compliance with federal safety regulations. The NIST test apparatus was designed so that it can be replicated easily by other institutions."

    Blinding pilots? My 900000000wm laser just cuts the plane in half

    • @brucejemcek6986

      South Will Rise Again Mw, not wm. Mw is a milliwatt, or one one thousandth of a watt. Yes. 1/1000th OF a watt.
      So, a 100Mw laser is 1/10th of a watt. It doesn't take much to make a powerful laser. A 100 Watt laser could cut steel.
      A 1000 watt unit could cut steel at a distance. This is a highly organized and concentrated beam of photons at one specific wavelength.

      Also, no one seems to mention this, but how the hell can you blind a pilot from the ground mid flight? I mean the cockpit isn't on the bottom of the plane. It seems you could only do such a thing near landing and takeoff and in the states that means you are also near an airport which aren't generally full of places for dopes with green lasers to loiter. I actually don't believe that thousands of people are arrested every year for this offense.

    • @kraken1473
      @kraken1473 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +DvidTheGnome well there's cases when pilots were blinded or disturbed by the laser beam. Put it like this. They can see the houses from up there, so a light beam can come through from those houses. The laser beam is a really compact strong light. The. Powerful ones release heat when they hit an object

      If you look it up it's basically confined to gangbangers flashing police helicopters and the odd news copter getting hit by some drunk idiot. This is not what this video implied, like not even close. I would actually say this is a completely disingenuous video from discovery or whatever old meets new media this channel is. The question is why though? Is there some reason 99.9% of people need to know (and in a completely deceptive spin type manner) that they will get the book thrown at them if they do something they are clearly not doing. This whole thing comes across less like news, but a sort of preemptive conditioning through spin. Maybe they have some sort of really sensitive new microwave technology, or theres a lot of particulate in the air for bouncing satellite feeds in some more advanced manner. Who knows. All I got from this video is that it's important not to shine lasers in the sky, but ultimately the reason for this remains unclear, as the stated reason simply doesn't hold water.

    Okay, first of all, I completely agree with all of this guys statements. People shouldn't be doing things that they are doing with laser pointers. Second of all, they are not illegal, at least in new york state they aren't. This is how I know. I was with my friend and he lives near a factory type thing and we were shining it on the workers wearing reflective jackets and they would glow up all green. Turns out they called the cops, thinking it was some sort of gun, and the cops eventually found us and asked me a few questions. I showed him my laser and he was suprised to know that I had it. After about 10 minutes, he let us go with a warning, that's when I asked him if it was illegal. He told me that it's okay to shine it on bilboards or something and not at people. He said that it was legal to have, but it depense on if you do something stupid. What im trying to say is that laser pointers are not illegal themselves. It's only what you do with it is illegal.

      Are you sure? there is a site "wickedlasers" . A 900mW+ green laser is like 1000$ and I just bought one green laser 8000mW = 8W for 10$. I live in Romania if you wonder

    • @baguazhang2
      @baguazhang2 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +InF3cTu9 8W green just doesn't exist, and even several hundred mW is usually $200 at a minimum. That's because green needs two crystals while others need zero. In green, they need to take 808 nm and with Nd:YAG crystal convert it into 1064 nm. Then 1064 nm is converted into 532 nm with an expensive LBO or BBO crystal. You need about 5W of IR light to make 1W of green light, if (if it existed) 40W IR to make 8W green.

    • @baguazhang2
      @baguazhang2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +InF3cTu9 That would put out so much heat that you would need a water bath inside your laser. It would require so many batteries that you couldn't fit them into a tube. Not being mean, just letting you know the costs and difficulties of going that high.

    I have a Wicked lasers arctic blue laser, I think it's a 1,000w or mw not exactly sure. It has several modes, low, high and strobe, constant, SOS and something else. Each one has a high and low power, I manly use mine for fun in foggy or snowy weather or shine it in the sky cause it looks like a never ending beam of light. I never have nor will shine it at anyone especially while operating a vehicle, once my friend pointed at my car when I was about mile headed the opposite way and I nearly crashed, no i didn't ask him to. And for a heads up to those which may have or be interested in an arctic laser from wicked lasers or one equal I was pulled over while driving because I shine my laser in the fog while no other cars were around for literally one second and I got let of with a warning that if I was caught it could be up to a $10,000 fine and 5 years in prison. Now that officers statement could have been somewhat false but idk. But if you ask me that's a bit extreme for just a laser pointer considering I was using it when no one was around that could be harmed other than me. I loved using it on the Miami and Hilton head beaches at night cause for some reason a lot of people used lasers for fun and so far mine was significantly brighter than everyone else I ran into and I found myself getting comments/questions from people that's saw the beam miles down the beach hour/hours later once I reached them. I blinded a crab in about a second unintentionally so then I put on the flashlight lens so it would shine a wide beam of light such as a flashlight only very blue and even then I had a kid 20ft behind me tell his dad that it was hurting his eyes, so I apologized and had mi fun for the night. I have ran a few test with my friends and had him point it in my general direction while I was around 10 miles away at night and when the beam passed near me it was very noticeable. Which for some who didn't know what it was well I could only imagine what would be going through their heads swing a bright blue beam that seemed to have no beginning nor end. Mine ran me around $300 US but to me it was well worth it considering they could be illegal some day down the road.

    In the US at least, I believe you _can_ actually legally buy class 3B or even class 4 lasers in a handheld form, though they'd have to have a couple specified safety features (a key, and I think a switch, rather than just the pushbutton). Here in the UK, there's no restrictions other than you can't sell anything above 1mW (class 2) _as a pointer,_ though I'm sure there's many violations of that too. As a laser enthusiast I approve of the freedom for at least responsible consumers to buy, and experiment (i.e. play) with, these higher powered lasers, as long as they're sold as high powered lasers and not pointers, and basic laser safety tips (like owning appropriate goggles) are emphasised prominently by the merchant. Obviously people who abuse them (like shining them at planes, cars, or using them in any dangerous manner) should be prosecuted to the fullest extend of the law... but us responsible laser nerds aren't harming anyone and are actually helping to develop the technologies involved, so it'd suck to impede our pursuits. I'd also say there's confirmation bias here... responsible laser owners will rarely use a laser in public (outside legit uses like stargazing), so naturally all the uses you'll have likely _noticed_ were people being annoying wankers with them.

    I have a 125mw green $225. I like to shine it at street signs while I'm driving, even from well over a mile away it illuminates a modern street sign like it's daytime. Street signs have thousands of reflecty things which does wonders with lazers. I also burn stuff, pop balloons, play with kids & strangers in stores & at work, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER even *CLOSE* to anyone's face! I love foggy nights! Shining parallel with an operating sprinkler or water fountain is cool! The rest is secret.

    I'd just like to clarify the difference between laser light and "regular" light. You said that laser light is columnated, which is not wrong, however that's not what makes laser light special. Ordinary light can be columnated as well, but what makes laser light travel so far is the fact that it's coherent. Coherent light is light that is one frequency and one phase. Meaning that all of peaks and troughs of the waves line up. Nothing overlaps and thus very little inter-wave interaction occurs.

    OH REALLY??? How are they going to know that I'm using my 10 watt, High Power, Infrared, 940nm wavelength LASER when they cant bloody see it? Plus I can use different wavelengths. Nobody will see it coming as it burns out their eyes from their sockets and leaves zero evidence. And NO!. I'm not going to harm anyone. Just making a point to anyone who thinks they are very clever and know everything.

    As a pilot, I have been blinded at night by a laser pointer and it seriously BLINDS you, and when you are on final approach with another human life next to you, and now you cannot see anything only 100ft off the ground going 120mph, it is quite frustrating to know people are so nonchalant about these things...

      I would never do that. I couldn't believe how soccer fans were using lasers to interfere with goalies with no concern of damaging their eyes. Pointing a laser at a plane is risking death of everyone aboard. I can't believe that guy only got 2 years for doing that.
      I think having laser like alot of other things might be handy in emergencies. I mean besides the regular science type uses. But I do think purposely aiming at a plane should have much stiffer consequences to fit the possibility of the loss of life. Also I think they should spread the word of those consequences so even the idiots hear about it.
      I live in town, so I haven't wanted to risk eye damage to others by taking my lasers outside at all.
      Anyway I agree with you. It's no joking matter.

    I build high powered lasers for fun. Anything from 100mW to 1.8W. These are used indoors with laser safety glasses. I mostly use them in my Electronics Classes to teach about the driver circuits for these lasers. I pop balloons, light matches, and burn wood. It's a lot of fun and impressive. However, laser safety is a must and laser safety glasses are required!!!

    I use my lasers for science experiments with fluorescent objects and chemical reactions. Lasers have many practical applications and can really support the advances in science, however, I am getting a bit tired of people misusing them. I think that lasers of over 1 watt (not 1 milliwatt) should be available to only people who are licensed to buy them. I think in fact that people should probably require a license to buy lasers the same way they need to get a drivers license. Further-next com

    I have an Arctic blue laser, but I got the "laser saber" attachment for just messing around. That contains the beam and scatters it against a phosphor coating in a polycarbonate "blade". It can't spear into the sky and blind a pilot, and the thing looks like a movie lightsaber effect in pictures.

      Well, as you probably recall, I've been aircrew on a night flight where the cockpit was hit with a high-powered laser from the ground. There's no doubt in my mind that it was deliberately and repeatedly aimed at us; there's no way any aircraft could accidently be in a beam path for longer than an instant. As a pilot, I'm not concerned that these devices are available to the public, but I am concerned that there's a lot of knuckleheads out there.
      There's no law that can fix that, though.

    I owned a 50 mw laser at the age of 14 at around 2008... I owned a 200mw laser at the age of 16... I recognized how dangerous and disruptive the lasers where. I spent hours and hours of researching the potential dangers of the lasers. The 200mw laser I mostly used with a lens that broke down the beam to thousands of smaller beams on a nearly 100 degree range.... Lasers that are ultraviolet can cause cancer. If you own a laser pointer anywhere above 50 MW you should be wearing protective glasses most of the time as they can cause permanent blindness.

    I have a 2w (2000mw) 445nm (blue) laser I constructed myself. I use it to demonstrate light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Physics is a wonderful subject to study. If people want to use high powered devices they should have sufficient knowledge to do so safely. I don't think regulations would stop people from doing stupid things. You can't cure stupid so to speak.
