    Your girl is SO, right on the money, about NOT chopping the roof! Don't do it; it'll look all wrong!

      So far, I haven't seen anything he's done to this old classic that looks right. Sad that it's going to be turned into a sled instead of actually being restored. Sometimes I think a crusher is a far better fate for these old cars before they get butchered like this is going to be.

  • @errolf6031
    @errolf6031 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Glad it is staying unchopped. It's going to be such a badass sled when you have it finished, on air suspension.

    Going to have to agree with the Queen on this one. Restomod this ride and of course air bag it. A/C is a must. I would restore the interior to what it was originally with any late model updates.

      There are good kits made for "hidden A/Cs". The best hide the compressors at the bottom of the belts (to one side). Don't lower a hearse too much or it doesn't "Look right". An acquaintance owns a 1937 Packard "Twin-Six" sedan with "Stealth-Cool" A/C-heat, and he STILL wins concours-de-eleganse with it installed!

    • @Theoldironworkshop
      @Theoldironworkshop  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We see if that motor is good. If so maybe I can put a 700r4 with OD. Might be doable. I like the idea of all caddy. But if it needs to be rebuilt, it’s more logical to just go. LS.

    My first home away from home was my 1949 Caddy hearse in 1969. I gave $20 for it and drove it back to our fishing camp along the Allegheny river. All the way home with no brakes. I was 17 and lived in it all summer by myself. Good times!! By the way I got the $20 after selling my mom's 58 Ford for scrap. My mom's name was Mabel. No b.s.

    My Grandpa, William Jennings Bond, owned and operated the Bond Funeral Home in McMinnville, Tennessee for many years. He had some cool old hearses. One was a Cadillac and one was a Packard. They were always super shiny, and black. He also had Pontiac and Hudson family cars, and a 1935 Ford Pickup for Flowers and the casket lowering frame. He also had the only Ambulance in town, a 55 Ford Wagon. Looks like old Mabel has suicide doors, how appropriate. That bold seemed cross-threaded, Nature's Lock-tite!

    Dont know how much you know about hearses but the ones with suicide doors are rare and sought-after it doesn't look like this could loaded from the side those are typically much longer and have a sliding tray on a track it looks like yours just had set rollers and locks. Strangest thing found in a car? Through a series of trades acquired a 1966 Fiat 1500 cabriolet basket case. The seized engine was in the trunk. It was towed to a house I rented and sat for a couple years. Went to clean it out and found a pipe with weed in it tucked into a pouch under the dash. There was no way the previous owner put it there. It had to have been there for decades. Smoked it. Got a buzz.

    If you've checked the engine properly as I think you have you will know that it can turn over, ie, it can move. That assumed, it can run, might not sound too healthy, plenty of smoke and flatulence. The old rule, if it gets air, if it gets fuel, and if it gets spark, it has to run. If you're going to this much trouble, stripping and reconditioning the engine seems a must if you really want to use it. An amazing looking car/truck whatever you make of it, but nothing compares to your wonderful supportive and indeed enthusiastic wife. Thoroughly enjoyable great family videos. Thanks for that.🙃😊

      He's like it's pretty messed up. About as bad as yours.
      I just you have to envision the end product.
      Chop the top, lower it to the ground with air bags with plush red seats. Shag headliner, little dingle berries all away around.
      That's just what I said to him from my first imagine what it could look like. Lol
      I know most definite I would lower and chop.
      With big white walls and the old school full crome rim and hubcap.
      Color I would probably go with a deep dark purple with ghost flames but actual ghost. Very faint. To where they don't show up at first glance.
      Have fun with your project there. I'll be waiting to see what you come up with. Always stay safe. Especially with floor Jack's. Lol

    I found a 6pk of unopened condoms in the business part of my 67 caddy hearse. I brought it straight from the funeral home in 77. I always wondered about that find but never mentioned to anyone.🧐😃

    I used to own a '49 Caddy Superior Hearse, (looks just like your '50) had it for 6 years & then traded it for a 1955 Caddy Fleetwood pickup, (you know, the flower bier carrier with the rolltop bed top on it?). Man those were fun days back in the '70's.

    For those horrible graveyard smells. I have used a product called OdoBan, it works on fire smells from house fires to wet mildew in 1970s era basement carpets. Anyway not a sponsor, the stuff just works, disinfects, even used a bomb version on my classic truck to remove the musty smell when I got it. Comes in a gallon size and a spray bottles, or bombs.

    In California was a car club. To join you had to own a hearse. The name of the club was-

    Very cool project.. LS definitely sounds nice, but I wouldn't do air ride, but that's just me.. I see you've already got your marching orders from the Misses, so we'll just leave it at that... I'll continue to watch your progress...

    How about setting it up like a party bus. It is sure tall enough if you take out the raised floor. Seating on one side and bar on the other. Be a cool ride.

    Awesome car, great save. Letting that rust out would be like killing the last koala. Will be a cool magnet for a business or just cruising.

    Use steelies with some of those great looking 50’s or 60’s Cadillac deep dish full wheel covers. I would suggest some wire spoke wheels, but not if your going to be towing.

    Beautiful old girl love your channel keep up the great job people don’t like doing Cool stuff like you do anymore and it sucks I have been building cars and trucks for 30 years so I know what goes into them they are not easy people think you could klick your fingers together and they are magically finished the truth about it is there’s nothing easy about building cars. Can’t wait to see you finish it it’s gonna be a bad ass car Mabel.

    the circle things on the firewall would have been for vents inside the car. It would have had tubes that connected from the firewall up to the radiator support, similar to a 54 chevy that has one on each side.

    Nice Caddy! Love the 50;s hearses. They're spooky from the factory! You know.... I believe the rearend originally sat on top or the springs in those behemoths! They were never that high ...and your girl is absolutely right! Don't chop her! She's beautiful just as she is! Too bad the 331 is missing. They are great engines. Kids used to pull them out of wrecks and bolt them into their street rods. Like a predecessor to the small block Chevy. They came with 4 speed automatics . It was a tough transmission but had its quirks. Just met her but I Love Mabel already! lol.
