This is the first video where you., the DRIVER have had the best method of driving towards taking it easy on the
"Crash Box" like not Romping the RPMs into the Stratosphere prior to a shift!!!
    Good on you!

My first vehicle was a 49 F-2. The 486:1 differential enabled me to be in 4 the gear in a few short yards but keeping up with traffic had the 239 v8 screaming at 55 MPH. It was my every day driver taking me to high school and hunting trips or wherever. I left it stock original 6 volt and all but wanted to roll with the traffic flow. To the purist l defiled it by putting in a Ford 9" axle with a ratio of 3:1. I no longer failed to keep up with traffic and kept the the mill at 2000 rpm. With the 4 speed" crash box" you aren't going to speed shift to overtake someone's Corvette anyway but I always enjoyed winding out 3rd gear and l found it was easier to double clutch between all the other gears. All the old-timers in my neighborhood used to brag about pulling "so and so hill in high gear with their trucks but most of the dirt and potholed roads are gone ( unless you live on one) . Probably too high of a ratio for most of you guys but l hope you see my point. Make sure you have excellent brakes and you'll like driving on the interstate.

I love the whine of the transmission and rear end on the older trucks. Sadly last thing I heard that whine on was on a 80s Chevy Schoolbus with the 366 and 5 speed I drove on a route in the 90s.

I have an F1 with the same tranny. A trucker told me the key to double clutch is fast on the clutch, slow on the shift. I’ve found that upshifting i clutch pretty much as fast as I can, then gently shift. Downshifting is tougher, but again fast clutch, blip the throttle, gently shift.
    Nice video

The groaning Ford starter hadn't changed until the early 1960s. I loved these bigger trucks (had a few in the 70s & 80s) but their drawback was they were geared very low, like 4.86 which limited their top speed to about 50-55 mph.
So great to see the stock gauges work. I would have a vehicle that didn't have them.

I wouldn't even if you paid me. That's a tuna can on wheels that will kill you instantly if you get in an accident. You have to remember speed limits back then were not 60-80 mph, they were probably 40 and 50 at most, as most cars did not have very fast acceleration or high top speeds, and it's not just about speed of impact but time for reaction if a crash appears to be imminent. We have the luxury of going fast nowadays because of so many safety technologies and standards implemented in cars, at the cost of the beauty of trucks like these. Cars became a whole lot more boring, but at least you didn't turn into a paste when you crashed. Back then, you WERE the crumple zone. It's not a risk I'd be willing to take lol.
