One pro for the air-cooled engines is that you preserve technology from back in the day and show how far things have come. And also how simple the essence of a internal combustion engine really is.
Yes, newer engines have more power and torque and such, but these old engines show a step on the journey to the awesome engines we have today in my opinion.

As a guy that has a 74 bug its nice to see the excitement the whole crew had building the motor. You might not be the fastest car on the road but you are able to operate a piece of engineering history. That oil comment is very true you pretty much have to have a quart or 2 of oil in the "frunk" if you plan to daily the car. One of the easiest motors to tweak and mess with! I am curious what oil weight you are using for it though.

Theres a reason why germany and generally cold countries produced so many air cooled engines, its because back in the day the quality of the coolant wasn't that good and people mostly put water in their radiators so in countries that reach extremely cold temperatures they would make all their machinery aircooled to avoid having crappy coolant expanding and cracking their engines, I grew up in a farming town in macedonia (the colder part of Greece) and even today I still see diesel 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder air cooled tractors (mostly german deutz tractors) and some t2 vw vans around

These engines are amazingly simple honestly. I think if they took a minute to research it's totally possible to rebuild it in 12 hours. I rebuilt my first VW 1500 (converted to 1600) SP 1968 motor in my basement in the dead of winter during college. I started it using a drill and 1 cylinder then tightened the remaining 3 plugs. Got a lot assembly fluid on my carpet, my mother was not happy.

I am an A&P aircraft mechanic. Believe it or not, almost every single engine used in general aviation (think Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft etc) is basically that engine. A horizontally opposed air cooled engine. And yes, it is shockingly similar to a VW engine. The cabin heat used in those planes is essentially the same thing. The exhaust is routed inside of the muffler. There is a shroud over the muffler that a piece of ducting connects to. And it robs the heat from the exhaust to warm the cabin. Works great, as long as there is no exhaust leak. Also the carb heat works on a very similar principle to prevent carb ice.

I got to the point where I could remove the engine, by myself, in 45 minutes; Install it in an hour and fifteen. In the dirt driveway, on a piece of plywood. Good times.

I rebuilt my '64 VW van engine after it threw a rod in 24 hours, by myself, with nothing more than a hydraulic jack and a small toolbox in a random driveway. This was the 3'rd time to rebuild the same motor, and also when I finally learned to lap the jugs into the head with some valve grinding compound so that they actually sealed (I distinctly remember a copper ring head gasket, not sure why Donut didn't use any). That 1200cc engine would put out a full 40hp! At least when running on all cylinders it didn't roll backwards down the hills anymore. I sure miss that van.
Years later I was in a situation where some punk had yanked the ignition wires off of a girl's VW bug distributor. I got to play hero because I still remembered the VW firing order.

This may be a bit pedantic, but the engine oil makes up a substantial part of the cooling on most automotive and motorcycle air-cooled engines. Even these old VWs had large oil coolers inside the fan housing. The cylinders are largely cooled by air, but the heads are partly cooled by the engine oil, the pistons and and all the rotating parts are pretty much entirely cooled by oil.
