I want to add that there is a huge point you missed that sucker punches the ketchup theory. There is a bit of blood or "blood" that came out of Sans mouth. If Sans somehow got somekind of ketchup affect under his jacket, or shirt; where does the blood come from on our right of the corner of his mouth?

some weird or extra points for certain theories because i felt like it:
    blood/bone marrow theory:
    - monsters are MOSTLY made of magic, not fully. so why can't they have biological blood on rare occasions? (could even be the same in deltarune, only some have it?)
    - it could also be that skeleton monsters simulate what a human skeleton would be, given the sheer resemblance (except for the skulls) so bone marrow and therefore blood would be simulated even if not needed.
    - hell, it could just also be magical just like the rest of him, fake blood, if you will.
    - as for why papyrus "doesn't bleed", it could just be hidden under his armour / not lit enough to see clearly under the armour. (battle body)
    determination theory:
    - given determination's connection to the color yellow, maybe his yellow eye is from that, with cyan for blue magic or something (idk, but i just thought it was neat).
    - sans doesn't act very determined indeed, maybe the whole reason he even tries fighting you at all is because of some extra DT he injected? ("forced" determination if you will)
    - DT might be red but the powers and magic behind it are yellow, thus the save point and such. (maybe even your HP is determination because its yellow, and it doesn't drop to zero when you "refuse").
    - flowey probably has his determination in his roots, given that the roots absorb nutriens and water. (and thus maybe he was injected there?)
    - i believe we never made undyne bleed because she didn't have any outer/visible wounds throughout the entire fight, she just melts and seemed fine for the rest of it. (armour shade again for neutral kills and before her undying fight)
even though people like toriel and papyrus get a bit of dialouge after they get killed, sans also just kinda walks it off for a bit before dying. like hes refusing to die just a little longer.
    ketchup theory:
    - it may have never been monster food at all, maybe just surface ketchup that got into the dump, or grillbs has a huge stash of it from god knows where.
    - he probably has set this up for a long time, just waiting for opportunity to use this as a prank and/or a guilt trip like mentioned here.
    - funny for the funny bone man.
    also-
"SANS! WHY IS YOUR JACKET FULL OF KETCHUP STAINS?!" "its the new fashion trend, maybe you should ketch-up with the times."

And it takes longer than the chest "blood".

7:00 you also have to consider that this monster child probably learned about blood from their aformentioned mother, who (as an adult) would know what humans and monsters are made of. However, one thing that I noticed is that the child says "made of" blood. Humans do have a lot of blood in them, but it's only about 10%. Maybe monsters have some blood too, but they don't need as much to stay alive. So, the child would be saying "you have a lot more blood than we do, does it hurt?". As for lancer, I dunno. I think it really is just a throwaway joke, and Toby messed up.

Sans could've met Alphys pretty easily. He seems to hangout throughout the entire underground in the game- though if you want to ignore that since he might just be following Frisk- he is confirmed to be a semi-regular comedian at MTT Resort, so not only would he go to Hotland often, but he also have potential ties to Mettaton and through him Alphys.

Something you may want to take into account as to why people believe sans doesn’t die at the end of his fight isn’t just the end of battle sound that plays at the end that doesn’t only represent a monster’s death but rather the end of a fight. But what people should take into account is the number of kills you have before and after fighting sans that can appear in the entire menu thing you go to equip items and where your stats are located. After the end of the fight the number of monsters you have killed will remain the same. Also you could make the argument that LV increases the more you distance yourself from your soul rather than killing a monster, killing just makes it easier to distance yourself which is why our LOVE doesn’t increase each time we kill a monster but rather at certain times like how undyne gives us a load of LV or mettaton neo despite being a one hit. It’s more connected emotion wise rather than video game you leveled up mechanic. Sans said it best himself, EXP is execution points and LOV is Level of violence. Sorry for the rant just thought it could interest you, cool video btw

I feel like the logic at 0:43 doesn't quite make a whole lot of sense. The line specifically states that monsters are made of mostly magic, not entirely of magic (Alphys heavily implies that monsters have at least a little physicality in the true lab). Humans are made of mostly water, and they still have blood
The actual makeup of monsters probably varies a lot between each monster, like how Snowdrake literally says that they're made of ice post true pacifist, or how ghosts are clearly made of something special cuz they can just go through stuff. Maybe some of 'em just have blood, and that's that

  • @eztli_buddy5999
    @eztli_buddy5999 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

Just as a small counterargument against the "determination melts monsters" argument, I remember seeing someone on Twitter make the argument that we've never seen or heard of a monster injected with determination that wasn't already mortally wounded or close to death.
Undyne had just been killed, then persisted after her death, so her body was obviously vulnerable. The monsters Alphys was experimenting on had already fallen down. And on top of that, Alphys says in entry 14 that the monsters she experimented seemed completely fine initially, meaning it would take a while before the melting would set in.
Sans might've been injected very close to when the fight takes place, meaning he wouldn't have had the time or the preexisting life-threatening injuries to cause him to melt. Had he already been wounded, or had the determination in his system for longer, he might've melted.
Obviously, I'm not bashing anyone who doesn't believe in the theory as it is kind of farfetched, but it isn't completely implausible.

My money's on the ketchup theory hands down, cause there could be some more explenations to why it works (mostly cap)
      - He put the ketchup in his pockets
this is most simple, but also adds the question; why doesn't it spill all over his jacket and come from underneath it? Well there's another possible expelanation for that
      - He put the ketchup inside his jacket, maybe in between his rib cage or smth. Sounds weird but trust me, it was just to guilt trip us anyways
      - And lastly, it's human ketchup from the dump
hey, if he was planning on tricking us why not use food that doesn't immediately turn into energy? It could be argued that if it was in the dump it would be.. rotten. But still, ketchup is ketchup

The only reason I don't like Ketchup Theory is because despite how strong fans make the connection seem, the only interaction with Ketchup that Sans has is when he's pranking Frisk. Depending on whether you say yes or no to the ketchup he either dumps it on your food or drinks it.
As for him working with ketchup, that's only referenced once and it's mentioned alongside relish and I think mustard to set up that he actually uses his lookout stands as hotdog stands.
Now granted, a connection is a connection. So I won't say the theory is impossible, it just implies that Sans has a larger connection to ketchup than he does and it reminds me of the early days where everyone acted like he had a ketchup addiction.

As much as I hate it though, Ketchup Theory is the most likely.
However, I won't shut down deltarune theory just yet because it does seem like Toby is on the fence about whether he wants monsters to have blood or not since he bounces back and forth about it in the game. So I think we'll know definitively if they have blood or not in the final release.

25:40 . As you mentioned the biggest flow is indeed that monster food conversts into instant energy. But this is a bigger flow than you might realize since ketchup comes out from his mouth. If ketchup actually entered his mouth it would have converted into magic.
Also in 21:30. I believe that Sans died but you didn't do justice to the theory that states he didn't die . The reason people are saying that except that you don't see him turn into dust it's because your kill counter doesn't increase. Which is a big problem . Now I believe that Toby forgot to code it since after Sans you meet Asgore and you don't have a chance to see your stats again but then it raises the question why hasn't Toby changed it after all these years.

Here’s my theory. It says in that librarby book that monsters are mostly magic and humans mostly water. Not fully. Maybe sans is just less magic that the other monsters and more water, allowing for him to have some sort of blood. Think about it. He doesn’t have much health, he definitely seems out of shape as if he doesn’t have enough magic to support him, what with him sweating in his battle and him taking shortcuts instead of walking all the way to a place.

I always thought that up until the Sans fight, your weapons weren't really "weapons" - they were more improvised weapons or magic-based (like the Toy Knife and Empty Gun) while by the Sans fight, you'd have the Real Knife in your posession and with the incredibly high damage output it has on its stats (and Toby probably assumed you'd be fighting with it) so with a _real_ weapon in posession, the attack on Sans actually _did_ do such a tremendous amount of damage that it'd cause one to begin bleeding.

19:11 Another piece of evidence to counter this is that Flowey is able to remember through our resets because of their high amounts of dt, however sans uses "tricks" and facial recognition rather than actually remembering previous attempts.
20:20 Also for this part, I believe that the color for determination is white, as the amalgamations (which are basically liquid dt beings) are mostly white when viewed. Also, the attack patterns of enemies (which are white) tend to be smaller with less-determined enemies, and far more various and complex with bosses (it also connects blue and orange attacks as they are the only trait colors that the soul does not get turned into).
Also the ketchup that sans drinks might be human ketchup, which reminds him from the past "world" he used to live in.
My theory is that the underground might be a special dark world created by the original humans who trapped the monsters, in which the monsters may have evolved to live in there or something, deltarune takes place in a mostly monster island/town that doesn't have much communication with the human outside world, however the war never started and humans & monsters live peacefully (like a pacifist vs genocide ending to the war I guess). The only problem I found with this theory is that the ui in undertake and in the surface is the same, but maybe its cuz theyre both alone or smth? This theory explains why magic seems to be absent in deltarune and why monsters might bleed. Though tbh regarding sans I think the ketchup theory is the most likely.

Thats what is highlighted with sometimes out of battle, flowey is a golden flower, the type from charas village, the save points are also yellow
    15:07
Wrong, the anomaly is flowey. This is the case since if you do genocide as your first run, he still talks about anomalies in the space time continuum, and who might we think of that may have been reseting a lot? Flowey
    16:05
No? If alphys made up the term then why would the narrator (whos probably chara) use it?
    16:23
Durectly after killing undyne is when you see mettaton, so he couldnt have been involved, and allhys says in the hotland abourted geno ending that she had started evacuating people before undyne even fought you, which is why asgore didnt absourb the souls. Since alphys didnt watch the fight and see her lose.
    23:58
Also possible since he was dying and all that he could actually see or hear papyrus in some way, like in a form of afterlife
    24:15
Entierly possible sans was holding onto the ketchup, storing it in his jacket in case he absolutely needed it for some reason to heal (not unlikely fiven how long hes alive before he turns to dust) but the plan just sorta backfired on account of it being slashed into 2

Imma be honest, whenever I wonder why sans bleeds, I just say "there's not really an answer to this." At first, I thought it was like in Delta Traveler, where you become so strong to the point that you can now draw blood. The major gap in that idea though is that we kill not only Asgore, but also Flowey, yet they do not bleed. So now, I believe it's either Jaru's theory of "Sans is from Deltarune, but Papyrus is not", the theory that sans bleeds because the bones that were slashed have lots of blood, where papyrus' slash barely has any blood in comparison. (Very unlikely, since it implies there should've been SOME blood.), or it's a spare bottle of Ketchup sans was holding onto. Out of all of them, though, I think he did in face have a spare ketchup bottle, as it's very in-character for him.

The last one doesn’t really make sense since he bleeds from his mouth too, and I just find the Blood = Ketchup theory personally iffy, even though I have seen good stuff that uses it.
Sans bleeding because those bones have a lot of blood (and/or the blood marrow theory I sometimes see too) is iffy, because UT monsters shouldn’t bleed, the neck and/or jugular in irl would bleed a lot (though, yes, it is probably different, because Paps is a skeleton), and like u said Paps didn’t bleed at all, even he probably should have at least some w/ this theory, and blood marrow is not the same as actual blood.
I am somewhat off on Sans (and Paps either being from it or actually not too) being from DR personally, but this one would be harder for me to explain why. I have seen good stuff use this theory, and I don’t I hate it or anything, just not super sold on it.

As much as the ketchup theory is sort of logical, despite monster food being converted you could say he strapped it to his chest or something (but than why would it come from his mouth) or you could say he found ketchup from the dump so it’s human food,so it wouldn’t convert instantly (although far fetched)
My gripe with it is that it doesn’t really…fit the theme of the Genoicde route?
I mean it’s supposed to be dark and eerie, serious.
The game literally, from what I recall in the code goes into “serious mode” in Geno.
Sans having this dark moment where he bleeds and than Toby just going “oh yeah it’s funni ketchup to guilt trip lol” seems more comedic and doesn’t fit the theme of the Geno route.
Also, human magic is connected to magical ITEMS,the monster books state that monsters themselves are MADE of magic and humans cannot express themselves with it,but they never said they couldn’t use it themselves.
They pursumably could still use a wand or something to that extent, although it would probably take longer to master hence why they needed their 7 strongest to do it and because it is linked to a item they cannot express their “emotions” through it.

I just found your channel with this video, and honestly I can really appreciate how you explain a lot of evidence but then also ramble on about your feelings and opinions. This was a very fun video to watch.
I feel like if Sans and Papyrus are from Deltarune then it can't be an alternate universe to Undertale, because we didn't see their Undertale counterparts and i doubt that would be kept from us. Not everyone in Deltarune has an Undertale counterpart, but the major players from Undertale are all in Deltarune. Toriel, Asgore, Asriel, Undyne, Alphys, Mettaton, etc etc.

    • @kayden8093

I doubt they have undertale counterparts. most of our actual main characters in deltarune don't have them, I don't think it's much of stretch for them to be unique to deltarunes universe just like Susie and Lancer and Noelle etc and have traveled over. although I admit that makes me realise they probably both do have to be from deltarune if either of them are, and papyrus being from deltarune doesn't really work as well for me.

  • @JVstarry
    @JVstarry 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Solid video, and I'd like to add some anecdotes to details that I found challenging:
    - The books state that humans don't know the joys of self-expression through magic, not explicitly that they can't use magic altogether.
    - It's not clear whether Frisk crossed the barrier in neutral. All that is seen is them at the last room in the game. Some theorize that the reason why we don't see a cutscene of them on the surface like the pacifist ending or why they don't pick up their calls is because they failed to make it through the barrier, and passed or was trapped in the process. Some other hypotheses state that the power of the human souls may have allowed Frisk a single passage outside the barrier. If neither the neutral ending or the books are plot holes, it would make Sans' blood a very large and lonely plot hole.
    - Sans being from Deltarune (predicated on the presumption that monsters do have blood) would be strange considering that, if Papyrus was also from DR, he would be the only DR monster with a confirmable lack of blood contrasting Sans' presence of blood. It is plausible that there's variance in the presence of blood in monsters from DR, since I can't fathom how a fire monster like the one in the Hometown diner would ever contain blood.
You did a good job covering the leading theories. It's fun seeing how people continue to develop the story of the game's world almost a decade later.

Sans's illusion magic comes in a multitude of instances. First is when he cloaks his entire body to make it black, which can possibly be extended to making his pupils invisible. Another possible instance of illusion magic is how the Grillby's restaurant appears to go completely still when he talks to Frisk about Papyrus and "the flower." That's about it

Sans discourse have been going hot for nine years, like, this lazy bone can fit so many plot holes in him. Honestly I think Toby is just trying to figure it out himself, lmao.
I mean, sans clearly has a connection to gaster (very clearly defined character) because of the gaster blaster (mainly) but the chronology of gaster being a royal scientist doesn’t match with the supposed age(?) of sans or what we know of him since “arriving” to snowdin.
Sans BLEEDS?!?! while papyrus doesn’t, we don’t know what papyrus special attack is (the reveal would be huge and could potentially reveal many things about the lore), papyrus himself doesn’t seem to know a whole lot about sans because “sans never tells anyone anything!”, sans can manipulate space and time(???) and nobody seems to question it, it is just like that (although it is more like nobody can explain it, so we just gave up).
A better question would be WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT SANS AND PAPYRUS?!?! my response would be “two skeleton brothers that reside in snowdin, insert papyrus lore, insert sans lore” but people are even questioning if sans is actually a skeleton (very justifiably so, but still).

While its not directly confirmed that monsters have blood in Deltarune, it does seem to be heavily implied that monsters are physically more similar to humans in Deltarune than in Undertale.
In Undertale the main difference between humans and monsters is that monsters are made mostly of magic while humans are made mostly of physical matter. This leads to humans being able to hold more determination than monsters. The existence of special monster food that gets absorbed instead of digested like human food. Monsters turning to dust when killed. Etc.
In Deltarune none of these things come up. Magic only exist in the dark world, meaning monsters cant be made from it. All Lightners are said to be capable of having determination. There is seemingly no difference between between human and monster food. And while we dont know wether or not monsters turn to dust, it hasnt been confirmed that they do either. But with Rudy and Berdly we may get an answer to that soon.
Meaning they are also made of mostly physical matter in Deltarune, which would/could include blood.
To me asking if monsters bleed in Deltarune would be like asking if they poop. They didnt in Undertale but the reason why they didnt doesnt exist in Deltarune so while it hasnt been confirmed, it can be very much assumed until proven otherwise.
In my eyes, this makes the Sans is from Deltarune theory the most likely explanation. Not to mention all of the ties Sans has to Gaster and Gaster has to Deltarune.

Yellow is just a way of highlighting, many other texts and dialogues use it (especially the frogs). Determination is actually associated with the color red during the game, but this does not apply to the color of the soul because other humans who have different soul colors also had determination and the power to save the game. This is revealed in one of Toriel's first calls in which she strangely says that she already knows the other humans without ever having seen them before, indicating that the humans used save-points.
And besides, although we actually hear the sound of a monster dying and we increase in level (love), Sans' death is not counted, as if his probable death didn't really matter in the game. And this really makes me think that he doesn't count as one of the deaths because he isn't from the world of Undertale and comes from Deltarune.
Furthermore, I believe that the blood is really ketchup, as he always carries it on his coat, he even drinks it on our date at Grillby's and even offers us to put it on our food (although he spills too much and we can't really eat it).

    Thinking about it
Maybe "Toby thinks it's dramatic" isn't far off
    Maybe it's something more powerful
It's a metaphor of some kind?
Like how in Puss in Boots 2, Puss bleeds in a kid's movie. Sans is the only monster to bleed; whether it's possible for a monster to do so or not, we're bound to interpret the blood more powerfully as guilt than dust. Because dust, whilst still guilt-inducing, would be more cathartic and like "I've done it" rather than "what have I done?"
The sudden inclusion of blood humanises the characters in a similar way to their character arcs. However, whilst the character arcs in general are to make you form bonds with the monsters, their positive arcs during Genocide use those human-to-monster bonds to continuously add more and more powerful negative emotions throughout the run.
It could be a stretch, but given Undertale is more of a eudaimonic game in my experience; where after Pacifist I just could NOT bring myself to kill anyone, I think some kind of guilt-inducing metaphor or underlying meaning is part of what Toby intended.
I'm not entirely sure how to word that better, sorry.
    EDIT: Hey sorry, I'm back
Maybe the blood is both a metaphor on guilt and of murder. As murder is essentially needless bloodshed. As well as this, the inclusion - and only inclusion - of monster blood is a shock tactic similar to the one in Puss in Boots 2 to catch the player off-guard.

The thing with ketchup theory and it not converting to energy is a bit weird though. Sure Sans is a monster, but he's also a *skeleton monster.* Where would the ketchup (or any food really) go to be converted into energy?
He's an undead monster, which excluding the ghosts, are the only ones in the entire Underground. Additionally, even Napstablook presumably doesn't eat regular monster food, since he has ghost food in his fridge, implying he also wouldn't be able to convert regular food into energy. Thus, Sans' ketchup just kinda... Sits there in his jacket.
I don't recall where it was shown exactly, but there was a sprite of Sans drinking some sort of milkshake or other while laying on a chair, and the liquid did end up seeping out from underneath him too.
