You can tell they are young but Man this was the foundation for all of it. They Literally Invented a New Fusion of other elements. One Of My Favorites.

"A lot of times the jazz audience is a certain kind of audience... but here, it's not so much that they're jazz fans as it's they're music fans, that's what we like, people who are just open to good music, not confined by the shackles of style." - John Medeski

Forever grateful to the ultimate frisbee player Mike Rice at WVU for introducing me to one of my favorite bands! Always great live. That one time seeing them and Maceo Parker joining them for a tune is one of my live experience highlights.

It has been a journey watching the evolution of these guys, and on infinite levels. Jm & illyB were both accomplished at the time of this recording. Chris came outta nowhere and has become, with his bro, a current conquerer of live music! Amazing. I plan to see the wood bros this november.

I first heard of them around 1997, through a book on the Hammond B3 Organ, which featured a small article on Medeski. and also had a picture of him playing in action. Something about that pic with the intense look on JM's face that made me remember his name. The Napster outbreak of 99, is when I first heard live bootlegs of them from the Phish opener gigs, and have been hooked ever since. Never had the chance to see them...yet, I heard they are in the studio. hopefully will tour the Toronto area at some point.

I think that it's remarkable that they hadn't yet released Chubb SUbb prior to the time that they played this gig, in 1993. The song, to the best of my knowledge, was released in 1995 on the album Friday Afternoon in the Universe. I've had the album for years but didn't realize that it was as old as it is.

Apparently that song was from one of their first jams at Billy's.
