I've never liked the organ in jazz, but this playing by John Medeski is close to my heart. He uses the sound of the organ the way I like it. John is a special craftsman

John Medeski is unreal embodiment of sentasmic happiness dancing on a vibrational wave of color transformed into a beautiful landscape of dream matter.
The beginning of their set is such a vibe, absolutely amazing how they can pull it apart and stick it back together, pull it apart, stick it back together, masters of the groove 46:11 that dissonance in the two notes
Wow, they quickly entered top 5 bands of all time after the first 15 minutes of this. True improvisation at its absolute finest. Groovy, always musical, adventurous. *chefs kiss*
MMW are the only band in (er co-opted by) the jam band scene who can improvise, and it never, ever sounds like they’re aimlessly noodling on a guitar or a vacuum cleaner for 10+ minutes that goes nowhere. Where they end up & the path they take to get there are thrilling, mind-bending, unexpected, and jaw-dropping. It never fails. Some shows are especially transcendent, but I have never heard them have an “off night”. Every show I’ve been to, I’m completely zoned-in & hyper-focused, never once distracted.
3:08 ...whooooaaaah. Somebody glue that keyboard down! 20:44 ...he's been pounding that A natural! 29:41 ...Medeski's hands look like fish flopping around on dry land, and sound like funk Zeus. MedesKi Martin & Wood, best lezzlies I have heard in 35 or forty years at the Halfway Barout on the way to Frita Beach...Gods Country...You know where that is John Anderson..lol....Thanks for posting kid...BOP
by the looks of it, Medeski is playing a Hammond A100 Organ through a Leslie 145, Hohner D6 Clavinet, ARP Solina String Ensemble, Wurlitzer 200 Electric Piano, Mellotron M400 and Moog Voyager.
***** definitely not a Wurlitzer 200. Pretty sure it's a 140b. I once chatted with his keyboard tech after a show who told me that Medeski has a whole bunch of Wurlitzers, most of them broken in some way. At that particular show he used a Wurlitzer 106. Also that's Medeski's personal A100 (always has the back panel off) and personal D6 (has the carvings on the sides and the front panel off). Notice the A100 has a broken key at this show (16:05).
Jeffrey Manian oops my mistake, wasn't sure, I thought it might have been a blond coloured Wurly 200, which I believe the 200's came in different colours. Thanks for the other info as well. Medeski is a huge inspiration to me. A100's are amazing, I own both a 1964 A100 and a 1959 B3. If find the A100 has more character and a better sounding scanner vibrato than the B3, which has a lot of bottom end.
Is he legit the best organ player thats ever lived? I am sure there's people in the same realm but goddamn, the sounds he gets outta there make me feel like I'm on really good drugs. so enjoyable
I th9nk it’s not even close. There are players with more tile fingers, like Cory Henry, but for overall organ command and taste, medeski is next level.
Not just organ, his acoustic piano on Tonic, and his Rhodes on everything are amazing. He's definitely in the top 3 if not best of all time keyboard players.
So glad I was there!! I actually missed the first few minutes because the McCoy Tyner Quartet was at the smaller stage ending their set just as MMW began.
47:45 FUNKIN; A! At first I didn't get how the people weren't loosing their shit, at this point, but then I realized that their souls must have been transcended to a higher plane of funk!
These guys are truly artists and anyone who considers this a "jam band" doesn't have a clue about music. And, for the guy who said improvising is easy, you obviously don't know what true improvisation is! The ability to spontaneously create music with other people and be able to sync groove, harmony and and space requires mastery of one's instrument and perception of time! What I am hearing hear is pure magic created by three minds in a separate dimension of their own, connected by auditory stimuli and telepathic communication. Maybe the guy that thinks this is a waste of time should stick to listening to Katy Perry and AC/DC
Oh, improvisation is definitely difficult, and these guys are no joke when it comes to jazz fusion, but I still don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to call them a jam band. They do long extensive jams of songs like most jam bands do, just cause they’re a jam band doesn’t make em bad
And they’re p big on the jam band circuit. Benevento/Russo Duo, too. They attract a lot of heads to not be considered a jam band. And you make it sound like jam bands arent talented. Phish in the 90s is the most talented band in the universe.
"Its a fusion of jazz and funk, it's called junk!" Jam band or not. It's about the fun. You might hear something magical in the moment that you wont nessisarlily hear in the studio.
Funny, that's a phrase I see applied to Michael Brecker a lot. There are a couple of Brecker videos from this same stage on TH-cam, and he's shredding heavy and living up to his reputation. MM&W are...less overtly beastly :) "Snake mode" comes to mind. Or just "grease mode".
I've never liked the organ in jazz, but this playing by John Medeski is close to my heart. He uses the sound of the organ the way I like it. John is a special craftsman
Billy Martin has that IDGAF attitude behind the kit while at the same time being as serious as a heart attack with every single note he plays.
Billy Rocks.
man this is fucking rediculously good

Chris Wood is so underrated as a bassist!
Chris Wood is the best bassist in the world! I not mean he is not underratted. He is also play with the Wood brothers.
I normaly scoff at such platitudes but he really is one of the best of all time no doubt.
He's definitely up there.
He Always has been,
Entire group is underrated. They are quite literally the sickest jazz trio in the last 20 years. Don’t @ me
Listen to Medeski on the Hammond for 5 seconds and you know he's a master.
He IS.
I’m late to the party, just now learning about jazz and jazz fusion. I feel like an entire universe of music just opened up for me!
Wow, they quickly entered top 5 bands of all time after the first 15 minutes of this. True improvisation at its absolute finest. Groovy, always musical, adventurous. *chefs kiss*
amazing bass, amazing keys, amazing drums.. just...amazing.
Ain't nobody else doing THIS here...try to remember Each one of these guys is a WORLD CLASS EXPERT at what they're doing
So many good MMW sets in 05. Chris Wood is just lethal with those slowly oscillating bassline patterns.
Love Chris's drop at 6:00. Superfunknatious.
A Keyboardist & Drummer like that is one in a lifetime! (not to mention the Holy Grail Bass groove play!) Who needs a Guitar player? Haha!
Try telling Schofield...
@@Badgerwurst Schofield's collaborations with MMW have always felt meh to me. I prefer when they have horns, strings, or DJ's.

these guys are amazing
This video is remarkably crisp for 2005
These guys are awesome...just a great balance of energy, creativity, and melody that never leaves you bored!
Billy Martin is my favorite drummer all time. So tasty and so groovy.
The best jazz players were either bullied or never been in a fight in their lives. That's free in every bone. Love this
Absolutely superb.
Excellent concert!! I've watched this several times. I saw them at First Avenue in Minneapolis the same year. Love them soooo much.
A guy gave me a live cd of theirs way back , and have been hooked since.

These guys got me through a painful divorce and the shite show we’ve seen this past year.
I'm not ordinarily much of a fan of jazz, but these guys are red hot.
When I saw those keyboards stacked up, I knew this was going to be great! :-D
wood goes into his funk at like 26 minutes. martin joins in, then medeski sits down at the steinway, and it just gets real.
Greasy AF
Best band for 2020 real jazz
That groove 17 minutes in. Chefs kiss 😘
What a great concert !!! I wish I'd been there !
How dare 4 get how amazing these guys are and always & 4 ever Will be 🌹⚡️

The Jimi Hendrix of the keys. Hears cosmic sounds in his dreams and sets about making them a reality.

I love the half eaten bell on the ride cymbal. I can hear the sizzling though. Amazing.

Incredible recording - by all means
Still total kick-ass jam many years later

Magnifficent, funtaastic!
I would love to know what Chris Wood has on his pedal board. Best bass tones ever!!!!!!
perfect how these are playing
21:32 - Chris knows Medeski's going to hit that chord twice. Holds back and hits it with him. Hoooo doggy.

not many bands play like this the best please play some shows east coast haven't seen you guy s for a while
At the beginning, they send a signal that they are avant-garde with a bit of weirdness.... Prepare yourself for something. You won't be disappointed.
