When you don't know who you love more in a trio : The bassist, the keys or the drummer you KNOW you hit paydirt.

Wow...20 years to the month that I recorded this show and I stumble across it on TH-cam! Low generation copy that still looks pretty good too...I made several 8mm master>VHS copies for friends and this is possibly 2nd gen.
No image stabilization on this Sony Handi-Cam so I had a little bar that attached to the camera which rested on my chest. I probably used the stealthy Sonics microphones to help the audio not distort from being on the front row.
Great show and memories....I was introduced to my wife before the show but I don't really remember as my friends and I were getting all our recoding gear set up!

Is it possible to get this in a better image quality? MMW literally saved my life when I thought I was going to die. I thin this concert is the best I have seen to date. I am sure I have watched it over 60 times by now. I thank you for recording this and am so happy you are still allowing someone else to share this. It would mean so much if I were able to get a better version of it. This is so important that I will give you my email publicly. realiteedesigns@gmail.com

Lance, are you the guy who used to set up at the White Rabbit and Mercury all the time? I'm dying to get some old recordings of local Austin bands from the mid-late 90's. Pura Vida, Tunji, etc.

This was an amazing show and I vaguely remember seeing the recording equipment set up by the back riser, but I never got close enough to the front to see you up there.

Saw this show and the Trey Anastasio sit-in about 6 months earlier. Austin attracted a lot of grea5 bands to small venues like Liberty Lunch and Emo’s etc.

Thanks for uploading this. I first saw them a few months later at Tipitina's in New Orleans with a then-unknown Galactic opening. It remains to this day the best club show I've ever seen. They played for over two hours and kept the energy level off the charts. Tim Green (from Michael Ray's Cosmic Krewe) sat in on tenor sax and just absolutely wailed. Anyway, this video brings back memories of that show. Thanks again.

I don't know if I would have been musically mature enough in '96 to appreciate MMW and this show, but damn, I wish that I had known about them at that point. Fast forward 4 - 5 years and I was in love at first listen.

  • @jesusonazareth4752

Wow, what a treasure this show is. An epic "Is There Anybody Here That Loves My Jesus" (which starts at 22:58 or so). Thanks so much to Lance Lester (and helpers?) for filming this originally, and to Alexsh for posting this here. And of course the most thanks to MM&W for being such badasses and sharing their music with us. "Dracula" starts around 34:26, another classic early groove. "The Lover" starts around 45:25, and the Doc Pomus tune "Lonely Avenue" (made famous by Ray Charles) starts around 56:30. "Macha" from the Bubblehouse ep is at 1:12:31. "Think" is at 1:36:00.

Medeski has the straightest back, helps him stay balanced, and that's probably why he can do all the cool stuff he does. What a boss.

Also, having enormous hands is a plus. I once shook hands with Robert Parish, 7'0 ft tall. I have been lucky enough to shake jm's hand. Both, completely wrapped around my hand during the handshake. Jm, pbly is pushing 5'9. And, I am 6'5 w huge hands. Additionally, medeski's super genius doesn't hurt his performance.

Medeski is really one of the few guys who have truly gone beyond the late 60s jazz piano voicings. He does very unconventional poly-harmonies occasionally, but his overall phrasing is so good, it really isn’t that weird. But of course most of his voicings are either conventional jazz voicings, bluesy rock, boogie, or sometimes gospel voicings.

mostly playing larger "clubs" at this point. around the time that Phish started playing the Friday Afternoon album before shows and they started blowing up (some people complain about this, but it grew the fan base and allowed them to play bigger venues). in NYC they would have been playing Knitting Factory, I think a nice run at Bowery Ballroom in 96, then on to Tonic when Knit closed down. Those were the days! 3-4 night runs of MMW in NYC are some of my fav music memories. This "era" is the shit.
