I have a funny connection with this piece. This was commissioned for my retiring band director, Mrs. Debbie Durham by my high school. Hazo actually came to our school and I had the rare opportunity to meet him (he is great!) and hear the premiere of this work at my school. She was the best teacher that I had; she was an inspiration to me. She retired this year, the same year I graduated. Now I'm college and I miss her quite a bit. I'm glad that Hazo's publisher got this recording uploaded to TH-cam. A fine selection for a concert!
It is a beautiful piece. As a trumpet player, it is absolutely awe-inspiring to hear the other parts being played from the rest measures we get. It is a breathtaking experience.
Matt Thompson I can tell you this you are correct it does seem like it should be a grade 4 and I can tell you I'm super excited because we are playing this at my last school concert and I really super excited because I get to play the chimes
Wait... Is this for real? I hear (albeit very slow) the English Folk Song Suite by Ralph Vaughan Williams from 1:08? Like, the exact thing (from its first movement). It feels like I found an easter egg but in music lol
Samuel Hazo was inspired by Vaughan Williams original English Folk Song Suite. It's a kind of re-imagining of the 1st movt. It's SO beautiful. He knows where all the good notes are in the clarinet, that's for sure.
We are playing this piece in my school band and it sounds great except for the brass our brass section is not good at playing soft slow pretty songs like this
I have listened to this I don't know how many times and just now realized it is the tune of Seventeen Come Sunday.

great story
Pretty sure you're a band director, only band directors have such interesting stories.

This song literally evokes so much emotion when I listen to it. I played it last year (sophomore) and this just giving me flashbacks to great memories
Sir Hazo is such a wonderful man! His musics are unlike any other, they give such a beautiful eerie and light yet powerful vibe.
Omg!! This is such a pretty song. I wanna order it so my band can play it as an end of the year piece
nerd
Satans Pal -.-
Satans Pal takes one to know one Charlito Tolentino
It is a little hard when 2 people in your percussions section can't keep time worth crap....then again it is a high school band in a smallish town
How beautiful! That key change is everything. Seems more like a Grade 4, however...

This song at some points really resembles English Folk Song Suite and I cant describe how neat I think that is
I mean... That is straight up what it is lol
I found the music sheet at my school in the trash and learned how to read music to hear how it sounds. I should've just looked it up on youtube.
I'm playing this song for UIL👍soo much breath taking but it's worth it👍
I wish there was 'gorgeous' button
My section (low brass (trombone)) played it by ourselves, and it’s so beautiful!!!
same!

Oh wait no, it's just that both composers drew from the same folksong for inspiration haha XD
Hikari Tanaka AH I thought I was the only one who noticed that!!
Hikari Tanaka music is wild
Hikari Tanaka I said the same thing. That's English Folksong Suite

The title of the song is actually Seventeen Come Sunday, but this is a really nice piece :)
Lol why did I write this Sam Hazo can call his arrangement whatever he wants
Beautiful piece. Definitely something that should be on repertoire lists for HS band competition.
Oh, vaya, hace tiempo que no escuchaba esta gran obra :''D
Grade twelves played Seventeen come Sunday for winter and grade elevens are playing this for summer
Actually,Does Hazo love to put his own theme(Or particular, recognizable ostinato) to his pieces?
XD
