Hooking Up A 100LB Propane Tank to Your Travel Trailer

  • A lot of full time RVers work seasonal jobs and stay in a private campground or park for months at a time. It's a lot easier to have a big propane tank to use than continuing to refill the small tanks. There aren't many videos to explain how to hook up a big tank to your RV, so hopefully you will find this one valuable and informative. Thank you so much for watching.

    Very helpful. I really appreciate you calling out the fitting names and sizes. The concept is easy but devil is in the details and that really helps get the correct parts. Cheers!!

    Thank you for this. Someone just offered me four filled 100 lb tanks and I wasn’t sure if I should accept them. I live off grid in my trailer so you’ve put my mind at rest that they can work without major ordeal on my rv. Thank you. God bless you.

    This is the only place I could find to ask.. I'm living in a camper with my girlfriend to save up some money and forget about rent.. How realistic is it to power a full-sized refrigerator/freezer along with the outlets, small appliances solely off of propane? We won't have access to an electric hookup and solar ain't cheap.. Probably won't use the furnace much as we have a small wood stove and can use a space heater.. How long could one 100lb tank last? Would much rather get propane refills than to run a several thousand dollar electric hookup. Sorry for the rambling. Thank you for the video!

      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They do make generators that run on propane, they would be costly to run long term. In our camper we have a 6 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer, that runs on electric or propane. The hot water runs on electric or propane. The stove and furnace are just propane. We have used up a 100lb tank in a week and a half, and have had it last 4 months. Just depends on how cold it is. We usually get a month out of the 100lb tank when boonedocking, just using the propane appliances listed above. To power any 120 volt outlets or even the 12 volt system long term your cheapest option would be a solar system. It's costly upfront but pays long term. You can do a small solar system with inverter for about the cost of a generator. Of course the smaller system would require more effort on keeping things unplugged or turned off and possibly just using what's absolutely necessary. The first few months in a camper will be a challenge regardless. I would say just go for it, figure out what you really need vs what you think you need. If your camper will be stationary for months, a 100lb tank is a time saving option. You do have to get it filled, sometimes you can get a gas company to come to you and fill it. I usually have to take it myself, they are actually 170 pounds in weight when full.

    Is a special regulator not required for the 100 lb tank? Like a 2 stage regulator?

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, the factory regulator works just fine. By design a full tank should only be 80% full, allowing room for gas expansion. The internal pressure of a 100lb tank would be the same as a smaller tank. The automatic changeover function will still work as well.

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could do that with a POL to QCC1 splitter tee on the factory tank. Then just get a hose to run from the big tank to the tee. I isolate the one small tank to prevent fully running out of propane before I can get the others refilled.

  • @mikediamond353

    Hey! I still have my hundred pounds tank, but the gas station took their propane tank away. Now I can't find anyplace that will fill it. Too old. Can I recertification this one?

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should be able to get your old tank recertified if it's not damaged or badly rusted. I would call your local gas company, or a welding supply shop in your area. They should be able to recertify it, or tell you who to call that will.

    I just bought a 21 ft travel trailer (hideout) how long will a 40 lb tank last fot heat? i have never had a rv before need advice

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It all depends on how long you run the heat. If it's really cold and you run it on about 68, it might last 3 weeks to a month, maybe a little less. That's the one downside about a propane furnace. It really sucks propane up. If you are comfortable with a lower temp, it'll last longer. We supplement our heat with a small space heater when it's not super cold. This is our 4th year full time. We still have lots to learn still but we'll be glad to help any way we can.

      would it be safe if your using a external 100 lb tank to use the stock pressure regulator that the travel trailer came with? i would just use the hose with the pol fitting and run that straight in to the pressure regulator that trailer came with

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I'm using the factory regulator. I only changed one rubber gas hose out for a longer one and added the POL adapter. All propane tanks are the same pressure regardless of the tank size.

    I just hooked my 100 pound tank up for the first time this winter and it sounds like it’s leaking out where the hose goes in to the tank .

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ours leaks sometimes if I over tighten the hose. If the connection is too tight it will bind up the rubber o-ring and allow gas to seep by it. A snug fit is all that's needed. Try loosening it slightly and see if the leak stops. Use a soapy water solution, or store bought gas leak solution to check for leaks.

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The fitting between the tank and hose? It's called a POL to QCC1 type 1 adapter, I got it from Amazon.com.

    • @nhanzdelossantos3134
      @nhanzdelossantos3134 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would be better off to buy a hose with a standard left hand fitting going directly into the 100 pound tank, then you do not need the adapter and that would eliminate any low pressure issue.

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You may be correct, there are several ways to make this connection. A benifit of the adapter is it is a tool free connection. We have been using this setup for 4 years now and have not had any pressure issues, yet. Thanks for commenting.

    • @nhanzdelossantos3134
      @nhanzdelossantos3134 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@southeasternrvlivingandout4539 If you want it tool free it would be worth the investment. A question, I'm having a problem with my hot water heater on propane, I think it is the suburban model. It lights initially then after shutting off the next time it tries to come on you hear an explosion and it does not light. I just blew it out with air and cleaned everything and it did it again. Starting to sound like the igniter is failing, do you know anything about this?

    • @southeasternrvlivingandout4539
      @southeasternrvlivingandout4539  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would check the ignitor ground, maybe even run a second ground connection. Also check the ignitor tip for buildup and or misalignment. The expansion of metal after the first successful burn could be just enough to effect a poor ground or the air gap on the ignitor tip. If the problem persist then replace the ignitor. They typically only need to be replaced when they have cracked ceramic or a tip worn down from long term use. A piece of steel wool works good for cleaning ground connections and dirty ignitor tips.

      200,000 BTU. It has to be rated high enough to supply propane for the hot water, furnace, stove/oven, and fridge. QCC-1 fittings come in black, dark green, light green, and red. Most travel trailers that I've seen use the dark green.
