RV How-To: Propane Tank Upgrade

- We've been wanting to upgrade our two LP tanks on our Kodiak RV and finally got that taken care of. We went from the stock 20 lb tanks to two 30 lb tanks. This was a simple and easy modification that only needed the purchase of a longer piece of 1/2" all-thread rod to use to clamp the tables to the rack. The added LP will give us longer use in between refills and should provide plenty of service time during those dry camps and when camping in cold climates.

Hey Adam...another great "how to" video. As Steve and Drones mentioned below, if you turn your tanks 180* it will give you better access to the tank valves. If you keep your tanks in the current position you might consider turning the cover 180* and you could reach in thru the back to access your tank valves w/o removing your UHMW piece. Just food for thought and I do enjoy ALL the videos you and Abbie put out for our enjoyment.

Yessiree...the least of the LP consumers would be the refrigerator and then the stove. Water heaters next then the house heater. Back in the early days of our camps with the older RV's, the house heater would draw enough LP to wipe out a tank of in just 2 nights.

Looking good. During our travels as project manager for Coke-Cola, we spent a year in Denver CO, Flint MI, and Twinsburg OH in our HitchHicker 5th wheel. Can never have to much propane :-) . Have fun on the trip, and ole Bears doors will be open when passing thru TX, 👍👍
I'm surprised you didn't turn and single point a rod with just thread on each end 😁 Have you considered a 12 volt compressor fridge? Some solar upgrades and lithium battery too?

I bought a gas stop leak detector for the tanks and it found a leak. One of my propane hoses wasn’t leaking and I didn’t know it. Tought me a lesson, spray some soapy water on them more often and check! Now I have one on each tank and it will tell me and shut off the propane.

Switch the tanks side to side and you have a nice pad for the hold down, no scratched paint and rust on the hold down area of the tanks.

We just purchased propane tank monitor's that blue tooth to our smart phones to monitor the levels of LPG in our 5th wheel. The brand is MOPEKA Products and one of the kits (024-1000) includes 1 monitor and 2 sensors. You enjoy your travels and thanks for taking us along.

Adam have you seen the auto switch for twin bottles?
Do you have gauges on each tank to show the level of propane?
Or is that in the RV?
If we have electricity, we use an Edenpure to heat in the mornings and sometimes at night, but times when the winds coming off of Lake Michigan or Lake Superior will bone chill you it's nice to have the bigger tanks and I bought the 3rd one and stow it at times. Redundancy is the best way,

I converted a class c motorhome into my tow vehicle and keep the chassis mounted lp tank and the generator. Works great
Hey Adam great video mate would you drill through the clamp bar on one side of the nut to add a padlock for security particularly whilst you are free camping mate?
Most call them "threaded rod".
Machine guys term. All thread.
Use that cover due to shelf.
Now set up generator for LP.
Better yet, get a champion dual fuel.

I have my tanks turned forward, it's easier to get at the valves.
I Like the idea of carrying extra propane but, I would have to do my homework on Hazardous Material Tunnel Restrictions.

You could also fit a LP conversion kit to your generator to save having to carry gas
What about turning the cover 180° so the zipper faces the trailer. It's better access and protects the zipper from road debris.
I had a problem with propane large wingnut loosening while on the road. I drilled a small hole on each side of the wingnut and dropped an eye bolt into one of the holes so that the Wnut won't go CCW.
Cotter pins and safety wire are a very good insurance on all fasteners that are critical. :)
Sometimes you need to also change the supply hose for a longer one because they are not long enough, usually a simple task to do but good thing to know before doing this mod.

What's the bracket/stand above the propane that is holding the generator who makes that?

Hmm, what does bother me a bit is the height of those new LP tanks. Can that bracket thing safely keep them upright & in place, on the bumpy road?

If it doesn't, that would be the next upgrade I personally would make. *I ABSOLUTELY LOVE* running generators and other small engines on propane or natural gas. It's so much nicer than liquid gas or diesel. The fuel never goes bad, it's very high octane (no pinging risk under maximum load), it's already in gaseous form so it doesn't need a carb or clean injector to atomize it and it also doesn't condense on cylinder walls and wash oil away when the engine is cold, it burns extremely cleanly, and many gas stations also have a propane filling station so you can get fuel at the same place.
You'll need to put a third axle on the poor old thing. :-)
Only bad thing you have to find a place to fill them instead of just exchange!
Most rv parks and campgrounds offer propane refilling. It’s not an issue.
You’re getting robbed if you exchange
Tons of gas stations here in Arizona have a huge propane tank off in the corner somewhere that they gladly use to fill barbeque tanks. Even some of the UHaul stores around here have a propane filling area. 🤷🏻♂️ Idk. Why give up your known good tank and get another that may or may not be iffy? Plus, it's not hard not expensive to get them refilled. Put them in the trunk or bed of the truck, drive over to the gas station, done.

Our old RV had something like an 80-100 lb propane tank underneath it. It was crazy.
I don't ever remember running out of propane even when running the furnace, stove, refrigerator, or water heater in the winter when camping.
As others have mentioned, when your in a camp ground hooked up to electric you can always run a small 1500W electric heater.
We love the channel and you two. I would like to see an Abom take on the Cuban sandwich. The kind where a pork loin is wrapped in a pork belly, tie the roll, cook, and sliced for the sandwich filling. I know there are lots of variations on the Cuban sandwich. I would like to see your tools and skill on the Abom version?

I got a propane heater for my garage (back before we were in single digits here in Atlanta). Clamps on a 20# tank. Drove me nuts because the internal threads on the tank valves are LEFT HAND! Nowhere in the instructions was that mentioned! 🤬
I believe that industry standard to have left hand threads on the LP has valve.
Its a LP tank thing. Notice the folks who refill your tanks....they turn those refill hoses on LEFT when attaching them hoses.
@@Garth2011 Um. So far I just take the MT back and exchange them. The OUTSIDE threads are RH. The INSIDE ones are LH. I also take a spring scale to weigh the fresh tanks to make sure they don't give me an MT by mistake!

Sometimes the water is already hot when you fire it up and therefore a hot water heater 😎

If the water is always hot, then you wouldn't need a water heater or a hot water heater. It's only when the water gets cold that the water heater will heat the water. Also, you will never see a manufacturer describe their water heaters as HOT water heaters.

120° is still hot to me, so you are indeed heating hot water to an even hotter temperature setpoint. 😋
