    Hi Pippi, great job, ---- one note, -- if your tank is out dated, just take it and turn it in on a refilled tank at Walmart or such,, they always have to have them upgraded to sell, and thanks for the hose hookup adapter,

  • @fillg
    @fillg 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Thanks for the info. Here's something else to consider, if you're using a 20 pound tank and it passes its certification date you can still trade it in at one of those tank exchange things like Blue Rhino or similar. They have all of the required equipment to recertify them in-house so it doesn't hurt them any. Pound for pound they're more expensive than getting a tank refilled since they only give you 15 pounds but it's a cheap way to get a tank with current certification.

    And for the sake of redundancy and for emergencies, keep a few MSR "Pocket Rocket" portable stoves as a backup.. They run off of the one pound Coleman propane tanks.. There are also other portable/camping stoves which are multi-fuel, which is practical, versatile, and a bit more flexible in emergencies..

    I think I would tie into the main propane line and split it off to have a separate connection for the little Dot tanks can be added on the fly. You would have to have a professional heating guy do this so know one blows up though......:) I think 5th wheels and others have a couple tanks on the tongue and there is a valve to switch from one the other so when one runs out the other is available. Well same for your RV have a switch to resort to the smaller tanks that are easier to fill.

  • @dmlewis3
    @dmlewis3 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very clear info there, Pippi. I believe someone may have mentioned that filling from the DOT tank will not empty the smaller one, but since you depicted cooking outdoors with it, that is clearly the way to make use of the remainder.

    Please only use, transport,or store propane tanks that are not designed to be horizontal in the vertical position. Where rubber gloves and goggles when working with propane. Propane evaporates or boils off at -44 degrees F. Frostbite is a danger.

    As you know so much that you know the DOT has change the float valve in most tanks to cut off at 80%. Old tanks without valve can not long be refilled as they are not safe.. Each state may also forgo some rules. If you use a old take it may be time to update it at your local Walmart or LTP store.

    • @jpenny
      @jpenny 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lankster Price The OPD mandate is not a DOT regulation, but a NFPA 58 rule on DOT type cylinders.
      It's important to note that stationary horizontal ASME style tanks mounted on recreational vehicles are not subject to the OPD rule.

    Can you give a link to amazon or someplace for that adapter hose to transfer from DOT tank to the RV tank? Great video I learned so much, thank you. ah i found your answer...There are two brands I've heard of. One is called the Extend-a-Stay and
    the other is called the Stay-Awhile. FYI, it doesn't actually refill
    your tank but in a way uses your tank as an extension of a hose or
    tube. Maybe you could add your answers to all the questions in your text under the video?

    Nicely produced and the warnings are nice. Trust me, propane can mess you up. In the 80/90s a "smart marketing department" decided to sell propane hibachi grills. Sadly, if the flame is hot and the gas goes out, when you open the lid, you catch on fire just like Michael Jackson. I lost my hair, eye brows and eye lashes. How did it happen? When I opened the lid, it was full of gas but the temp was higher than the ignition point. So poof, big flame.

    I've gone through the "T" fitting as shown in the video as well as dumping liquid via the acme fitting (the fitting with the yellow cap). To dump liquid propane into the main RV tank you have to hang the tank upside down and requires a different hose with a female acme fitting (about $40 which you can get at Westair or Praxair etc.)

      It's well worth it to have the portable tank setup even if you always fill the main tank the regular way. I think a lot of us have let the main tank run dry and now no worries with the supplemental tank.

  • @williamgates4399
    @williamgates4399 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    FYI, The 2001 edition of NFPA 58 (the LP-Gas Code) recognizes that horizontally oriented cylinders that were manufactured prior to October 1, 1998, are unable to be retrofitted with the OPD's. As a result of this fact, the Code now exempts these cylinders from having to be retrofit with OPD valves. Any such cylinder must have a label affixed to it to inform the user and the refiller that an OPD valve is not installed. ALL new cylinders manufactured after 1998 had the OPD valve so you can't over-fill 80 to 85%.

    Be careful plumbing an external tank into the high pressure side of the regulator. In extremely cold weather, oil can condense out of the gas and the liquid will plug up your regulator. Also when you disconnect the hose, that liquid will vaporize and shoot out of the hose like a fire extenguisher. Very dangerous! Cheers...Ken

    • @PippiPeterson
      @PippiPeterson  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ken Hanson Thanks for the input, Ken. There are a couple companies that package and sell the plumbing set up. I haven't yet heard of this but that certainly doesn't mean it can't happen.

    Rather interesting ... I do year round RV living in Canada.... usually 5 1/2 to 6 days to a 20Lb tank in summer. In winter it's about 3 1/2 days average per 20 lb. That runs two furnaces, stove, water heater and fridge.
    For -20 to -30C weather two furnaces are essential for two reasons, each has their own separate tank and thermostat, if you are away for the day and one quits or runs out - the other keeps everything from freezing, such as water lines. Second, usually the stock factory furnace is at the back or middle - the other end of the house is colder - having a second furnace installed at the opposite end makes it much easier to keep everything much warmer and neither works much then - cheaper on propane than one furnace running steady. I have 70F above inside in any weather. Another item to really consider is a tank warmer for winter, heat tape or electric blanket, it makes about a day more use difference in really cold weather and the tanks empty completely - in cold weather, sometimes the tank says empty but still has a couple pounds left. And last of all - add a double layer of plastic on all windows with about a half to an inch of air space in between layers - it makes a huge difference in having a much warmer house. Another good idea is using 12V computer fans to move warm air into tank compartments (I have water all winter), they take very little power, one battery will run 3 larger ones 8-10" for about 3 days nonstop.
    Costco generally has the best price on tank refills - quite a lot
    cheaper per pound than service stations, tank fills are generally less
    than $10 depending on location. They only fill to 80% but per pound the
    price is far better.

    • @PippiPeterson
      @PippiPeterson  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry S Your fridge helps you go through it quicker for sure. Plus it's much colder where you are than where I like to be. Great tip on Costco, I'm a new member so I'll keep that in mind!

    Never heard of a tank needing to be "purged". As your adding the the liquid propane it should push out the air via the bleeder valve that you have backed off. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure this is correct.

    The title of the video is HOW TO REFILL YOUR PROPANE TANK WITHOUT MOVING YOUR RV. The answer of course is to call a propane delivery company and see if they'll send someone out to fill your tank. It will probably cost an arm and a leg, but that's what the RV industry does, it over charges for everything. As for the rest of it, you might as well give a class for propane handling certification. When I hired on to deliver propane that's just about the same class we got, except for what to do when the tank blows up, how to avoid frost bite from the gas. An RV owner won't need to know that stuff, or doesn't really care. Your videos are popular because you are an attractive girl who takes care of herself physically and seems to be very knowledgeable (unless you are reading que cards) about RV living. There is no adapter or set up that will allow anyone to refill their tank from a portable tank because people are too careless and stupid and would put everyone in danger by trying something like that. Then there's the pressure equalization problem with the smaller tank. I've watched some of your videos and you appear to be a nice person trying to perform a public service and I'm sure you have thousands of drooling viewers when you show yourself in the pool, etc., it sure beats watching some old fat bald headed man instructing the viewers on something.

You just seem like a very naturally happy person which probably helps when living in an RV! I am curious how you make money though ..I look forward to your future 'living in an RV with kids' videos haha

    tl;dr; is propane tanks don't leak in the sun. This may come from people misunderstanding the liquid level gauge on their ASME tanks. When the tank warms up in the sun the LPG expands raising the liquid level. The liquid level in the tank drops as the tank cools back off due to using some propane, or ambient temperature dropping this often gives the impression that the tank is leaking. Additionally the float gauge is NOT to be used for filling the tank, EVER. Indeed a non-working float gauge doesn't necessarily make a tank unusable. The float gauge inspection is a visual only check for cracks or leaks. Some places may refuse to fill if the float is obviously inoperative as that could indicate further safety problems with the tank. DOT and ASME tanks are both generally filled based on the fixed level AKA maximum liquid level gauge AKA the bleed valve. For filling purposes a tank is considered full when liquid vapor is present at the bleed valve and I'll use the term bleed valve here since thats what most people understand it to be, but it's not entirely accurate, although bleeding excess pressure during filling is one of the purposes of the valve. The bleed valve is the only method for telling if an ASME tank is full often b/c it's either chassis mounted, or, impractically heavy to get up onto a scale! And the regulations and filling practices for ASME tanks reflect this fact. And since DOT tanks all went to OPD with the same bleed valve requirement, most stations now fill DOT tanks the same way and it's become accepted practice in the industry.
    If your tank is actually leaking in the sun it is over filled, has a bad overflow valve, or something else wrong. If your ASME or other float gauge is changing in the sun this is NORMAL. If you weigh the tank (scale has to be pretty accurate) you'll see the weight remains the same. It's simply the LPG liquid volume expanding and contracting with temperature. A DOT tank cannot be possibly certified for fill, use, or transport today. The regulation went into effect as far back as 2002, with some delays in some areas.
    An OPD valve with the triangular head and cannot be filled much over 80% - and at that point the bleed valve is going to be spewing a very impressive cloud of flammable LPG liquid thats vaporizing rapidly. The OPD float stops all propane flow on an overfilled tank except via the bleed valve! This is VERY important (I'll get back to that).
    Proper filling involves filling the tank until it vents LPG from the bleed valve. Weight SHOULD still be checked on DOT tanks and is the primary method to confirm you're not over, or under filled, however it's generally accepted to fill a DOT tank in the same was as an ASME tank, which is to fill until you get LPG out the bleed and immediately stop. Weight can maybe matter if it's really, brutally cold out when you fill and you expect to take it into 100F weather later before using any fuel. Indeed if you don't get liquid out the bleed port you've generally significantly under-filled. Most of your blue-rhino and similar exchange tanks are under filled and you pay more for them! This is why I always recommend getting your tank refilled rather than exchanging. DOT requires no more than 80% internal volume fill, and the bleed valve, along with the OPD, and storing them UPRIGHT ensures this. Even if you fill a tank near outside or in an area thats cooled to nearly -40F to 80% you should not experience any kind of overfill condition. Thats the reason for the 80% volume number is to allow for expansion in basically any condition and so you DON'T get LPG as a liquid but as a vapor out of the tank. Liquid can really screw up vapor regulators and appliances in general. The gas in the lines in our RVs etc isn't even measured in PSI, it's measured in inches of water column ~11 inches is normal, thats around 0.4 PSI. Even just a little bit of escaped liquid into the RV system (or a propane grill) could cause a major issue, and thats another reason for the OPD. Typical tank pressure is

    That built in tank lasts you 5 months in the winter while full time living in your RV? I have that same tank, don’t cook, have a super high efficiency on demand water heater and that same size tank lasts me 4-5 days. We bought two of the slightly larger (hard to find) tanks that hold about 8.6 gallons each and take them to refill every two weeks, I keep the built in tank filled but shut off for emergencies. The slightly larger tanks are easy to move when empty, but a little heavy when full unless you have a cart.

    Exchange propane stations should be used for emergencies only!!! The fuel burns yellow and is lower in quality than the LPG that is delivered by a reputable fuel company. Some of these refill exchange companies actually use old or purged fuel.
    My historical group(E Clampus Vitus) uses 50 tanks on a long weekend where we prepare 5 meals for over 600 people in the desert. The exchange tanks are the worst! I have seen this a dozen times. Also Miss Pippi, when you get a warm weekend you need to scrape that tank and shoot it with Rustoluem paint. Also, after a quick repaint, it is ok to shoot the exterior with WD 40 to keep salt air from causing rust. Parking and driving near the beach(like Pismo) is hard on motorhomes, soak the undercarriage with WD 40.

    Has the tank on your RV been certified lately? There is alot of rust on it. We would rather error on the side of caution, lest suffer the consequences. In other words, I don't want anything bad to happen to you. After all, the gas is stored under pressure and rust is a deterioration of the metal.
