Depending on the day, Pyramid Song is quite possibly my favorite song of all time. There is just such an ethereal and haunting beauty to it that overtakes me everytime I hear it.
This is literally one of my favorites off their entire discography, bc it has more growers than any of the rest of their albums. Each and every single song takes some time to deep into your brain, but man when it hits, ooof. I like how you’re saying you don’t understand why he says “I’m a reasonable man, get off my case”, bc that’s the same thought I had - and now for the past 3 years whenever I get annoyed at someone, that line pops up into my head almost subconsciously.
pakt like sardines is one of my favourite rh songs really. im sort of obsessed with the production on it..particularly the kick. they prolly just boosted some of the highs but since thats usually the opposite of what you tend to hear from an electronic kickdrum i guess it just stuck with me and it still tickles my brain everytime i hear it
honestly this album goes best as a counterpart with Kid A , most people call this a kid a b sides because they created these songs in the same session as the ones on Kid A. i will say they create a whole different vibe and atmosphere with it either way. The themes are very very similar though and thats why in 2021 they released a 20th anniversary ‘Kid A mnesia’. You’ll never be disappointed or dissatisfied with radiohead because the musicianship is always insane even if it doesn’t hold up to ok computer- in rainbows - kid a status
When he says "we are the dollars & cents we're gonna crack your little souls" it's a metaphor for the wealthy class and how much control they have over the "little souls" (us)
was at an ichiko aoba show last night and someone next to me told me this is their fave radiohead album to stir the pot but they were kinda valid for that icl
A lot of Thom’s lyrics on this album refer to class struggles/war, and disillusionment with capitalism (You and Whose Army?, Dollars and Cents, Like Spinning Plates)
No way you did this one that's sick!! As for the next Radiohead, definitely do hail to the thief. Other recs haven't really changed much! Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it In People LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
this album definitely grows on you and i think life in a glasshouse is one of the best album closers ever. you should definitely check out some grunge like in utero by nirvana or jar of flies by alice in chains because they are essentials.
Great review, thanks for doing this one! This is definitely my favorite Radiohead album, but the vibe is so dark, I have to be in the right mindset to give it a listen. This is definitely the band at their most experimental, and repeated listens reveal a lot more about these songs. Pyramid Song remains my favorite Radiohead song of all time. Would love to see your thoughts on The King of Limbs, which is another favorite of mine, and seems to be gaining some appreciation as the years go on.
Love Amnesiac's Morning Bell so much. I love that they put out two versions. Kid A's in 5/4 and Amnesiac's in 4/4. Kid A's version feels so stilted, off-kilter, and neurotic; while Amnesiac's version is so melancholy, while having that beautiful, uplifting outro with the synths and bass. Fun fact! Hunting Bears is in "Free-Time". No time signature at all, it just comes and goes, meandering in and out. It's a very classical music thing
Ok, kind of a werid suggestion, but a few years ago Radiohead released this virtual museum game thing called the Kid A Mnesia exhibition. It would probably take like 2 hours to explore fully and it has like remixed tracks, combined tracks, and visual sequences that are very impressive. I'd reccomend it just in general, but it could also be cool for a video.
Your reviews are amazing! I love your reaction style, you deserve way more views. Reccomendation: I HIGHLY reccomend M83's "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming". Very dreamy electronica album. You probably know the song "Midnight City" off of it.
Agree with M83, but I would start with dead cities, and Before the dawn heals us. Feel they are more compact whilst hurry up (although gorgeous) is a bit all over the place.
This is more of a mixed bag of an album but has a few of their strongest songs on there. You should check out Hail to the Thief next for Radiohead, it's the album that comes after this one too. Also are you going to do more Aphex Twin? I think you should do I Care Because You Do and then Come to Daddy. Also recommended Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern
when i first heard "pyramid song" as a pre-teen, I misheard the last part of that final lyric "and we all went to heaven in a little rowboat/there was nothing to fear, nothing to doubt" as "THERE WAS NOTHING THERE, NOTHING AT ALL". as someone that was raised Catholic and to believe in God and Heaven, being presented with the idea that after we die, there might just be no Heaven, no God, no dead relatives waiting, just NOTHING was and still is one of the most horrifying things I've ever thought of. Even if it's not what Thom sang, it sticks with me for that reason.
Im so used to only listening to live Radio head except for Ok computer but im just starting to hear their albums lately and most of their songs to me are better live also love to watch them perform its alot of fun for this album my favorites are Pyramid song ,Like spinning plates, knives out ,and two others i cant think up the names right now but those three are awesome to me ❤

One of the coolest things about Radiohead is how many great non-album tracks they have they could fill up 2 or 3 albums with great music they did not put on any albums.

I kinda like Amnesiac, I understand most people finding this their weakest album, but for me, I instantly got in to it. Yes, the album is inconsistent, and I feel like songs like hunting bears and pulk pull are a bit unnecessary, I think the rest of the songs are great, and hold op to Kid A standard. I do think the transitions work better then most people say, but it is noticeable and kinda ruins some of the experience. Its still an 8 for me.
For me it’s funny that amnesiac b-sides like kinetic, worrywort, fog, Trans-Atlantic are better than some amnesiac songs. They could make this album great and unique

I love this album. Like Spinning Plates is an absolutely insane song. I can't even imagine how many takes it took to make it.
The live version of it on I might be wrong really made me appreciate that song
Considering they just reversed something they'd already made and Thom added vocals to it, probably less time than you think
