Loaded is a masterpiece. Its probably their most underrated record and the last song from it - Oh! Sweet Nuthin' is my personal favourite song of theirs
Yes you have to do Loaded it’s probably my favorite “Sweet Jane” “Rock & Roll” “ Who loves the Sun” are classics and it’s more uptempo and melodic record overall
This album and Loaded are probably their most accessible albums. Loaded is also a very great album you definitely need to check out. Also Check out Lou Reed’s album Berlin. Probably his best, and a concept album.
Still hoping for Ghosts of the Great Highway to get the nod. Glad you’ve rounded out the essential Velvet Underground albums though! Strongly recommend you listen to the closet mix for future relistens.
you are the man a few recommendations: songs - Adrianne Lenker (folk, singer-songwriter) Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kil Moon (folk rock, singer-songwriter, alt-country) SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
So glad to see you doing more velvet underground! I really love hearing your opinions on albums, always a good watch/listen. Don't know if you are still taking recs from comments, but I highly recommend Alien Lanes by Guided by voices! 🤘
This is a concept album about self loathing, falling in love, getting your heart broken, redemption, healing, finding yourself again. Some Kinda love is about oral pleasure. Could be about addiction, love or both. I think Murder Mystery is about the chaos of the singles scene and the final track is about realizing the singles scene is not the right thing in the moment of Murder Mystery and finding that your solitude is really the right way to approach moving on.
My interpretation of im set free is that its not happy. The line “I'm set free to find a new illusion” suggests to me that the character has found freedom but is unsatisfied. It then leads into the confusion of murder mystery. This whole album is about paradox and I love how mysteriously complex it is. Recommend watching Joe Noses video on it
Day idk of suggesting: Tim Hecker - Virgins (Drone, Ambient) Clipping. - Visions of bodies being burned (Horrorcore, Industrial Hip Hop) Jane Remover - Frailty (Indietronica, Digicore, Hyperpop) Igorrr - Savage Sinusoid (Avant-Garde Metal, Breakcore, Baroque) Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy (Drill and Bass, Jazz Fusion) Oneohtrix Point Never - Garden of Delete (Electro-Industrial, Progressive Electronic) Machine Girl - WLFGRL (Hardcore Breaks, Footwork) 2814 - Birth of A New Day (Dreampunk, Basically Vaporwave without any samples)
Excited to see you cover blood on the tracks from Bob Dylan, considering what you liked about highway 61 it’ll be much more ur thing, the storytelling shines on that one imo
Hey Smags, during your reaction of Beach House's Bloom, you said at 9:00 you would do a Minecraft lets-play if the video got 300 likes. The video has 882 likes, yet for some reason I can't seem to find your Minecraft let's play (I would also accept a reaction/review of Hot Fuss from the Killers
Think I said this on yr last VU video, but you should check out ‘Paris 1919’ by John Cale. He was one of the original members of the velvets. It’s a really beautiful singer songwriter/baroque pop (kinda)concept album.
awesome recs: Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles (Sick sounding early 90s math/indie rock, awesome guitar tone) Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton (GORGEOUS unique sounding early 90s shoegaze, sounds like mbv, pavement, guided by voices with twee pop mixed in, so awesome, better than Loveless imo) Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Unique folk-punk, early 80s college/alt rock, very catchy) Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (Really catchy power pop, slightly shoegazey, same label as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) Quasi - Featuring "Birds" (Awesome Built to Spill-esque/Pacific Northwest indie rock, same label as Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Duster etc) The Breeders - Pod (Unique early 90s alt rock, Steve Albini prod, was in Kurt Cobain's top 3 albums of all time) Slint - Tweez (Sick late 80s post-hardcore/math rock, also Steve Albini prod) Pinback - Pinback (Very chill and creative late 90s indie rock) Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (Amazing album, basically as good as The Lonesome Crowded West) The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music) Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi) Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips) Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
Have you heard of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC), I think you might like them since you're enjoying the Velvets. Also Love and Rockets their Albums "Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven", "Express", "Earth Sun Moon". Solo works of Daniel Ash and David J (the singers/guitar players of Love and Rockets and Bauhaus). On the other side I would really like to hear what you think of Bauhaus "In the flat field", "Mask", "The sky's gone out", "Burning from the inside", Siouxsie and the Banshees, Mick Karn (bass player from Japan, same band where David Sylvian was the singer). David Sylvian "Dead bees on a cake"... Glad to see a young man appreciating many of the great albums you reviewed.
Sigur Rós - ( ) (best winter album there is) Kurt Vile - Bottle it in (singer songwriter, very creative and personal lyrics, good autumn listen) Chat Pile - Gods Country (heavier stuff, great album) Father John Misty - Pure Comedy (tied with kurt vile as my favourite singer songwriter) Jon Hopkins - Singularity (one of my fav electronic albums, also has classic piano parts, has worked a lot with Brian Eno for example) Sun Kil Moon - Benji (great singer song writer album)
Another goated review. my favourite of the velvet underground albums, incredibly singular in its time. im set free is one of the most emotionally potent songs ive ever heard. also you should listen to 'Wild is the Wind' by Nina Simone
Some recs: LITTLE BUSTERS and Happy Bivouac by The Pillows (they are both top tier j-rock/grunge albums) I recommend starting with LITTLE BUSTERS though. HIGHVISION and Three Out Change by Supercar (both are great j-rock albums. HIGHVISION is indietronica, and Three Out Change is shoegaze) Everything Will Be Alright In The End by Weezer (great comeback album for weezer with some of their best songs to date)
Hi! I recommend you listening to Oli XL "Rogue intruder, soul enhacer", i'm addicted. Some chill weird stuff, I mean just look at the cover art it's fucking amazing
Imma start spanning you now, But pleaseee react to The Hellp's sophomore Album "LL", I think you would enjoy it heavily, Their a electric pop duo and considered to be "Indie Sleaze". Please and thank you
After hours was genuinely 50 years ahead of its time. Sounds exactly like an indie 2010 band to me
I truly can not stand after hours, for me something the album could absolutely do without
Spiritualized definitely took a ton of cues from this album.
Thats i said amazing song timeless
and funnily enough the music video also looks like its from 2010.
@@thotheface the music video was made in 2015
"Thought of you as everything I had but couldn't keep" is BRUTAL
Loaded is a masterpiece. Its probably their most underrated record and the last song from it - Oh! Sweet Nuthin' is my personal favourite song of theirs

The female singer is Mo Tucker, the drummer
Check out Rain Dogs by Tom Waits if you haven’t heard it. His gravely voice alone makes him a legend let alone the album’s insanely unique sound.
This is a concept album about self loathing, falling in love, getting your heart broken, redemption, healing, finding yourself again. Some Kinda love is about oral pleasure. What Goes On and Pale Blue Eyes are all time classics.
After hours is so good. Glad you reviewed this one :)
