You should check out Joni's album Hejira. It's her other most acclaimed work and it mixes in a lot of jazzy influences and a more dreamy and layered production into her typical folk style
Thats her at her best imo. Her best songwriting. The musicianship is incredible on there. Jaco's bass playing is so subtle but my god does it add so much flavour.
Every time he posts a video about a 1960s-70s songwriter (which, unfortunately, isn’t often) I post a comment about how he should do a video on Songs of Leonard Cohen
This album might just be the peak of singer-songwriter music. Pure vulnerability and honesty, it's breathtaking. Also ditto to everyone saying to also listen to Hejira, very different but no less amazing
Thank you for your great reaction, David. I've always loved this album, but now you have explained the complete conceptual story of her life's experiences and the blues that came with it through an album of individual songs. Her Song Spell. A lost year in the life of Joni Mitchell, before she was famous.
When the late Kris Kristopherson heard “Blue,” he was so flattened by its emotional honesty, he said to Joni, “Jesus Christ, girl, keep something for yourself.”
bro is biollogicaly unable to miss fr btw you should check some of the lore behind this album, it really adds to the emotional experience of the music aswell as the lyrics and makes this album just way better, love your videos smaggie
thank you for your videos a few recommendations: songs - Adrianne Lenker (folk, singer-songwriter) Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kil Moon (folk rock, singer-songwriter, alt-country) SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Great reaction. One of the best albums ever, a masterpiece of songwriting! Two songs (My Old Man and River) were about her love affair with musician Graham Nash of the famous group Crosby, Stills & Nash fame who she hurt when she broke up with him and he was devasted; he wrote the songs "Our House' before the breakup and 'I Used to Be King" after the breakup. BTW 'old man' refers to a domestic partner or lover probably in a long-term relationship. Love can inspire such great song writing!
Although they don't have much in common musically, but my goodness, what they can do with their voices, I recommend you listen to one of Tori Amos' albums, like "Little Earthquakes" or "Under The Pink". I can also recommend two fantastic singer-songwriters from this era, Carole King (Tapestry) and Laury Nyro (any of her first five albums).
This is my humble first attempt at getting the honorable Smags to be the first youtuber of all time to react to the criminally underrated indie classic The wrens-The meadowlands
This album is always hovering in the periphery of my Top 10 by a hair's breadth. It's so poignant and descriptive and full of lovelorn ennui; even more than that, it's so personal and human. I hope you'll one day listen to another revealing and vulnerable folk album, the pinnacle of my top albums, _Ys_ by Joanna Newsom. I've stopped spamming it in your comments, as I don't want to be annoying, but I will remind you that you told another commenter about a year ago that the reaction to it would be coming soon. Smags never misses, and I hope you'll pull through for ol' Bealio here. Love you Smagsy-poo keep being THE sigma reactor of TH-cam.
You should check out Minor Threat’s First Two Seven Inches LP. These guys were absolute pioneers for hardcore punk, mfs managed to create an entire subculture with a 50 second song. Still some the punchiest, abrasive, and cathartic music to this day imo. I’ve been soying out over it all week
recs: Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles (Sick sounding early 90s math/indie rock, awesome guitar tone) Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton (GORGEOUS unique sounding early 90s shoegaze, sounds like mbv, pavement, guided by voices with twee pop mixed in, so awesome, better than Loveless imo) Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Unique folk-punk, early 80s college/alt rock, very catchy) Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (Really catchy power pop, slightly shoegazey, same label as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) Quasi - Featuring "Birds" (Awesome Built to Spill-esque/Pacific Northwest indie rock, same label as Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Duster etc) The Breeders - Pod (Unique early 90s alt rock, Steve Albini prod, was in Kurt Cobain's top 3 albums of all time) Slint - Tweez (Sick late 80s post-hardcore/math rock, also Steve Albini prod) Pinback - Pinback (Very chill and creative late 90s indie rock) Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (Amazing album, basically as good as The Lonesome Crowded West) The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music) Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi) Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips) Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
Hey Smags, during your reaction of Beach House's Bloom, you said at 9:00 you would do a Minecraft lets-play if the video got 300 likes. The video has 882 likes, yet for some reason I can't seem to find your Minecraft let's play (I would also accept a reaction/review of Hot Fuss from the Killers
Different time. It’s her voice, her guitar work, her lyrics, and I think she even scored most of the songs. You don’t find it very often these days if at all. Industrial music era. And I suppose now the AI music era, songs written by computers for miming singers.
wow u do Joni, love u so much man!!! u should definitely go check out Linda Perhacs' album Parallelograms ,one of the best folk album in 70s , she is not that famous as Joni , but u will gonna love her
Some recs: LITTLE BUSTERS and Happy Bivouac by The Pillows (they are both top tier j-rock/grunge albums) I recommend starting with LITTLE BUSTERS though. HIGHVISION and Three Out Change by Supercar (both are great j-rock albums. HIGHVISION is indietronica, and Three Out Change is shoegaze) Everything Will Be Alright In The End by Weezer (great comeback album for weezer with some of their best songs to date)
You should check out some CAKE. They have something new coming out soon. Recommendation for Prolonging the Magic as my favorite but Fashion Nugget is also classic. Comfort Eagle and Motorcade of Generosity are also dope.
_Blue_ is a defining album of 1971 & often recognized as Joni's masterpiece - it isn't. Joni has *several* masterpieces (better than _Blue,_ imo). You wanna hit: • _The Hissing Of Summer Lawns_ (1975) 👑 • _Hejira_ (1975) • _Court & Spark_ (1974) • _Song To A Seagull_ (1968) • _Dog Eat Dog_ (1985) • _Chalk In A Rain Storm_ (1988)
Request from gen alpha girll could react to my fav Bowie album ‘the man who sold the world’ (1970) my opinion I think it’s one of the best classic/blues rock albums everrr only problem for some it’s too dark and creepy sounding but idkk I diggg
You should try Sam Phillips - Cruel Inventions, Cat Power - The Greatest, Beth Orton - Trailer Park, Shawn Colvin - Steady On, Innocence Mission - Umbrella.
You should do Dog Eat Dog next, to experience how different two albums by one artist can sound. And more female artists too - Kate Bush, Suzanne Vega, P J Harvey for instance
@@justsomejusstsome8994 Jaco 😍
Baby steps! It’s an evolution. I’m just happy that Blue is his introduction to Joni.
Great, smart reaction.
if we’re doing joni and bob dylan, songs of leonard cohen has to be next
Been saying this
Every time he posts a video about a 1960s-70s songwriter (which, unfortunately, isn’t often) I post a comment about how he should do a video on Songs of Leonard Cohen

Hejira is miles beyond Blue in my opinion... her writing just got better with age
Thank you for your great reaction, David. If you liked to check out some more 70' poppy absolute jams by a female artist, you could save Carole King - Tapestry. Such a classic.
actually clicked on this video at the speed of light holy shit
her hissing of summer lawns and hejira albums is so amazing!
LETS GOOOOOOO IVE BEEN ASKING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
thank you for your videos

Songs!!!!!!
YES, personal fave of mine even though it’s not at all my kind of music. So genuine and incredibly beautiful.
bro did my two favourite albums back to back, what a time to be alive!
INCREDIBLE artist and an INCREDIBLE album. One of my biggest influences.
LITERALLY THE DAY I LISTENED TO IT FOR THE FIRST TIME WHAT
check out Michigan by Sufjan Stevens, esp now that colder weather is coming up. very fitting album for fall and winter.
Really like this channel you’re so varied in your reactions.. my recommendation for more Joni is her Court and Spark (1974) album more jazz influenced
Great reaction. One of the best albums ever, a masterpiece of songwriting! omg yessss
Yes!!! Keep commenting this. I need to see someone react to Mark Linkous
She's still my favorite singer-songwriter of all-time. Back in the day "my old man" and "daddy" referred to a love interest/boyfriend/husband. : )
This is my humble first attempt at getting the honorable Smags to be the first youtuber of all time to react to the criminally underrated indie classic The wrens-The meadowlands
goated album and goated reactor
This is the best day of my life, thanks smaggie

Good timing for this one, eternally relevant album
Little Green has to be one of the saddest songs ever made
The 21st century spiritual successor to this album is Joanna Newsom - Have One On Me (but you should probably check out Ys first 😉)
In the sixties, someone’s “old man” was a lover, not her father. A bit of 60s slang…
The world has changed so much.
Joni saved my life.
yes!!!!! so excited for this
I recommend Joni's The Hissing of Summer Lawns.
Such a great record!

Little Green had a very happy resolution in 1997 🙂
Case of You - Tears here, thinking of my gf in the 70's
I hope you can listen to Laura Marling. She is the closest contemporary artist to Joni Mitchell. Her best album is Song For Our Daughter
Seconded. 'Songs For Our Daughter' is a masterpiece. New one is great too.
@@aldo34 I love patterns in repeat too. It's only behind song for our daughter and once i was an eagle
adore this album
The cool thing about here is she uses alt tunings like crazy so she is not running her hands through chord forms.
You should check out supertramps album crime of the century! Its a great prog rock album
Thanks for listening to this. ❤
thank you!!
ooh maybe some suzanne vega next! i recommend 99.9 f, incredibly underrated album
The continuity in the album exists because the songs are about her life and lovers.
You would probably enjoy Ghosts of the Great Highway by Sun Kil Moon
