We had this experience recently with Hansa Teutonica - our first game was miserable scoring. Our second game was MUCH higher and we got in each other’s way and learned how to manipulate the board more.

I can believe it! Hansa Teutonica feels really open, so you have no idea what can happen or how to put moves together to get the most out of them. Experience is a huge factor to getting the most out of a game. -WEM
