This review was so authentic I zoned out for a moment and thought I was watching one of those Nintendo Power retro tapes from the 90s. Keep doing your thing.

This exactly! Was trying to put my finger on why this style seemed familiar and that's it exactly. Very nostalgic and what's (subconsciously) kept me watching. Fantastic videos and a great addition to the TH-cam retro reviewers. I also love that you review so many atypical games. :)

I bought M.U.S.H.A. The day it was released. I missed it. The thunder storm stage was my favorite. I was 20 when it came out. Now at 48 I found it again. Cost me a bunch, but well worth it!

I too found it at 48. Just in the year 2023. Hope you're still gaming and doing well. 😃

Musha Aleste is the best shooter ever made, imo. Even after all those years the music in this game is absolutely brilliant.

MUSHA really is worth the price of entry. It's such a beautifully balanced game and has ageless aesthetics and style. A good tip for beginners is to have your options set to 'reverse', power up the blue special weapons and put the ship speed up to 5. The section in Stage 4 or 5 where you first encounter a flying battleship at high speeds and the music switches up in tandem.. that's one of the rare moments in video games for me where the synergy between the elements of game, visuals and music bring on intense euphoria. This is only heightened by using headphones and cranking the volume right up. It's fucking *magical*.

MUSHA was amazing, one of my best purchases when it came out. The music is excellent and certain levels look fantastic; especially the level where you're fighting over chasm with the enemies coming up and falling back into the chasm after being defeated.

I really love shooters, Raiden for sega genesis was my first experience as a child. Now i really love arcade shooters like Dimahoo, Cyvern, Giga wing, Air Gallet, change air blade and many other classics (1944, 42, XX and galaga) Raiden Fighters Operation Hell Dive is really fun too. i also like side scrolling shooters too. Thanks for sharing!

This game was pretty obscure back in days. It came out when people were already getting tired of shmups, looked "weird" and had a weird name too. So, it went largely unnoticed. I had a chance to buy it for $20 a number of times, and didn't. Back when I got into Genesis emulation in the late 90's, I finally played it based on Internet advice and it quickly became on of my favorite Genesis games. Amazing graphics and sound, especially for an early Genesis game and plays great. Aged very gracefully. Compile definitely made some of the best shumps of all time, especially if you consider their entire body of work. Space Megaforce was one of my SNES favorites too.

There's something about this video and the comments that make me want to look deeper into developers who specialized in making shooters...
Also, that soundtrack... I'll still put on tracks from this game in the background while doing things around the apartment. The game was pretty fun too despite only playing it on an emulator before. Great review!

Hands down the best soundtrack of the 16-bit era! On TH-cam search for the soundtrack and find the song called "Noh Specter" fast forward to 3:20 and listen for about 25 seconds, it doesn't get any better than that

It reminded me of that Macross game (Scrambled Valkyrie) on Super Famicom which seems to be as chaotic, yet manageable like Musha is. If I remember correctly, you can play it in such a way that you can actually get enemy ships to join your side and fight for you. I've never heard of any other shmup do something like that. It's interesting.

    • @Cannotbetamed1

Brasel TheGamer Give it a try. It's a great game. If you like Compile's other games like Gun Nac, Space MegaForce, and to a lesser extent Guardian Legend, then MUSHA is a no brainer. It's one of the best and rarest games I own

Ohh, I am *so* jealous that you have a physical copy of this game. ^.^ That aside, great job on the review; I really love how you pick games that don't always get a lot of attention but are well worth playing.
You're totally right about the soundtrack, too. The Super NES gets the lion's share of attention when it comes to 16-bit music, but the Genesis had nice audio as well. M.U.S.H.A. was one of it's best.

I LOVED this game as a late teen. I had several import systems then. Like the Neo-Geo, Pc-engine duo...anyways for the duo was "Spriggan" which was very similar. Was that also made by the same developer? Spriggan Mk II, was amazing, as well but did not have the MUSHA feel to it. Amazing review.

Can i recommend some Genesis games, Maybe you have played some before - Haunting Starring Polterguy, Fire Shark ( For me the best shmup on Genesis), World Of Illusion, Mr Nutz, Predator 2, Aero Fighters, Crack Down, Buster's Hidden Treasure, Alien Soldier, The Chaos Engine. Hellfire is a personal favorite (preferably the Mega Drive version, it's harder than the PC Engine version (which is not necessarily a bad thing) but has better graphics, better sound effects and better gameplay (it even has some gameplay tweaks over the arcade original!). I also dig Truxton or Zero Wing.

I'm assuming that you used the Retron 5 to capture footage for this. Did you get the music straight from the game? When I play it on the Retron 5 the music sounds "off". Some of the sound channels are practically muted so that the music sounds flat, which annoys the hell outta me, cuz MUSHA's soundtrack is one of the best things about the game.
I noticed that you like your ship really slow. I thought I liked my ships slow! I also noticed that you really like the Free Roaming options. I prefer the 3-Way. The laser is also my favorite weapon. And I feel the opposite in regards to the myriad of weapons that most Compile shooters offer. Games like Gun-Nac, Blazing Lasers, Space Megaforce, etc, just have numbered weapons 1-8 and I always lose track of which weapons correspond to each number. But that's just me.
As a kid I actually had the Mega Drive version, Aleste, but now I have the American version. Other than text they are exactly the same. MUSHA is one of my all-time favorite shooters by far! It has a ton of nostalgic value for me, but I think it holds up really well and is the best shooter on the Genesis--even better than Thunder Force IV. Glad to see you give this game some love!

I did use the Retron. The intro and the beginning of the first stage (where you can hear the sound effects) are from that recording, then I switched to tracks I downloaded after that.
I didn't actually read the game manual until I was a good ways into the game, so all that time I was at speed 1... I didn't know I could pause the game and change it >.> And formation changes were accidental.

Your appreciation for these bullet hell tyype shooters is well received by me, because as much as I enjoy them, I was never very good at them. Having come to the Genesis late in its life cycle, I completely missed this game and if only I could turn back the clock and try it now. I agree with you on the music. The Genesis sound chip wasn't very good at all compared to the Super NES, but it's clear Compile got all they could out of it. Your insights and thoughts were cogent, and remind me again and again why I subscribe to this channel and am part of your Patreon.

Try Lightening Force - it's the side scrolling equivalent to this game
