I'm 29 and from India. I Loved this game back durning my schooldays ! Brings back so many memories of my childhood :D Me and my cousin bro used to play this skipping school all day long, Man I miss those times, The Era of Nintendo Games !
I’ve always liked Gun.Nac ever since I saw it on Nick Arcade back in the early 90s. I lucked into a copy of it at a local flea market for about $8 or so in 1996. It’s just the cartridge with maybe an ad, but I need to dig it out of storage one day and show it some love. It’s been too long since I played it last.
Just as previous review this review is also awesome and u explained the necessary points clearly. Yup I was the luckiest child in my neighborhood guys coz I've this game in 4 in 1 cartridge. I was a keen NES gamer and it was most difficult game in those days and I usually played this game on the Friday nights coz the next two days of the school had holidays on Saturday and Sunday and I was sooo blessed :) U've refreshed my childhood memories once again. :) Thank You !
The hidden stage "Area-0" could probably be considered a "warm-up stage"; it isn't really much of a power-up stage, since it only has 2 "P" items and one "F" bomb, but I like to start out with that stage as a way to get myself pumped up for the "real" game.
Another amazing scroller shooter on the Famicom/NES is "Summer Carnival '92: Recca". I haven't seen any other shooter quite like that one on that console, it's extremely fast-paced and has an overwhelming number of enemies at all times, and sometimes they can actually fly across the screen in large groups in like half a second - it's hard to believe that they managed to do something like that on the Famicom. And the soundtrack is pretty unique as well, it's an intense and hypnotic trance/techno sound with loud heavy bass, and sometimes the graphics will make psychedelic flashes and rhythmic distortions of the backgrounds during certain boss fights so that it almost feels like a disco or something. You should definitely check that one out, it's mind-blowing. Maybe not quite as good as "Gun Nac", but definitely a pretty unique experience.
There was a Europe exclusive Sega Master System game called Power Strike II, which runs on the same engine as this game. It is even more rare than this game.
Wow have never heard about this until today when you were talking about selling your video games (2023) and the gameplay on this is so insanely cool High level for an nes game
I bought the famicom version because it is much cheaper. I just realized that the mini boss in area 2 is censored in the US release. In the famicom version you're fighting a pack of cigarettes that shoots cigarettes at you. I was surprised to see tobacco in a Nintendo game so I had to look it up and sure enough the sprite was swapped for the NES. Now I want to play through both of them completely to see if there is any more censorship. 🤔
Kind of reminds me of Parodius given all the crazy crap you have to shoot. Also I can't quite pick it but is your intro music a from Parasite eve 2? Not directly, but the two do sound very similar.
A really, really good vertical shooter called 'Under Defeat' is one of the best shooters I've played. It's on the PSNetwork. You're an attack helicopter, which makes the game mechanics unique when shooting. Really difficult game though. I can't get past Stage 1-5. Play it, and you'll understand, but worth checking out if you love shooters. ...R-Type 'Dimensions' (an enhanced, modernized version of both R-Type and Super R-Type 2 arcade versions) is the best vertical shooter out. A cool feature allows you to transition from the original arcade graphics to the new, enhanced version. The games are identical to the content from the arcade, so you can change from retro vision to enhanced graphics without pausing the game.
you're almost correct that it does resemble Guardian Legend but you have to remember that even though some of the weapons DO resemble G.L they present themselves kinda differently but I do applaud your total attention to detail to this video.. keep up the good work!
If you like this one, try the earlier (and much cheaper) Zanac. They also made a lot of other great shooters on many platforms. Space Megaforce is one of my favorites.
New to the channel. Have noticed you have several rare games ( gun nac, snatcher etc). was wondering if you owned these or just borrowing for reviews. Secondly if you do own them have they been in your collection a long time or have to give inflated ebay prices? love the reviews! Sorry for the 3rd degree lol
+thespiralmatrix I owned them all. None have been in the collection for that long. I sadly sold all my original games a few years ago :( Almost nothing has come from eBay. They've all been from forums, stores or local trades. A number of the games (Flintstones, Panic Restaurant) have since been traded for other things. Still have Gun-Nac and Snatcher though.
+Cannot be Tamed Thats Awesome. I sold my collection years ago and since getting back into it have been more meticulous about games I own. Quality over quantity etc. Ive gotten some of the heavy hitters already such as Space Megaforce, R-Type 3 and Aero Fighters but Gun-Nac and Snatcher are definitely on my must own list. Sadly my area is fairly picked clean so re-sellers and ebay are almost my only options. If you haven't played it Id recommend Raiden Trad on the SNES. It gets globally panned for being inferior but the re-spawn system has always made me prefer it over the Genesis port.
If you're still looking into playing SEGACD, may I recommend Lunar: The Silver Star and Lunar: Eternal Blue. The Playstation got a couple remakes and it'd be interesting to compare the originals to them.
Cool. Review Space Megaforce for Super Nintendo...another game by Compile. This game was actually the sequel to Zanac which was released 5 years before this one.
saw this video through retroware (I post videos there as well). Anyway great video. I feel like Gun Nac gets overlooked. Keep up the great work, subscribed!
Although Konami made really good shooters during the 8-bit era, Compile, in my opninion, was the best 8bit shooter maker. They all look and play alike but I just love how they look and play. Too bad Aleste 2 never was released outside MSX. It`s my fav of them.
If you enjoyed this one check out Zanac on the NES, Space Megaforce (aka Super Aleste) on the SNES, Blazing Lazers on the Turbografx 16, and MUSHA on the Genesis. Most of those games are pretty expensive besides Zanac and blazing lazers, but they are available on the wii's VC.
Not sure if this is a game you'd be interested in, but I saw your video on MegaMan 2... thought it would be cool to see your thoughts on MegaMan X for the NES.
Gun nac is pretty easy, just save your power ups, i usually use the 🌙 looking power up that follow enemies. It is great to see i named this game on a previous comment, i can't say this is my fav famicom shooter since the famicom had Parodius also, it is great to see it was released on the NES, i own the famicom version, can't read japanese :(
Compile makes such great games. I only discovered Gun-Nac about 3-4 years ago and but it might be the best overall NES game i've played. A very solid game! Nice review! I recommend you review Xexyz for NES if you haven't done it yet :)
Cannot be Tamed It's top down vertical shooter like this but you play as a dragon. The power ups are cool , graphics and music wonderful. Not as much substance as gun-nac but it's pretty fun IMO.
You must really like shoot em up games. You have a really awesome taste for video games and I have seen your uptake on Guardian Legend and I'm sorry about the comment I posted on TH-cam and I hope you don't take any offense on it- I was just really excited about how you were saying that Guardian Legend was a rare gem of games and the way you were giving your opinion on GunNac and Guardian Legend made me think that you could've said a little bit more because those are really good and fun games to play and they really deserve 100% of the ratings that doesn't get rated and that's a shame.> Don't you think so too?
Hi! I'm Pam and I'm here to cram... a lot of useful information into this rather short video that provides sufficient insight into the game I'm reviewing without spoiling too much of it. Hmm, I see Tyrian (for DOS and GB) took inspiration from this quite possibly. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrian_(video_game)

Very well done review, I like your format a lot. Laid back, relaxed, yet very detailed and informative. Gun Nac is indeed a great shmup, it features surprisingly fast, manic gameplay for an NES shooter. It's enjoyably comical, slightly irreverent style is very reminiscent of the Parodius games and Hudson Soft's Star Parodia (spoofs the Star Soldier games and features Bomberman as an alternate fighter). I feel very fortunate to have gotten a copy of the game for only about $20 back in 2008.
I totally SUCK at these vertical shooter games. Actually, I suck at horizontal shooters too. Yet, I've never played any long enough to actually GET good.

Cannot be Tamed Oh for sure. I'd love to snag a copy of Snow Brothers if it was like $200 >_> heck even the Gameboy version is around $50! I know there's plenty of NES games like Little Samson and Panic Restaurant that cost a fortune these days.
@@ButteredToast32 It's been 3 years since your post, but Little Samson is now going for $900-$1k for the cart alone now! I bought Gun Nac when I worked at Toys R Us in '92. I sickeningly remember tossing the box and then losing the manual in a move. Ugh. The cart for Gun Nac is bringing $200 now and in the box $400+ You might try looking at flea markets or estate sales! I've gotten lucky there before. Best luck. ☺
Been looking for a copy for years. Stage 2 music is legit. Great review. For recommendations, while on the nes, crisis force was a great famicom shooter
Review games I can afford! Lol. I'm taking a fancy towards NES and Genesis shooters as my fav console (SNES) has mostly crap in regards to this genre. Sweet review! #WarOnCarrots
+CartridgeCanuck Thank you! I've noticed that the SNES doesn't have a lot - my bf just picked up Space Megaforce, but wasn't too impressed. I haven't tried it yet.
+Cannot be Tamed Hello! Could you make a video (if possible, of course) the game Tokkiu Shirey of nes, I'm a big fan of the game since boy.I love to see a its approach to this game! thank you. You are wonderfull!
These are the kinds of reviews you do that catch my interest most. I'd never heard of this game before I watched your review. And it looks like a precursor to the bullet hell genre that spawned some real classics. If the title screen didn't give it away, all the earmarks of a quirky Japanese title were everywhere. Like you, I think I'd have enjoyed it as well. Sadly the NES library was so massive, that many quality games fell under the radar of many games. This is clearly an excellent example of that.
I don't know why TH-cam unsubscribed me to you. Anywhoo, re-watched this video. Gun-Nac is one of my favorite NES games. I'm trying to find shooters I'd enjoy on its level, but I think only Star Parodia comes close. I have Zanac, the Cotton games, Truxton, Air Zonk, both Trouble Shooters, and so many other shooters, but Gun Nac is just one of a kind.
Cannot be Tamed the same developer made both? They are similar, but I don't think your secondary weapon powers up further if you collect the same number corresponding to your current weapon. I'll have to play it again. If you like shooters, and have a PS3/PS4 (I'm sure you do) 'Under Defeat' is one of the best vertical shooters out. The mechanics work very well, and your an attack helicopter, making the movement and aiming strange biut comfortable once you get use to it. Hard as hell though, like most good shootes.
Again great review, that girl in the weapon's shop is way too happy to selling deadly bombs. Oh and I recommend trying Life Force for the Nes or Keio for the Sega CD.
+Ryan AirZonkWorldChamp She is too happy, kind of remind me of the Battle Royale announcer girl. I will definitely try to Keio now that I know how to record Sega CD.
Is it just me, or is weapon 5 really bad most of the time? I feel like that weapon is much harder to use properly than the other weapons, largely because of the fact that it doesn't shoot right in front of you and also because of its slow and pulsating rate of fire.
It seems to me like the main advantage of weapon 5 is that it's quite powerful. I guess it's one of those weapons that should only be used when raw power is more important that anything else.
oh. before I make anymore TH-cam comments I know you've read my past comment about your G.L video comment and before you go ahead and make any judgement and critical remarks from the comment i wrote i just wanna say that.. please don't take anything I wrote seriously I was only defending my point of view from the game because even though you didn't say anything that was harsh or hurtful I has to speak about some things that really bothered me and I'm sorry if i came across as rude, that's just the way i am... I tend to get defensive to my favorite games and i get sensitive when i hear the slightest sound of displeasure for any TH-camr so before you read any of my comments.. please remember that I am only defending my favorite games> not being rude!!
I didn't think you were being rude. Though you really don't have to defend the game from me. This was a glowing review, and Gun-Nac is one of my favorite games as well. Compile reused some visuals and sounds from TGL, that's not "almost correct" that is correct. However, it is not a criticism either.
why would you go through the trouble of making that website? were you trying to humiliate someone or were you trying to intentionally get those hateful comments and then talk about it like you were trying to look innocent?! please be careful what you post about other peoples comments because you don't know if karma will turn around and bite you.
Hello, see if you can to this mode, play gun nac to very hard difficulty or difficult, I do not know which of the two there is, get 999.99.9 thousand points and get 100 lives and never lose and I will reward you with something very nice and that I will give you in your video, I mean in the comment box, when you have achieved it, the reward will be given after 7 days, you tell me how many days are left for the reward, A very special surprise awaits you - Miguel
Zanac's Power-up system and Game Play Mechanics Guardian Legend's Enemy Mechanics and Concepts Combined in a game that is appreciating in value due to strangeness of release. Gun-Nac is my favorite shooter games.
One of the favorite games-space shooters! I recently went to the refills with the bosses. Most like the weapon - boomerangs.

Thanks for the review because I saw this game and wasn't sure if I wanted but now I do
It's one of the few pricier ones that I think is totally worth it.
I have been playing this game with my son he loves this game and the soundtrack is amazing.
Nice

High level for an nes game
Just played this game for the first time last night and got through the bunny boss. I honestly think this is the most underrated game on the NES.
It’s a great game. I played it again today

Glad you liked it.
I haven't played Star Parodia, but I do like Hudson Soft.
This game is really similar to 'Zanac'. I thought Zanac was the Japanese version of Gun-Nac, but I think I'm wrong.
Two different games by the game developer.
Hard as hell though, like most good shootes.
nice shmup
looks like Zanac (nes)
+Isaac Ugalde González Yeah, it's by the same developer.
It becomes too tough and nearly unplayable from level 4. Too many things on the screen...
OMG a cute gamer (: Hi.
Awesome video, take this sub (:
Thanks!
Is it just me, or is weapon 5 really bad most of the time?
I feel like that weapon is much harder to use properly than the other weapons, largely because of the fact that it doesn't shoot right in front of you and also because of its slow and pulsating rate of fire.
Yeah, I generally tried to avoid 5.
It seems to me like the main advantage of weapon 5 is that it's quite powerful.
I guess it's one of those weapons that should only be used when raw power is more important that anything else.
Hot games from a hottie
oh. before I make anymore TH-cam comments I know you've read my past comment about your G.L video comment and before you go ahead and make any judgement and critical remarks from the comment i wrote i just wanna say that.. please don't take anything I wrote seriously I was only defending my point of view from the game because even though you didn't say anything that was harsh or hurtful I has to speak about some things that really bothered me and I'm sorry if i came across as rude, that's just the way i am...
It's up to 400 dollars these days..
Fascinating.

The evils of capitalism huh? Yeah those big companies that hire a LOT of people are wicked. Good video though!
I guess you think those big companies simply hire people out of kindness of their heart.
why would you go through the trouble of making that website? were you trying to humiliate someone or were you trying to intentionally get those hateful comments and then talk about it like you were trying to look innocent?! please be careful what you post about other peoples comments because you don't know if karma will turn around and bite you.
Hello, see if you can to this mode, play gun nac to very hard difficulty or difficult, I do not know which of the two there is, get 999.99.9 thousand points and get 100 lives and never lose and I will reward you with something very nice and that I will give you in your video, I mean in the comment box, when you have achieved it, the reward will be given after 7 days, you tell me how many days are left for the reward,
A very special surprise awaits you

Zanac's Power-up system and Game Play Mechanics
Guardian Legend's Enemy Mechanics and Concepts
Combined in a game that is appreciating in value due to strangeness of release.
Whimsicality of scratching of scalp strangeness of advertising Comparable to Domestic American Release of Phalnax for the Super Nintendo in VG MAG Advert' of Box Art of "Phar Out*" with Banjo Player or Gun Nac Dogfights Carrot Dart-Ships Head-On for your attention to be grabbed and allowance money spent.
I Should have bought this game when it was rentable at Blockbuster Video.
