During the Korean War, when the Greeks sent a large division, the Americans were amazed at how the Greeks were communicating with each other over long distances without radios. When the American general asked his soldiers how the Greeks managed to communicate without radios, one of his soldiers replied, 'By using their hands.'

Indeed, we greeks use much our hands to indicate and emphasize while talking. My father though, captain in trade navy, had said that he was impressed how much people in India were using their hands when talking.

What Italians are you talking about? There was no Italian division. I am referring to the battle of Outpost Harry, where the Greek forces pushed the Chinese away and secured the Songnae-dong village in South Korea.

@@sakisathan9176 Chill Saki! This is not a history channel on TH-cam. I make fun of things that might have been said or not. Italy was part of NATO but not a member of the United Nations (she joined on 14 Dec 1955). Italy sent its Italian Red Cross Hospital 68 in late 1951.
Regarding communication with gestures, we are not the only ones using them. In military tactics, there are multiple ways to bypass radio/phone communications. One way is to send Morse code with fingers or hand signals (depending on the distance).

You girls You are so funny you made me laugh very generously I am Greek who lives abroad and I never thought that I use so much my hands but I gave some thought I realized it is not just the hands it is our whole body that we use I wish we could meet for half an hour to explain and give all the tips I know with the right expressions to follow. I think it's all started from the need to communicate with people who could not speak. One example the shift of the shoulders that means as a response to a question "I don't know or i haven't got a clue " in English (because I don't know Scandinavian) when you want to make a question you change the order of the words in the sentence for example "There is "to "Is there ?" In Greek we don't do that in our grammar that's why we do that little drag at the end of the last word for example " eisai kala" to " eisai kalaa? or entaxi to entaxii?. You have a lovely accent and I enjoyed your video the only thing that I don't think you have got it wrong is that Greeks are not louder from Italian s for example or any other nation is up to every individual and if you hear Greeks sounds like they are fighting they probably do especially if they discuss politics. Have you ever seen a Greek couple on their honeymoon to talk loud to each other that would be a worrying thing. Anyway in Greece is rude to talk to someone loud and you will be asked to put your tone of the voice down. Lots of love from a Greek fan😊❤

"Tsou" is not rude among friends . it comes out naturally. If a server does it of course you would expect him to actually say no but it doesn't necessarily mean he's intentionally rude. And you are right, when you use the whole eyes-eybrows for the "no" movement it means "no and i am sorry ". It's apologetic. You were right about all expressions, you understand the culture now. I love this kind of videos.
What i think is missing in your greek life is a bit of history perspective. Googling only takes a few seconds and explains a lot of things you wonder about. For example if you googled "Averof" a few weeks ago in salamina you would realise why that road and that ship had the same name. History explains why every nation is the way it is .

Indeed if you don't know the person doing 'ts' to you then it can be a little rude. 'Ts' is mainly used between ppl aquainted with each other, it's when you disagree but you're too bored to say no, or when it's about something so definite and obvious that it doesn't even worth the effort of saying no.

    Hello!
    Great episode!
We have many gestures in Greece, of which some of the most common ones are bad, like the one you girls mentioned when you want to say someone is an @####e, the one with the five fingers wide open facing the other guy (this is known as the "medal of the wide open palm" and you can even say this phrase instead of doing the actual gesture, like "you won the medal of the wide open palm" -- a gesture or phrase which you should know by now it's a curse many people dont take lightly, though between friends it is 100% harmless) and the other when you twist the palm of your hand close to the side of your forehead which means that someone is insane, crazy.
And of course we have our own version of the "finger" which doesnt mean the exact same thing, but anyone will get the point regardless which country he comes from.
Thank you both for making this video,
    Regards

I'm glad you adorable girls find our ways of expressing, colourful and funny. It would be interesting
to comment on Cretan or Corfu dialects since they're very expressive ,witty ,with intonation and fun. In English "ts" with eyebrows rise is used and it means unbelievable; likewise in Greek if you use it repeatedly ( ts,ts,ts,...)

At 12:24 when you ask "where is the money?", except of the motion with head, eyes and eyebrows, you "must" also to raise both of your shoulders, in case to give emphasis that you don't have an idea!😁😊Nice try of you both girls, you are at the exact point! It was very amusing of spotting our body and face language in a video. We saw ourselves on a mirror, at motions we do every second without realising this! P.S. the hand gesture in 8:10 means “ a lot”, “out of the ordinary” but usually for negative things. So it depends on the context it can mean a lot of stupidity on the road (we understand that can be stupid drivers but this one is above acceptable stupidity :), or a lot of distance means you cant go easily there, or with a problem that is not easy to solve or an extraordinary hustle etc. keep up the good work girls ;)

The “tsk” sound in Greek means “no”, but it also means “I’m annoyed” if done with a rolling of the eyes and a semi-rotation of the head in one direction. In formal situations, when wanting to say “no”, the “tsk” should not be used. Like waiters shouldn’t be using “tsk”, but “όχι” if they want to say “no”. If they do it, they’re being lazy.
