Iâve been in the aquarium hobby for 40 years and I have watched thousands of TH-cam videos from thousands of channels and I can finally say that you are the best person I have ever heard explain the facts clearly and eloquently. I did subscribe to your channel and I look forward to binge watching all your precious videos.
Wow, I really appreciate that! Itâs definitely something I am intentional about and itâs helps tremendously to hear this feedback, thank you! Hope you enjoy the videos!
This plant works great for my outdoor pond, the thickness is just right for my guppies to go through, and the overgrowth coverage makes a large shaded spot for my guppies when the sun's out, for a small tank works well too, although you gotta do more frequent trims and uprooting, but thats the fun of it, definitely recommend it for beginners
Iâm new to the hobby, planning my third tank, a 40g tall bow front for pea puffers. Wonderful information, thank you!
Awesome!
I love Vallisneria especially when it runs wild in the tank!
Loved it in my 55 gallon. My water was hard, and it filled in half of my tank, Pearling constantly, but like you said, it took over quickly crowding out every other plant I liked. I finally pulled every bit of it out, and it still came back lol. Mine was corkscrew Val and turned brown when ends were trimmed. Too much upkeep for me.
Planning, expectations and your objective. You have them sorted it can work well. I planted val at just one end of a 4 ft tank and within a few months it completely covered the top of the tank and was running all over the tank. So now I've trimmed right back, planted all the extras along the back of the tank, now finally starting to enjoy it and the role it plays in the tank
It sounds beautiful!
I plant mine in terra cotta pots with gravel and root tabs. They don't escape that way and do great.
It's a great background plant to grow along the sides and back of a discus or angelfish tank if you can keep up with controlling it. I had a 80 gallon tank with it and it looked great. Then I added an apple snail, not knowing what it was. A couple weeks later I woke up one morning and found something had chewed off every single val at the base, overnight. The whole tank full! Learned about apple snails the hard way.
Yea I'm definitely a fan of val I have it in 4 different tanks
Right on!
I planted Val in my tall 40 G and I removed it because it grew way too fast and it took over the tank. Add to that I had to cut the length off even in a tall tank because it was blocking light. I much prefer tall crypts, hydrophilia, and bolbitis much better. They grow slower and donât take over like Val. They are also easy to grow. If I had a long big flowing river style tank, I might reconsider Val, but not in tanks smaller than 100 gallons. Someone also mentioned when you are thinning Val it tears up the substrate, this is so true because of all the runners it sends out. Just remember Val grows like an aggressive weed, the leaves grow super long (3 to 4 feet or longer) and it spreads fast.
Hello again from my fish room channel in Chicago! Vals require maintenance in all size tanks for the reasons you cite. One danger you flirted with is that when you do pull Vals during routine culling it can upset the substrate considerably releasing soil and toxins therein. I love Val but am vigilant with it even in my largest aquarium.
Releasing toxins? Please explain
@@plantlifeproject sure thing. Pulling plants like Val our causes upheaval in the substrate releasing anoxic bacteria that had been preserved under cap. This often causes ammonia spikes and other issues.
I keep a lot of houseplants growing out of my tanks. My water is very hard, but acidic out of the tap. Testing the established tanks, the parameters are great with the addition of some baking soda to keep it neutral, but the GH and KH are very high. Will Val or any other plant reduce that hardness?
This is my first time growing it. It has not really started to take off yet, I have 1 of six that has sent out a runner. I knew about their growth and the risk of them absorbing too much nutrients and limiting the growth of other plants... I am hoping to get it to create a decent "wall" along the back of my 10 gallon. The height of the jungle val is not a huge con for me as my fish seem to feel more secure with overhead growth... But I am going to try to keep it trimmed and limit its growth to areas I don't want it until the micro swords and moss have a chance to grow in. I have 2 Italian Vals that I am going to add to the tank just to give more of a transition and variance in color and appearance.
Can you corral it in one area with driftwood and rocks? âĪ
Yes you can! This will provide a border that lets you know where to trim the excess growth back to.
Is it good nitrates sucker?
Yes. Any fast growing plant will be feeding on NITROGEN in general. Nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia are all forms of nitrogen and will be utilized by plants. This is how they form new leaves and stems.
I loved seeing the big healthy specimens here. Mine always seems to melt away after a couple of weeks,, whether it is in sand or gravel ð Any tips or ideas why?
Is your water hard and alkaline? That is what they like. Nutrients rich substrate?
@@plantlifeproject ah that does make sense, unfortunately my water is the exact opposite (soft and more acidic)! Poor plants, no wonder they didnât do so good!
I love it
I have val in my Hi-Tech 40 breeder. It's like a weed.
Other plants can cause the same problems. Maintenance is always require in some way. I have not had much luck with Vallisneria in the past but I am giving a few different ones another try. I have soft water so that may have been one of the problems in the past.
This is true.
I got some for my 20H tank and I see if it grows in there. None of my plants survive in this tank. IDN why. We see what happens and if val grow
This is the cursed tank Nothing grow there Its. cursed
thank you so much for the infos.âĪ
You are so welcome!
