  • I quit making aquarium video, there will be no more aquarium related videoa in this channel. My new video will be like this:
    • Video
    This colorful planted aquarium without CO2 injection was set using the principle of The Walstad Method with some adjustment. If you want to learn more about this method, please consider to visit Diana Walstad’s website here:
    dianawalstad.com/
    And buy the book if necessary.
    All plants require CO2 to do photosynthesis. Our aquatic plants aren’t exception. Unfortunately, there are only a few CO2 in the water and most of the time this is the biggest limiting factor to grow submerged plants. That’s why we need a method to provide CO2 for our underwater plants. One of the method is to use soil under our substrate. The metabolism of organic matters in the soil by the bacteria will provide CO2 for our plants during early time after the tank was set. Then, we can add the organic matter in our tank with fish food.
    Soil can provide CO2 for our plants, but the CO2 supply will still be limited. So we also need to reduce our plants’ demand of CO2 by using moderate lighting. Lighting act as catalyst for photosynthesis. The higher light intensity, the more CO2 that our plants need. By using moderate but adequate lighting, we can grow more plants that people tend to believe. I have no complete data about the plants that can be grown in in this kind of planted aquarium set up, but in this video, there are at least 14 species of plants, which are:
    1 Ludwigia sp red
    2 Red lotus
    3 Hygrophila difformis
    4 Hygrophila polysperma ‘sunset’
    5 Red cabomba
    6 Helanthium bolivianum ‘vesuvius’
    7 Three colored lotus
    8 Rotala macrandra
    9 Green rotala
    10 Rotala H’Ra
    11 Cryptocoryne pontederifolia
    12 Cryptocoryne wendtii
    13 Alternanthera reineckii ‘mini’
    14 Hair grass
    After we provide CO2 and moderate lighting, we also need to make sure the CO2 stay in the water for as long as possible. This require us to give minimum surface agitation. The gas exchange between water and air will release CO2. This gas exchange happen in the water surface. The more water surface, the quicker the gas exchange. Surface agitation will increase the water surface so by reducing it, we will also reduce the gas exchange. So we need a filter that can keep the surface agitation minimum. Also, the filter also should only has moderate water movement because strong water movement will add mechanical stress to our plants.
    That’s all that we need to do to grow plants in planted aquarium without CO2 injection. If we do it correctly, the success rate is high. Good luck and thank you.

    Fantastic video - thank you! One of the best and most complete planting and trimming sequences I've seen for this type of tank - yes, plant densely from the start, let things grow in your own water parameters, see what is working and make adjustments. And your trimming - It is nice to see someone pulling out plants and replanting only tops instead of just cutting everything back and making it even more overgrown and bushy - the difference between maintenance and growth. Beautifully done.

      @SA-hk8xj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do the same, replant the tops. If I need an area more bushy, I just trim the tops and replant in the area. Works great for stem plants. Other plants...not so well. All depends. Great video. 👍😎

    I wanted to scream “stop it” every time you were tearing out plants!:)
    And you also misunderstood the nitrogen cycle. If you read Diana’s book more carefully, you will find the answer. The tank is cycled because there are lot of bacteria in the soil. Actually bacteria for nitrogen cycle are living on the surface of the sand, clay and other particles of the soil. They don’t care about water. So in our tanks they are working form the start.

      Yeah, you are right. There are lots of BB in soil. It's just that there's this deep misunderstanding thanks to repeated statement about water change will removes the BB. That's my aim to clear first.

      Beneficial bacteria, in this case is nitrifying bacteria, will present whereever there is enough ammonia for them to survive. And this tank use modified walstad method. I appreciate his effort to think out of the box to supply co2 for the plants, using compost break down, Walstaad also mention about it in her book. As long as the plants survive and grow nice, there's no right or wrong bro..., Keep on experimenting.

    Great informative video! We also did a walstad tank, did you think of adding laterite or some other source of iron for the red plants? Or is it unnecessary? The small critters should be seed shrimps!!

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There is no correlation between iron and anthocyanin (red plant pigment) that is known until now. Iron is for chloropyl which is green so I don't think it's necessary. It's better to find a way to raise CO2 level, so we can use higher light intensity for our plants.

    • @lemonlizard1
      @lemonlizard1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      high lighting seems to contribute more to redness than co2 or even iron. I'm pretty sure red actually comes from iron deficiency, but I might be totally wrong

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tall plants with their leaves grow above the water line will aerate your substrate. For emergency, you can poke the substrate to release the air trapped under the substrate. You need to be careful tho, the gas isn't dangerous, but it can release the substrate material that'll make your water cloudy. The organic matters under your substrate decomposed at much slower rate because of the low oxygen level, but once they are in oxygen rich condition, they'll decompose quickly and raise the bioload.

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, based on your information, I assume you use low tech EI approach. That method can work. I personally tested it and it worked for me, however, there are some aspects to consider when using that method:
      1. liquid CO2 is actually glutaraldehyde. It is antiseptic to sterilize medical equipment and ofc, it can also kills our plants. So, you should stop it if your plants showed bad response.
      2. With macro and micro fertilizer, our plants will get plenty of nutrients right away and that's good, but there's no CO2 suply from chemical fertilizer. The dissolved CO2 level will normally close to equilibrium (3-5 ppm). Plants can adapt to that low dissolved CO2, but you'll need to reduce the light intensity. If your plants require more light and your water source rich of CO2, then you can consider frequently small water change to supply CO2. If that's not possible then consider to get a CO2 injection system.

    It's always amazing to your plant growth. But I have been failing multiple times in this hobby. I used potting soil, but mineralized beforehand, and diy co2. Plants are growing well, after a month tank became anaerobic and killed plant roots. I had the same results for the past three attempts. I tried again with no diy co2, which is more two weeks, but plants are growing slowly and not lush and green. BBA also spreading in the foreground plant (sagettaria). I think it's also leading to another failure. I use less than half inch of soil. Is that a problem? Any suggestions or advice help me succeed in this hobby? Thanks

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Liebig's law stated that our plants' growth is determined by the lowest element available. In submerged plants, that element will most likely carbon (from CO2). When we add CO2 injection, the limited element will change to something else. So actually we create more complex system with CO2 injection.
      There's a method called estimative index (EI) that simplified this problem in high tech approach. Technically, EI method principle is to give everything in excess and reset it with 50% water change weekly. For the complete guide, you can search it. So yeah, high tech (tank with CO2 injection) will always means more maintenance.
      Also EI approach doesn't address the complex interaction between aerobic and anaerobic zone. So yeah, we shouldn't let the substrate to become too anaerob like in the a Walstad Tank.
      Low tech approach as I explained will have carbon limitation and so the plants will grow slower, but as all nutrients are available in fish food, we can go without fertilizers. However, we need to control the CO2 demand by controlling the light intensity. If our plants demand too much CO2 than what our system can provide, there'll be severe CO2 deficiency that'll kill our plants. We also should control CO2 evaporation by minimizing surface agitation and let the CO2 accumulate by turn the light off for 3 hours in the middle of photoperiod (siesta method).
      So actually there's no such thing as simple set up that'll work 100%. I'll make another beginners set up video with simpler approach, but it'll take several more weeks to finish.

    That's the drawback to plant aquariums..you really can't keep a full load of fish and feed those fish until they are fat and healthy like we like them. Big water changes help..and so does a soil full of cone snails and worms to eat up anything the fish leave.. I even put in sinking pellets after turning off the lights to keep the soil alive with critters.
    The red Camboma looks great. You do know the water wisteria is a really fast grower and heavy feeder?..it's a big plant for an aquarium that size..
    Nice idea on the LEDs...I instead used a wash of purple acrylic paints over some LED shop lights cover...helped.

    • @CoretanIjo

      you are right, I just added 8 neons in this tank and the balance went off. Yes, water wysteria took over this tank, I think I need to reduce the plants species.

    Saya mau tanya dong . Sekiranya berkenaan menjawab saya berterimakasih . Sebelumnya saya belum pernah membaca buku waltad itu . Nah pertanyaan saya adalah, TDS air dirumah saya itu berkisar 190-200. Jadi saya lebih memilih air RO dicampur isi ulang dari pertama kali setting sampai water change . Ya memang cukup memakan budget apalagi untuk tank ukuran besar . Dan substrat saya menggunakan Aquabasis dan soil Aquagrowth . Nah apakah saya bisa menggunakan air sumur yang ber-TDS tinggi atau lebih baik melanjutkan penggunaan air RO dicampur air isi ulang . Karena RO berkisar 20-30 dan isi ulang berkisar 70-80 an TDSny. Jadi adakah saran untuk saya ?

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Air di tank ini TDSnya sekitar 350, itu karena lagi musim hujan, jadi air di tempat saya TDSnya 300an. Normalnya angka TDS di tempat saya menyentuh 400an. Angka TDS ini sebetulnya tidak terlalu penting, TDS bisa berupa apa saja. Bisa zat yang berbahaya atau zat yang aman. Di tank walstad, tanaman berfungsi sebagai pemurni air. Jadi zat2 yg berlebih bakal diserap tanaman. Intinya, parameter air tidak berpengaruh banyak selama tidak terlalu ekstrim. Saran saya, air RO untuk top off nya saja, air baku pakai seadanya. Selain itu juga, di tank walstad, tidak terlalu sering ganti air. Di video, saya ganti air cuma untuk menghilangkan tanin dan membersihkan permukaan. Membersihkan permukaan cuma perlu 1-2 liter dan itupun tidak setiap hari, seminggu sekali sudah cukup. Jadi kalau ganti air baku, lakukan aja sekalian pas isi ulang air sehabis di bersihkan permukaannya supaya parameter tidak berubah terlalu cepat.

      2 Kandilas for red cambomba should be strong enough, but it'll be too much for the AR. If possible, try to reduce the tank temperature first for the AR. Lately, I find the temperature are crazy hot here, I think it'll be the same in Malaysia. If the temperature stay below 28°C and it's still not growing well, try to add shade above the AR.

      Saya tidak lagi mensterilkan tanaman sebelum ditanam. Micro fauna yg terbawa tanaman seperti cacing, keong, copepod, rhabdochoela, gamarus, dll lebih banyak manfaatnya daripada mudharatnya. Kalau untuk patogen, patogen perlu inang, asal tidak kita beri inang (ikan) selama beberapa waktu, mereka akan habis dengan sendirinya.

    Mas, saya ada beberapa pertanyaan setelah liat video ini:
    1. Saya liat cara triming disini kenapa gak potong kira2 5cm dari pucuknya lalu tanam kembali? Kenapa mas maen cabut aja dengan akar2nya sekalian lalu tanam lagi bukankah itu jadi kurang bagus buat pertumbuhan tanaman krn akar yg sudah mulai mengakar jadi kecabut lagi?
    2. Udang muncul pertama2 dari mana?
    3. Tank ini suhu airnya brp? Kenapa gak pakai kipas spy suhu dingin?
    4. Pakai pupuk cair apa gak?
    5. Cabomba saya melting pas tengah2 batangnya lalu lepas..daun jga rontok2. Apa kurang co2? Sy pakai co2 citrun soda 1 bps. Pupuk cair beli di Pojok Aquatic yg 10rban sebotolnya.

    • @CoretanIjo
      @CoretanIjo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. Jadi begini, metode cabut dan tanam lagi di hari ke 7 itu esensinya saya membuang bagian tanaman lama. Pada akhirnya entah kapan kita perlu melakukan itu karena tanaman lama semakin tua dan perlu diganti yg baru. Jadi saya hanya menanam bagian yg tumbuh di tank.
      Kemudian hari-hari berikutnya, memang teknik trimming cabomba begitu. Tanaman lain teknik trimming masih normal, asal potong dan replant. Cabomba tidak bisa seperti itu, cabomba bercabang itu jelek.
      2. Udang muncul dari filter. Filter ini di cycling di tank lain. Kemungkinan ada anakan dan telur udang yg terbawa saat filter dipindah.
      3. Orang2 cenderung menyalahkan sesuatu yang tidak bisa mereka kontrol apabila mengalami kegagalan. Pemikiran seperti ini tidak membantu. Salah satu contohnya adalah menyalahkan suhu dan parameter air. Di sini suhu tank di siang hari 29°C. Asal tidak menyentuh 30°C, saya tidak khawatir jadi sekalian saya tunjukkan bahwa suhu bukan faktor yang seharusnya disalahkan. Supaya orang2 lebih fokus ke faktor2 yg beneran berpengaruh: substrat, pencahayaan, filter dan maintenance.
      4. Tidak, hanya pupuk kompos dan pakan ikan. Di video tidak ada sekalipun saya tambah pupuk cair.
      5. Cabomba itu masalahnya umumnya soal pencahayaan.
