      It's been a while and everything is still going good... Leather is quite a tough material.
      Thanks for your comment... 🙂

    Often overseen part of machine-maintenance. I like felt, but I will give leather a try too.
    Thanks Pierre!

      Hi Stefan, So far leather is at least as good as felt, it keeps chips and fine particules away from under the slides, much better than rubber in my opinion at least, and it doesn't decompose or dry with oil...
      Cheers, Pierre

      @@pierresgarage2687 I'm thinking of stacking leather over felt, expecting the leather to protect the felt for longer...The bantam had plastic ones or what used to be rubber once (maybe) and they were so bad I always cringed upon that sight (plus my uncle turns a lot of cast iron clutches and brake discs so yikes). Ideally I would really like a steel scraper over the whole thing like the mill has, but that might be a little over the top.

    Hello there Pierre
    Great stuff and a good use of Leather which we have stacks lying around, even thicker than what U used. Nothing to beat simple maintenance which U have rightfully alerted and showed how to.
    Thanks a zillion for sharing.

      Leather is a good natural stuff and it's pretty tough in this application. don't forget to lube well also with a good way oil.... ;)

    Great reminder, Pierre. Once I get the Colchester moved its time for a good servicing. The wipers definitely need replacing! So much fine grit from the plasma table and grinding dust... Never realized how easy it could be though. Thanks!

      Hi Tom, grinding dust is terrible on machines and even worse on humans, we'd also need some wipers like machines do... lol
      Your plasma table is a great add on to a shop, I would need to enlarge the shop over here but the city people don't understant how a guy needs a place to express his creativity... ;)
      Take care, Pierre

    Another great video Pierre. ..looks like I have something to at the shop today...lol
    I did notice a small safety issue when u popped out the second wiper. Don't use the exacto knife cause those blades can snap off and next thing u know u have u have a bloody mess to deal with....lol

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob, I've been using those Olfa knives for more than 20 years now and I'm quite aware of the fact that the blade is meant to break at predetermined seams, one good tip about avoiding the unwanted breakage is to keep the blade as short as possible, this keeps the seam into the holder enough to avoid the break. Most people use those with a very long stick out and then the blade is verry prone to just snap with low force...
      Hope you're finiched changing the wipers at the shop by now... lol
      Winter is right at our door, don't forget the wipers on the car also, before the slush season statrs... ;)

    I don't understand. The wear (grit?) come from the carriage's friction, placing wipers permanently traps the grit between them and therefore accelerate wear. I was always under the impression that wipers were to prevent chips getting under the carriage?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  ปีที่แล้ว

      This doesn't mean that you neglect to pickup the grit on a regular basis, there is always a little bit of fine grit accumulating under any type of whiper, it's important to remove the bulk of the grit and chips, mostly the hardened ones.

  • @RobB_VK6ES
    @RobB_VK6ES 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    While you have wipers off it is a good opportunity to traverse the carriage up and own using plenty of oil to flush out the ways.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not mentionned in the video but done, also never use compressed air to clean the ways and carriages since it pushes the grit in all the spaces and openings, something to avoid at all cost...
      Thanks for your input, Pierre

    @SapphireEngineering 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice idea. My machine is not fitted with such wiper. However it's on my Horizontal boring machine.
    I have a better way to regularly clean it without taking it off and keeping it soft.
    We can pour a little turpentine oil or Diesel on the slide way. Move it back and forth a couple of times and leave for few minutes. Again repeat back forth over the Diesel oil. You can see the dirt coming out easily.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just make sure you always keep a good film of lubricant on the sliding surfaces, this prevents fine grit to cause wear, very important... 🌈👍

    • @SapphireEngineering
      @SapphireEngineering 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pierresgarage2687 We use the lubricant regularly . And we keep cleaning the surface very often.

    Hmmm - something I really need to do after far too long. So far though no mounting positions. I do flush with generous oil often though.

    I need to replace the wiper felt on the shaper, I need to make wipers for the Mueller, they are totally missing. I hate seeing those black smudgies on the ways, so I've gotten a bit obsessive about keeping them wiped clean. I've noticed a few with freshly restored lathes having that crud showing up on the first job, like the machine was never apart. That has got to be discouraging. Or disgusting, I'm not sure what to call it.

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As soon as the nasty grit gets betwen the ways and the sliding parts there is gonne be some wear, it takes longer to dammage hardened parts but it still does it, good idea to make something to keep those clean or make some kinda wiper if there is noe to protect the tool...
      Good amout of way oil is also needed in order to make a decent cushion to keep the steel parts some distance appart from each other... ;)
