just to clarify about the Folgers Instant Coffee commercial, back in the day they didnt even have the perkolators that we use today, they had to do it on the stove like making a pot of Tea, only they had to cook the coffee grounds along with it. so Coffee could end up Burnt, Weak, way too Strong or just terribly strained, leading to a grainy mouth feeling.
Injun Orange and Chinese Cherry actually faced a backlash as soon as they came out. Pillsbury renamed those flavors pretty much immediately. As a separate issue, the drinks (all flavors) were originally sweetened with Cyclamates, which were banned in 1970. Then they switched to Saccharin. Finally, they gave up and just offered unsweetened powder, the same as their competitor Kool-Aid.
"The United States banned cigarette advertisements on television and radio in 1970, with the ban taking effect on January 2, 1971. President Richard Nixon signed the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act on April 1, 1970, in response to public health advocates and health studies that linked smoking to cancer and heart disease. The last televised cigarette ad aired on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson on New Year's Day 1971 at 11:50 PM. " Google Also, a lot of these commercials are racist in tone: Funny Face Drinks include Goofy Grape, but also Injun Orange, and Chinese Cherry (dehumanizing and humiliating; they have Funny Faces because they aren't white people).
I hate the politically correct movement. Nobody seems to be looking at the times these came from. Everything was different then. A huge demographic was still learning acceptance of other cultures/genders. We see this stuff today but in different aspects. Instead of hating what was we should be learning from it and embracing it as what made us what we are today. Yes we had darkness and ignorance in our past but we've learned from it. We need to keep learning from it and move forward. Focus on what we are doing wrong NOW so future generations won't post videos about us.
Then there's the "Social Hygiene" clips and the Civil Defense "Duck and Cover" clips! Lol
Smoking does lower the voice because it dries out the vocal cords.
