I met Patti when I worked at a club where she performed at a club in Chicago. She shyly asked for a cup of black coffee. After I gave it to her she said thank you and stepped back into the shadows quietly and just kind of disappeared. An hour later she was on stage and was amazing. I had met many very famous musicians but none were as humble as she. Many thanks for posting this!!
Exceptional world class artist, seen her live and up close in an accoustic live session in Berlin recently celebrating 30years fall of the wall and important memories of her life. Unforgettable presence and voice. She is gold
It's sureal to know that the song that made her so successfull lay on just this tiny moment of a lover waiting for a phone call. It make me love the song even more.
I love how she grins almost bashfully at the audience and Remneck between verses. An artist who truly cares about reaching her audience in a meaningful way, and still does so remarkably well!
Amber Tucker Why is it when musicians age we say, she still does remarkably well - like Patti would be incapable of giving a Patti Smith performance due to age? Aging doesn't have to mean incapacitated.
Great Patti!! I was introduced to your album Easter in 78 when I was a senior in highschool!! I fell in love with it!! I was lucky enough to find the music book years later and play many of the songs on my Baby Grand!! Much Peace & Love
I have since the the 70s and always will be in total awe of patties amazing talent and unique voice... Its a never ending love affair.. I hope pattie lives forever.. And even that won't be long enough for the world to enjoy her immensnes
I am a longtime lover of Patti Smith, her music, poetry, nonfiction and all-around fabulousness. I so appreciate the way she participates in the world!! Great job David Remnick on accompanying Patti on “Because The Night.” 💖
Truer words have never been written. My favorite rock and roll album ever. I've listened to EASTER (literally) thousands of times. The ultimate rock record.
I bought Easter when it came out! I still Love it and Patti and her band PSG. A lot of friends thru out my life never understood Patti and My Love for her since 1975, Not even my wife ,,, I don't know if Patti would ever read these comments here on You Tube, but I would like her to know we are still out here , LOVING her music in 2020!!!!!! Bob
One thing I find amazing is there is little to no reverb on her mic. Rare to never do you hear singers not using good amounts of reverb. It enhances their voices. Patti doesn’t need any help at all!!!!
Very cool story, and a classic song. I first heard it when Patti opened for the Rolling Stones in the Spring of 78. (They were playing stadiums, but played a couple of shows in small venues. This was at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, which holds about 4,900). My reaction was, *WOW*, what a great song. I don't believe Bruce ever released a studio version of Because the Night, but he played it at many of the 1978 "Darkness on the Edge of Town" tour shows, and plays it occasionally, still. I first experienced it, coincidentally, at his show at the same Fox Theater on September 30. I also heard it at Winterland in San Francisco on December 15, 1978, with about 5,000 others who were packed in. I'd say the song was well received, but judge for yourself (I'd suggest turning it up). th-cam.com/video/MuIzWgWN2d0/w-d-xo.html By the way, that's Bruce playing lead.

Such an inspiring female artist!!!! True to the core and free as a bird!!!

What a beautiful soul she is. Took a good song to new heights and owned it. This coming from a Bruce fan!
She sounds fantastic! Her voice is lovely and so powerful doesn't even need that microphone. Brava!
In some ways, she has gotten better.
@@katperson1955 I agree. She is such an authentically humble, though terrifically talented artist!

She hasn't missed a beat! sounds good just like she first sang it!
I am one of those Springsteen fanatics…but I have to admit that Patti took this song to a place Bruce couldn’t reach.
Aw. I wish the audience sang along more! Still love Patti.
