We couldn't ask for a better induction speech than this. When poetry was on the ropes during glam and punk's birth- there was Patti waiting for it to be lifted up. In the same way she courted Dylan she courted Lou- reminding us why women were the saviors of music in the late 70's and early 80's. Patti understood the spiritual significance of music- and she led the way along with Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, Chrissie Hynde and so many more towards signifying women not just as "female" artists- but powerful true artists who needed no qualifications. She was the true poet of New York ('75-'77) when poetry had few champions. I love hearing her earnest and soul baring words.

Well, of course I love to hear Patti speak. Over the years I have come to know her better and better. A real human being, one who never speaks hollow words, and who never takes herself too seriously. Maybe that realness is what I admire about her most, aside from her music. // Nice to see Laurie Anderson smiling with admiration and approval.

When I was in Jr. High and High School a lot of my friends were into Kiss and Boston and The Eagles. I discovered Lou Reed after I got Mott the Hoople's "All the young Dudes" album. Who wrote this "Sweet Jane" song? It's a really good song. Next thing you know I had Transformer and Berlin and Rock & Roll Animal. By '77 some of my friends were liking Lou as well.

He observed, he wrote it down, he explained for the knowing and unknowing, put it to music as his form of expressing his life's moments and observations. He was an accomplished storyteller, the best of his craft. He was gifted and as gifted as the intellectual woman Patty Smith honoring his
induction in the RNRHALL. This woman is a powerhouse!

Many, many years ago in the analogue age, before the internet I sent a letter to Lou’s record company in the US just saying I much I dug “Take No Prisoners” (yeah, I know) About a year later I received a photo posted to me in London from NewYork - of Lou and signed with the words ‘thank you’. I thought that was pretty gracious of the cantankerous dude - it took a while but he got around to it!.
