Choir! Choir! Choir! & Patti Smith sing "PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER" in NYC with Stewart Copeland

  • On April 13, 2019, Patti Smith + Stewart Copeland (on percussion) joined Choir! Choir! Choir! at Onassis Festival 2019: Democracy Is Coming, co-presented by The Public Theatre and Onassis USA. Together, we sang Patti Smith's anthem "People Have The Power" with a sold-out crowd and Stewart Copeland played percussion, specially a Brazilian samba frying pan!
What happened was pure magic and we're still pinching ourselves. A special thanks to everyone who helped to make this moment happen. Enjoy! #UseYourVoice

I don't know how Patti can be so tough and punk rock, so otherworldly and graceful and so cute and full of warmth at the same time. She is a force of nature.
And this is such a beautiful rendition of such an important Song Of hope.

Her hands define Patti. They are her tools and are so Graceful even when in a fist of passion or laying out an imaginary landscape or writing: even sipping coffee. Tiny noticeable hands.

The US imperial state is what this song fights against and dismantles credibility of.. we sit on hundreds and hundreds of Indigenous soverign first-Nations that have been continuously colonized by the US state system for hundreds of years. The concept of "country" outside native place-based existance is an invisibilizing colonial narrative that upholds imperial violence and legitimizes its continued use of genocidal policies. We need to use decolonizing methodologies as strategy to help decentralize this state power, bring Indigenous resistance movements to the front pages, and fight to shift autonomy back to those it was stolen from.. thats what real justice is about; dismantling state violences. If we don't legitimize the heirarchy, the orange man has no power.

My 10 year old daughter just performed People Have the Power at an event based on this wonderful arrangement. Originally she auditioned for the event with a drum arrangement, but had to play it on piano due to technical stage limitations (both videos are on my channel). Thank you Patti Smith and CHOIRx3. It's a timeless song, particularly in 2024, a year marked by the huge number of elections in some of the most populous countries in the world. I loved it, posted it and tagged it in my channel. At the same event, my daughter sang Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. We did not realize the coincidence until before the performance. Meg White divorced Jack White (who wrote 7NA) and remarried Jackson Smith, the very son of Patti and Fred Smith, who wrote PHTP.

I first saw her recently on the Nobel Prize rendition of It's A Hard Rain, which ended up really really good with a well deserved heartfelt ovation. She's so human, humble, down to earth. Now I'm a huge fan. This performance with the choir, which TH-cam automatically sent me to, is a treasure for the ages. Her performance with the hand gestures is really cool, the people are so inspired, and her genuine smiles and earthiness fun to watch. Thank you!

I was dreaming in my dreaming
Of an aspect bright and fair
And my sleeping it was broken
But my dream it lingered near
In the form of shining valleys
    Where the pure air recognized
    And my senses newly opened
    I awakened to the cry
That the people have the power
To redeem the work of fools
Upon the meek the graces shower
It' s decreed the people rule
    The people have the power
    The people have the power
    The people have the power
    The people have the power
    Vengeful aspects became suspect
And bending low as if to hear
    And the armies ceased advancing
Because the people had their ear
And the shepherds and the soldiers
    Lay beneath the stars
    Exchanging visions
    And laying arms
    To waste in the dust
In the form of shining valleys
    Where the pure air recognized
    And my senses newly opened
    I awakened to the cry
    Where there were deserts
    I saw fountains
    Like cream the waters rise
    And we strolled there together
With none to laugh or criticize
    And the leopard
    And the lamb
    Lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
To recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
    God knows a purer view
As I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you
    Where there were deserts
    I saw fountains
    Like cream the waters rise
    And we strolled there together
With none to laugh or criticize
    And the leopard
    And the lamb
    Lay together truly bound
I was hoping in my hoping
To recall what I had found
I was dreaming in my dreaming
    God knows a purer view
As I surrender to my sleeping
I commit my dream to you
The power to dream to rule
To wrestle the world from fools
It' s decreed the people rule
It' s decreed the people rule
    I believe everything we dream
Can come to pass through our union
We can turn the world around
We can turn the earth' s revolution
    We have the power
    People have the power

    A RELAXING NOSTALGIC EVENING
On the wicker armchair, covered with voluminous cushions, in the courtyard of the park where I am temporarily a guest, I enjoy a bit of relaxation with the warmth of a starry evening at last, in a moment of respite from the weather, of a rather crazy summer even for this side of the equator. I admire the well-kept park and those well-arranged lights that alternate chiaroscuro among the trees, creating a dream atmosphere, alternating songs from my youth, which I always listen to with a lot of nostalgia but also bring me a mixture of sadness for the difficult moments of that time , both emotionally and financially. As always in these cases, I would like to go back and take courage, give me the hope that over time I too would have reached goals and experienced situations, unthinkable at the time. My nephew is chasing the ball not far away and listens to his ear getting closer and closer to my chair. When John Lennon's “Imagine” passes, he leaves the game and sits next to me. As soon as he finishes he tells me ".. come on, grandpa again! ..". I understand that those songs from 50-60 years ago still hit the mark, after 2 generations. To some Cat Steven songs, and Bob Dyilan puts his arm around my neck, and closes his eyes, almost savoring the moment. When I pose Cohen's Alleluia, he seems to want to participate and begins to follow Leonard at each Alleluia, with his shrill voice, even if a couple of notes higher. But as soon as she hears Patti Smith, accompanied by a choir, with her "people have the power" she can't resist anymore and wants to sing with them. He seems to admire Patti's expressions, which seems to bring out from her heart, the poetry of what she is reciting rather than singing. It is a poetic moment for me too, this moment of affection mixed with nostalgia. The miracle is interrupted at the sound of the voice of the mother who, with a peremptory invitation obviously in Russian, reminds him of the duty to go to sleep. A couple of gne gne are not enough, and he knows well that neither her complaint, nor that of her grandfather (who would like not to interrupt that magical moment) will stir up the categorical invitation of the daughter-in-law. Evening to be stored among my good memories. I go to bed calmly, hoping that one day, when I am no longer there, he will resurface too, listening to one of those beautiful songs of ... when his grandfather was young
