I was taught this many years ago by my classical teacher Dr Stephen Snook in Sydney, he also emphasized the importance of hitting both notes exactly simultaneously all the way through. He could tell if i was off by a millisecond! :) great exercise!

...it seems like this exercise with separated picking would be a good timing work out as well eh ?
I remember doing this when I was learning “Classical Guitar”. Had to do this up the neck.

Seems like calling out the note names would help us there as well... At least maybe the whole notes (AKA not sharps or flats)
