On a long-distance bus from Pretoria to the Beitbridge border post, the conductor makes his passengers an irresistible offer: he can help them extend their stay in South Africa beyond the 90-day legal limit - for a small fee. Many of his passengers are undocumented foreign nationals who should be on their way back to Zimbabwe. Instead, they’ll pay the fee to obtain a new 90-day stamp and “legally” remain in the country. Many of them won't even stand face to face with the customs official who stamps their passports. On these long-distance buses, this practice - called buying days - is common, as bus drivers and Home Affairs officials line their pockets at the expense of those desperate to remain in South Africa. Carte Blanche investigates.

Just sickens me to the pit if my stomach that these people are so blaz^e about their illegal activities. Shes on a visitors permit yet shes hot a stall selling like a hawker? Ah, ah,ah. Our previous government has a lot to answer for. They just sat on the gra vy train and let corruption run rife. If there aren't enough staff to manage all the orders, close some. Reshuffle these corrupt officials. Close that bosman bus stop. Let them find another means to play their easy money making illegal corrupt schemes. Disgusting that they are so shameless telling of their exploits. No wonder we get called a banana republic. Now all I can pray for is that our new ministers sees all of this and start doing arrests of these corrupt birder personnel. Our country is being drained dry by these illegal thieving corrupt individuals. Please new GNU ministers do something speedily. Thank u Carte Blanch for ur fearless investigative journalism.

You know very well that people buying days is just scratching the service of what's going on at at that border. This story seems as though is more of a distraction to pull people's attention away from the huge and very dangerous syndicates that are controlling what, not who, goes over the bridge. Politicians, officials, businessmen and gangsters have wonderfully lucrative relationships whilst the clearing guys help with the paperwork. Everybody wins, except the tax payer of course.

What is better, for them to buy days and be in the country legally or for them to be in the country illegally totally and unaccounted for? Fact of the matter is ryt now Zimbabweans are not living South Africa any time soon. Our brothers from Zim need to be serious about their situation. Political mobilization needs to be aligned with Intelligence and militant arms. It's so odd that amongst the successful and skilled Zimbabweans with power to organize and fund these arms, are not trying anything. At least to my knowledge. There are acturies, Dr's, Influential athletes, entrepreneurs all accepting their fate, disintegrating their immediate families to flourish in foreign lands. Leaving behind A rich, beautiful and historic country that just needs a disciplined revolution. Without mentioning politicians South African academics, professionals and artists such as Makeba were winning Grammys yet constantly reminded the world the main goal is to go back home. They funded the revolution. Stop debating, arguing points of view, analysis, charts and angles. There's no peaceful transfer of power... South Africa fooled the world thinking peaceful transition exists, we just prolonged a civil war. We put war numbers up in terms of daily murders and consume alcohol like a post war country. Not to glorify that but we fought for our dignity and home alas with its ills is a beautiful country. Stop talking and start organizing.

They have been voting for the opposition but the government has become so brazen in the way they steal /rig the elections. Zimbabweans are not even allowed to hold peaceful protests. Several organisations had planned to have demonstrations during the SADC summit on 17 August 2024. A week before that there was an insane number of soldiers and Riot Police deployed across the country. Several people were abducted at night and others arrested and are still detained, charged with “plans to incite violence “. Some people were arrested whilst busy braaing and drinking. You cannot reason with these people and several are poisoned whilst in prison. There are freedoms entrenched in the constitution but in reality there are none. Zim has no more rule of law as Mnangagwa said, “we are the police, we’re the army and we’re the judiciary “ Night abductions are frequent and sometimes you never find the bodies. So the truth is people feel powerless to do anything and they fear for their lives and those of their families. People want to stay in their country but the way things are make them desperate to seek refuge elsewhere. What the reporter said though is very true” This is unsustainable” Zimbabweans need to come up with a different solution because ZANU will never surrender power peacefully.

Once you understand what those things are for, you understand the purposes of borders and the decarmation of countries. When you have failed to decarmate your home, it's very irresponsible and displays a lack of accountability and responsibility. This is because any unoccupied area is seen by any creature to be freely available for anyone and anything. The law enforcement authorities and your own leaders that you have voted for and gave the power to make decisions are doing what you voted for. You still voted for them even after years of disappointment. You can't expect anything to change when you yourself can't change your decisions. when you pay a foreigner ANY MONEY be it a wage or a salary that money is disappearing out of the country and not being circulated in amongst our people. When we have tourists VISITING our country they leave money behind at hotels , returants , car guards and tourists places which creates jobs for us, enabling us as south Africans to start thriving. we should be welcoming these tourists with a frikken red carpet to come here safely. the Zimbos who are extracting our money need to be stopped at all costs. this is economics 101! this current government knows that once people are empowered on their own they'll quickly realize they don't need the government for anything and they'll be thrown to the kerb, so they keeping everyone in poverty with this situation as they still can be in power

I must say, even after watching this video, I still admire the car wash guy, and the lady selling fruits and vegetables, these people pose now threat.
These are the kind of people that really need to be assisted to be in our country.
I just love them, true hustlers.
I just wish there government should allow them to pay those money directly into the BMA and cut the middle as a way to eliminate corruption.

I don't think you understand the concept of a country. Those people you admire are a burden on the SAn Govt and taxes we pay. They are also a burden on poor SAns who have to compete with them for space on public hospitals, schools, etc.
SA has millions of poor SAns that it must look after. It does not have resources to look after millions of informa traders from neighbouring countries.
Understand how countries are run before you promote anarchy at the expense of SAns.

Dear Carte Blanche, i think the narrative you have put across is somehow imbalanced because you didn't cover both sides of the story. Yes people do that and pay a bribe to get an extension because there is a very limited amount of days they are given to be in the country and see if things can work out for them and explore opportunities available. Why cant the government extend the temporary visa period to stop all this. And since South Africa also needs skilled labour why cant they take an approach like how the west does it so that they can retain skilled people rather than an approach which chases away foreign labour. At the border poster even if you go straight the officials themselves will not even give you the standard 90 days when you do the right thing. 90 days has become a special privilege for those that can pay for it, of which this is the root of the entire problem. Its unlike at the airport whereby if you come in they automatically give you the standard 90 days without any questions asked. As for the border there is so much more at play than what you have covered and I think your story needs a pt2 with an in-depth understanding of the situation.

@@ItsTimeZAthey're on it's visitors visa which is three months, not work visa. And you think what those people are doing is skilled labour? Street vending, car washing and eating McDonald's🤨. People with skilled labour come to South Africa because there's already a job waiting for them, mainly because they applied online and met the requirements for a job. Stop supporting these people what they're all doing is wrong, including the border officials.

People who are skilled come here because there's already a job waiting for them, since they've applied online and met the requirements. Stop defending wrong doings.

And also everywhere around the world, 90 days is the maximum days anyone gets if passport holders from a certain country are favoured by the host country. American and European countries have 90 days visa when coming to south Africa as well which many other African countries don't have with south Africa. It's only sadc countries.
