This is a great video for Goreyphiles like me, but let's not forget that there was another animated iteration of the Mystery! intro, drawn by Gorey, that preceded the one highlighted here. And there was a shorter ending sequence as well. I think we'd all agree Gorey's art is so enticing, with some images spooky and others curiously unsettling.

Ah, the glorious, gloomy Gorey! Loved the PBS Mystery intro animation and the shows that followed. Good times.

This is a lot of fun to watch, however I'm still wondering what happened to the animated still image short films made from Gorey's books that were narrated and shown at the end of various Mystery episodes, apparenrly at loose ends when there was extra time on US viewings left over from the UK shows. Can you help me track them down?

Yes! I just came here to ask about those. I think they were called 3 minute Mysteries but I'm not sure but I remember liking them at the end I was about 12 or so at the time when I remember them

My favorite artist was Edward Gorey. I grew up in the NYC area during the 1970s and 1980s, and one of my favorite stations to always watch was PBS Channel 13. I watched MYSTERY! almost religiously.

This is like history in the making. I mean, WGBH (A PBS station) produces Mystery! because this show is kind of like a 'New England' series that BBC wouldn't produced. : )

Love this series dedicated to Edward gorey. Hugeee fan of his illustrations. The black and white shaded aesthetic reminds me of Diane Arbus’s work and Tim Burdon’s movies

To this day, I wonder what's going on with the woman in the blue dress, laying on the roof, in the rain. Like, what's her deal?

Wait wait wait, did Edward Gorey actually do the animation here? I never knew that! That's so cool!!

Fantastic! What a treat. I'm going to bookmark so I can watch this in October too. I dig everything macabre: Gorey, Addams, Poe, Tim Burton, etc. And forgive me for being easily distracted by something cool but Ms. Mason's dress here (check it out at 1:26 in this video) is absolutely amazing. It looks like Universal Monsters with brilliant helpings of color. Love it. I would take a piece of that fabric and frame it, lol.

So happy to find a video of this animation. It’s my all-time favorite opening of any show! I’v a small collection of Edward Gorey books which includes the set of Dracula, and some of his other pop-up books!

I just found this video today, I never heard of Edward Gorey until "Rachel Gets Creative" she's doing a Halloween series this year on his ABC book. Now to see this, Mystery is one of my viewing staples. I love the beginning, with all the different character including the one I call Snidely Whiplash and lady on the roof top moaning, it's sad that it's been shortened so much. I never knew the beginner that I've enjoyed for years was created by Edward Gorey. Amazing. I do wish they would bring back the full beginning, it's part of what makes Mystery special.

OMG The statue at the very beginning is where the culprit hid the body/skeleton! I always noticed it (what with the lightning strike) but never really understood what it meant.

I like gary larson he pretty good. I also like the dark works of dr.seuss. I grew up watching mystery, doctor who, and are you being served, because pbs was one of the only stations we received. the cable tv stopped a few miles away. really used to piss me off.

GBH, can you tell me any info on a short animation (or maybe it was just still images from the book) of Edward Gorey's The Hapless Child I saw around 1983. I think it aired right after Mystery to fill in the time. I can't find any info on its existence, but I clearly remember watching this as a child. Who narrated it? Is there any way to see this again?

I need to make a suggestion about the host's body movements: stop it. I know this sounds petty, but it's _really distracting!_ I guess he's using hand gestures, but all we're seeing is his shoulders jerking around and unusual movements of his head. It looks really weird! It took me a while to figure out what was going on, which made me miss what he'd said. Even if we could see his lower body, those movements are way too animated. He looks nervous and unpolished. I'm surprised the director didn't point this out.

LeavingIt Blank, hmm, how do you really feel? i'm kidding. i think the host, Ben, is just really excited. i think his body movements are endearing in a way, like a kid at Christmas. it's clear he is happy to see the wonderful originals, and i cannot blame him. besides, i'd rather watch a host taking delight in what he's doing than one who seems bored. i think your comment was a bit harsh, but to each their own. maybe he was nervous too but if they felt it was that distracting, they could've done more takes or edited some of it out

I'm sorry, but I do agree the effeminate body language is a bit - bothersome. So I tend to block that stuff out and focus on the content and not the person giving the introduction.
