    As someone who’s also been obsessing over our future in space for the past few years, I like this, we seem to have converged on a lot of ideas (I especially like the idea of exploring a semi-post-scarcity society). I’d be interested to see how you think the Moon and Mars will look into the 23rd century, as I’ve imagined them as having different colonial territories and/or slowly breaking off into their own nations

    • @Neatling
      @Neatling  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

      If I expand on this scenario at some point I may focus more on the various political entities throughout the solar system and how they're structured. As for what I actually think, I'm very uncertain, which is why I think this "alternate history" format works great, as I can just guess and make assumptions. In this scenario as of 2200 I image the political entities of the Moon are very closely tied to Earth. The United Nations has been restructured, veto rights are gone, and it actually has real power, functioning as a loose confederation akin to the European Union. The Lunar Council, now a unified federal republic, is a member of the United Nations just like the EU, China or North American Union.
      The Lunar Council is their means of resolving local disputes, and how all Moon colonies are represented at the UN. But political entities overlap, with Earth nations retaining the rights to use infrastructure on the moon to some capacity, as its how they colonize the solar system without being tied down by expensive Earth launches. So I think it would be a mix. By 2200 I think almost all decisions would be made locally on the moon through some framework like a Lunar Council, as well as smaller subdivisions, while Earth nations would keep some sort of loose ties to their Lunar settlements in order to maintain acces to their space infrastructure.

    • @rustyshackleford234
      @rustyshackleford234 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I’d imagine it would be similar to European colonies in the Americas but without the natives and wouldn’t be looked back upon as horrific. Slowly these martians and lunar men will culturally become more and more different than the mother country that their colony is ruled by. Eventually they’ll secede and become solar system powers themselves. Heck, one might mirror the United States and become the most powerful and influential nation in the system.

    I'm writing a sci-fi universe called "Ikanis Universe" with a friend and I really liked the way you treated this alternate future. Right now I am in the process of researching futurology in numerous places, in addition to reading books on the subject.
    Also my search is on the internet, looking for pages on this topic, and watching videos like these as a way to base myself on the data given here to create the future of the science fiction universe that my friend and I are creating, it seems. As for the idea presented here, I have a very similar vision about the future of today in 200 years.
    I have seen the previous parts of this video and they are very good, I rely on a part of it for my science fiction universe as well as other sources where I look for guidance and inspiration for it.

      My friend and I who are working on the project try to be as realistic as possible.
      Although in reality this universe is utopian science fiction in some aspects, like Star Trek, not in all but in some, such as showing that humanity and the Earth evolved to be a better civilization in the centuries to come. But it's also about dystopian and dark themes.
      There are several things that I could consider realistic to the point of being hard science fiction, such as the space battles that we make realistic. While in other things there are aspects of this that could be considered speculative and fantastic, because there are quite a few exotic concepts like parallel universes and alternative timelines, or beings of great cosmic powers.
      The Ikanis Universe is divided into three parallel realities called Nuclei: N1, N1.1 and N2, the main realities, although there are 7 in total, and other multiverses, within a Multiverse called "The Registry" by a brane hypercomputer created by a type six civilization that records numerous past, present and even future events from across the multiverse.
      By the way, the name of the universe "Ikanis" comes from the name of the protagonist, "Ikanis Calinner", a human-like alien woman, artificially created in a laboratory as a project of an alien species also human-like, called the Sanssahar.
      If you are interested in knowing more about this universe, keep contacting me, thank you. And I have a blog, on the blogger platform where we publish the stories of this universe and others of our authorship, you can find the link in the links on my TH-cam channel.
      By the way, my native language is not English, it is Spanish, the blog is in Spanish, but right now I am trying to translate our stories into English so that more people can read them. I'm also learning English.
      By the way, now I ask, what is your universe about? Greetings.

      About my story. I'm planning a sci fi story in several parts. At the time of the prequel we are in the 23rd century. Humanity, which has evolved more and more into a united species and has already colonized many planets and moons in the solar system with a lot of trade between the colonies and Earth. A dyson sphere is currently being built, but it is far from finished.
      In any case, humanity is starting a project to spread humanity throughout the galaxy. :)
      So much for the backstory, don't want to give too much away. The real story is about a girl born in a colony as part of the project.
      There is a really dystopian ending, at least for the 1st part. So much for that :D

      Your story is interesting, it seems that humanity reached a class II civilization quite quickly by already having a Dyson sphere under construction around the Sun. It seems that humanity is in a golden age. Something I wonder about is that there are other alien species, in addition to this galactic colonization project.
      I understand, I don't want to reveal too much of my backstory either. And you already have a character, that girl born in space. I would love to read about the universe. Right now the Ikanis Universe of me and my friend have started writing the first book, we plan to send it to a publisher, and we are also trying to find a way to copyright our writings since it is something very important.

    I think that with the onset of anti-aging medicines and the rise of personalized medicines (thanks to the protein folding problem being solved by AI) and CRISPR, it's not too far off to suggest that personal gene-editing of the human race by choice is out of the picture. Certain attributes to make selected individuals be more suited for long voyage space missions around the solar system and even beyond into interstellar exploration missions. I feel like the US uniting with Mexico is always done in scifi scenarios. I think a LatAm union that incorporates Mexico is more realistic. Maybe there would be a conflict over trade between the US and LatAm when Mexico joins them. I think a cultural union of the anglo states (US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ) makes more sense for the US too

    • @Nuaheal

      A union of the Hispanic world or the Iberian-speaking countries is more realistic than Latin America, In Spanish-speaking countries a movement is starting that could be translated as "Hispanism" Which can be very strong if it continues to expand, thanks to the internet this ideology could easily enter politics, It is literally creating a Spanish empire 2.0, but in phases that would last decades, Milei won the presidency due to the corruption of the corrupt Argentine governments and his popularity on the internet, Hispanism, being a decentralized ideology, So it can be adapted to communism, protectionism, ancap, etc.

    • @oldylad
      @oldylad 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I disagree. You’re thinking culturally and not economically, politically, geographically, diplomatically, etc etc. Mexico and the US are already melding culturally. The “immigrant crisis” isn’t being overblown, most states along the border have a substantial Mexican population, and the same will happen as he said in the video in reverse to Mexico as they stabilize. There’s also the issue of LatAms instability and Americas already strong position, if Mexico had to choose today they’d choose the US and it isn’t odd for them to do the same in future. Maybe a LATNAU would form between Mexico, the Central Americans and the Caribbean states that may then join a NAU, but I think the NAU is inevitable in some form, especially as cultural divides weaken

    • @da_plug13
      @da_plug13 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @oldylad you make a fair, if uncomfortable point. I agree that the current immigration crisis could completely change the cultural fabric of the US, if it hasn't started already. However, with the rise of strict anti immigration politicians and rhetoric, it's not impossible to think that the trend could be halted or even reversed with the original cultural ties being restored. Birth rates are also collapsing throughout Latin America and the Hispanic population in America. While it still might be more realistic for a north american union, I was perhaps yearning for something different. An alternate future where cultural norms and values don't decline.

      @stevenroshni1228 In economic terms, sure. But politically and socially, it's still pretty far off. I don't see the economic ties ever fading away but as the Anglosphere grows more and more skeptical of immigration and concerned more with cultural preservation, I don't think a full on political union with Mexico is as likely as portrayed in the sci fi genre. I said previously that a LatAm union would be more realistic but perhaps that's not true either as there are many major disagreements between these nations and they have widely different cultures and societies. I would need to research more into though. I wonder if the difference between American and British culture is smaller than the difference between say Argentine and Colombian culture. I've only ever been to Mexico and Costa Rica and while there are similarities, I was able to pick up on many differences with even my miniscule capability of the Spanish language. Anyways those are my thoughts, sorry for ranting lmao

    • @Neatling
      @Neatling  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Thanks! It's actually just based on real world efforts which I find interesting, and imagine could lead to an eventual complete curing of ageing. From what I can gather scientists have successfully not just prevented, but also reversed ageing in mice through gene therapy. So I don't think it's that big a leap to say we may do the same in humans this century. Perhaps first in our pets, so we can have them with us for longer. Then the ultra wealthy will have acces to it, and then eventually the general population.
      In this scenario specifically I imagine wealthy ageing societies like Europe, Japan, China and North America offer the treatment either freely or cheaply through government subsidies to their populations, in order to avoid the worst affects of collapsing birth rates. But in poorer countries it would probably be more difficult to get acces to, some countries might even restrict the acces to anti ageing medication because their populations are growing too much.

    • @Bezimienny1598
      @Bezimienny1598 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alexander-5848The biggest hurdle right now in Aging science is the astronomical amount of data needed to predict protein folding and the mechanisms involved in the process of aging. Our current systems are incapable of managing this and we're still collecting the neccesary data but AI will 100% become advanced enough in as little as a decade of time.
      After that, it's basically just collecting data and letting the AI do its thing with enough compute. The AI will predict new, as of yet unknown proteins which will result in a LOT of new medications and let us better understand how proteins behave in our bodies.
      Preventing aging altogether is, I agree here, at least a century away but with AI spearheading the number crunching which we desperately need, we'll extend our lifetimes by decades if not a century. That means that we'll keep extending our lives as long as it's needed for proper gene editing to be perfected and let us finally cure aging.
      This is already starting, really. Over the last few years, thousands(if I remember correctly) of new biomed companies have been opening up with their mission being curing aging or at least extending life. As of yet, it's only really billionaires funding these in hopes of extending their lives but it should start picking up steam once research gets going.

    2:00 - Don't forget more advanced launching systems. Some cargos can "yeet" in space at 1000 G, such as using orbital cannon or Spinlaunch. There's ongoing research towards the orbital elevator. Using active support (think bouncing castle, but with molten iron instead of air) it's possible to build other launching megastructures. Orbital ring seems like the best 1960's science approach towards daily commute to LEO or even evacuating Earth if it comes to that (same colony ships as A.C.Clarke envisioned). It may turn out the Orbital ring is easier to build than Elevator, although politics may play against it.
    There are also other conceptual ways to get in space, which often seem like UFO: For example there's induction-based engine NASA is already testing in satelites, but like atmospheric ion engines it may require serious advances in superconductor and material engineering. More down-to earth approach is using laser instead of the oxidizer. If I remember right, the proposal claimed instead 90 % reduction of the rocket mass. So a ship like Starship would deliver kilotons of cargo in one go or instead of 500 $/kg it would be 50 $/kg.
    Want a dirt cheap electricity from space? See Mars Valineris up close at Christmas? Move to Epsilon Eridani, after spending few decades in cryo and never look back, once the new optimized fusion starliner launches? We are so close yet so far, but it's possible.

    I think it would be interesting to consider the possibilities of genetic engineering in future scenarios like this. It could be possible to engineer humans to assume a ton of different forms and be physically fit for a multitude of different environments. Challenges like radiation and microgravity could be overcome by just tweaking ourselves to be able to tolerate them.

    Ai is just too hyped up. Go back to the 70s, people were saying that humans would have colonized Mars, but in 2024 here we are. Ai is not the next revolution it will fade into insignificance by the 2040s

      Why would it fade into Insignificance? ChatGPT, GPT-4 and other AIs are already Displacing Humans in the Workforce.
      Not to Mention that AI is an Extremely Useful Tool to either Automate Processes or Help you in general.
      Even if Moor's Law (the Numbers of Transistors in an Integrated Circuit Doubles every two years) died Today and AI Plateaued, it would still Stay a Useful tool that Many People use and has Already Displaced Workers.
      Additionally, we aren't even Using the AI we have NOW to the Full Potential. How Many Schools have you seen using GPT-4 or Gemini as a Smart Teacher? How many People (probably like you) are there, who are still not using AI at Work or at Home where it would Help?
