Blocking the field running third, to let his teammate Michael and son Dale Jr run on in 1, 2 .... with DW upstairs with a mic, there will never be a more impactful moment in professional sports. Ever. Chokes me up to this day every time I think about it.
@@donrino7377this makes me feel even more bad for darell and michael.....dw had probably the most complete career in nascar other than benny parsons...both in a great way and very very tragic way

@@evanwilliams6406 exactly no one did, after all many believed his crash at Daytona looked like one he was gonna easily walk away from wasn't like what happened at Talladega in 96.
19 NASCAR Championships sitting there between those men. Great group of drivers celebrating the retirement of one of their own. Too bad they couldn’t have done it for Dale. He’s sitting in a car in heaven now, racing Neil, Tim Richmond, Davey Allison, Tony Roper, Adam Petty, Fireball Roberts, Alan Kulwicki and others around the track at the “Heavenly 500”.
Wow, what they did for Darrell was beautiful. Epic tribute to a once great driver! There was just so much comradery with the older drivers back then, you don't see enough of that these day with the younger drivers and its kinda sad. Unless you watch Dale Jr's podcast, he really talks it up with his buddies and his dads old rivals!
Yeah I feel if the younger drivers had some personality NASCAR wouldn't be so bland and it would be easier for people to have a driver to root for y'know
@@j9vlikz683 Some of them have personality, but they're not relatable or distinct. They're almost exclusively polished metropolitan trust fund kids. If you were in the kitchen and couldn't see the screen, you could tell if (to name a few examples) Bobby Allison, Bill Elliott, Harry Gant, or Sterling Marlin was being interviewed.
Man, you said it. I loved watching these guys rough eachother up but rally around eachother like true family. These days, ha...it's not the same. At the racetrack or out in the world, we've lost our connection with eachother.
Dale giving Darrell a rocking chair was definitely a rib/joke - Cause Dale was a jokester/prankster behind the scenes in the sport just ask Rusty and many others
I always thank Dale for hiring DW to drive the 1 while Steve recovered. That stint lit a 🔥 in him. It was like the DW of old. He was having fun, he was smiling, hanging with his best pal.....wish it lasted longer. Thanks Dale for doing that.
Back then I was working for ARCA. Our Saturday race was rained out, and was to run after the Cup race on Monday. Between the regular Monday traffic and those who were coming back for the race, it caused some Cup officials to be late. I had the pleasure of working turn 2 as a track spotter and corner flagman (just the yellow, of course). I got to wave DW off on the parade laps for his last race. You hang around racing long enough, and you get to do these little things that don't mean much to others, but they all add up to a big deal to me.
What a great retirement presentation for one of NASCAR's best. 2000 was such a fantastic season in the history of the sport, and was a peak that we will never see again. Unfortunately, the NAPA 500 the next day marked the end of an era, as we all know what happened at the start of the next season...
well may have been sad but Dale died doing what he really loved, if u can die doing what you're passionate about u can go 2 heaven smiling and he certainly did.
Just a great piece, classy hard fighting competitors, that battled every week, and they wouldn’t want it any other way. Professional Sports today, as a whole, should watch this tribute to Darrell, listen and learn a lot from these greats on decency, humility and what it means to be humble.
I'm probably one of the only people that can tell you thumbs up for the Eddie Marshall profile pic I had a nice Convo with him years ago at Middletown about how he drove Syracuse amazing guy.
This was a nice little ceremony. A lot of fun with no one taking themselves too serious. If this would happen today, every driver would have a PR person standing beside them to make sure they mentioned their sponsors and took a swig of Coke at the right time.
Thank you for posting this, great to see all the stars and heros of our past days. Being a Bill Elliott fan my whole life, I'm glad he paid his respect as he does
I was there that weekend was on my honeymoon with my first wife I remember how extremely cold it was all weekend and through the next week there in Atlanta the race was rained out Sunday so they raced on a very cold and cloudy Monday I don't think the temperature ever made it over 35 the entire weekend
God, Jerry and Sugar Bear and I will always thar Darryl Waltrip would have to have been able to use their rockets on the porch. The Oppermans from Texas will always love and miss you Dale Earnhardt Sr, your fans forever
I would've loved to see how Darrell walltirp was when he was winning races and if you think about it im pretty sure Dale Sr would've given Darrell walltirp and change to drive his car full time as a 4th driver.
It's sad that Dale and Darrell never got to have that rocking chair ride.
Maybe some day...
Feb. 18 2001 that was DW. DE. Day I can still hear Darrell saying I just hope Dale's ok.....biggest day in Fox sports history!!!

"I used to drive for this guy and he FIRED me..." That's a helluva way to start off a goodbye speech for your friend, Dale. 🤣🤣🤣
I shed a small tear when Dale talked about sitting in the rocking chairs :(

I don't think anyone had any idea.

It's almost eerie to hear Dale talking about retiring and being 50 years old and knowing he would be gone in less then 4 months from this day.

Oh man 😭 that dale interview
damn how great it would have been for dale and dw to go into the fox broadcast booth together for 20 years, had dale made it past that turn 4
would've been something but Dale at least died doing what he truly loved doing, he left the world happy.
Such great drivers in this video. RIP Dale Earnhardt. Wish he was still with us.

The world and Nascar so badly needs this kind of sportsmanship and grace again..
I was at that race! good memories as a kid with my dad.
Feels weird that all this happened a few weeks before I was even born
And Earnhardt sits in the rocking chair!!!!
Great upload, thank you!
Hey do you have DW: A Champion's Salute that aired after the race?
Dale and DW on Fox...would've changed sports broadcasting
What a time!
Saddest thing on my mind is that Dale had less than 90 days to live when this was taken.
Damn I miss Dale.
I'm so sad when Dale never joined FOX with DW.
19 years later he has left nascar for good 😢 never will watch a race on fox normaly again

Good gosh, how may times has Terry been spun at Bristol as the leader? LOL Btw, you have a NASCAR last name. Any relation to Randy?
At least 3...and Terry won 1 of those in spite of that

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo a cd...
@joe lajoie do you have the entire Sunday rain delay broadcast? I recorded it when they started airing the 92 hooters 500.
How about Cale Yarborough. Did Cale Call DW JAWS
Why no Richard Petty or Bobby Allison? I guess it was current drivers only.
I’m sure they gave Darrell something private
Bye x2
2nd best pure driver ever in my opinion! Only the silver fox was better!
It was about time Missouri fired Larry Smith.
poor dale
what are you gonna do? pay me back my $200,000...😅?!
Thank goodness his big bragging on himself mouth is gone..
He's a smart ass.
Sure miss the old time drivers. Never be as good as it was then. Now Nascar su*ks. My opinion
DW was one of the best stock car drivers won 7 in a row at Bristol Tennessee nobody’s ever done that and never will !!!!
