This was the first table top baseball game I ever played. My Dad replayed the 1927 season and taught me to play as a 7 year old and I was hooked for life. Played APBA and Strat-o-Matic as I grew older. Thank you for this video.
That's great! Having a connection to the hobby through a parent or a child would make this hobby even that much greater. Unfortunately, I don't have that extra connection. BTW, I have 1927 in classic Replay. :-)
Even as a non tabletop baseball player, I enjoyed listening to this and have great respect for what Replay does for the tabletop/sim gamer. As you indicated toward the end, it's like they know us, or get us. Good objective, balanced take, but the sounds of things, and the right blend of information and opinion, which as you said just serves to inform those like-minded and/or even of a differing opinion about what they like/don't like about a game, what they're getting into when they get a game. I might like to do similar for some hockey games in the future.
Nice work-Replay cards and dice is no worse than the second best sim out there, in my opinion. You’ve covered a lot of important elements that gamers should know about. Well done.
Great video! I have never played Replay but your video is very helpful to knowing more about it. I may try the PC version at some point. I am intrigued that you can use it for stats on other games.
Replay baseball to be just feels like real baseball. As you play more games you will begin to see the little things that makes this game a gem. Cards are great quality and the ratings especially fielding are accurate.. if you can afford both cards and dice and the PC version then you will have a lot of flexibility in running a season or tournament
Absolutely nailed it. Replay PC is my game of choice now and I have played the all. Blows other PC games out of the water but I do agree that the issue with some of the results being predetermined is a minus. Really enjoyed your video. Not sure if it was because you were echoing my sentiments, Completely…Lol Thanks
Lol. Thanks. I, like a lot of people, wish Stratomatic would up their PC game from the 1990's model to a more Replayish like standard. :-) Appreciate the comment.
I couldn’t agree more with your analysis of the game engines, Randomness and the surprise element for me are the most important to eliminate getting burn’t out after a period of time. The thing I like about Strat, You can start a Pitcher 5- games in a row, And have different results in every game, The randomness is designed perfectly to be fairly accurate to a player’s actual Stats along with being very unpredictable at the same time. You’ll notice on most of the Strat player Cards, That there’s usually one column on both the Batter’s or the Pitchers card that has random results, And in some cases its more than one column. Along with the 50/50 chance in the game for each card you also get the combination of the two dice result in the column for the players to preform to their abilities. In my testing over the years the 2-Dice combination result is more accurate in the particular columns that rate the player’s ability than any other game engines. Combined Dice totals have a higher percentage of accuracy. Thanks and Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Very well put. I definitely agree. That strikeout on number 6 in-between a whole column of homeruns and doubles can be exciting. Lol 😆 And Strat definitely has a strong reputation of being an accurate baseball simulation.
Good insight! I've noticed that you and I tend to agree on more things than we disagree on. I agree with the PC version being the best, but I've not been able to like the C&D version. I've only played a handful of games, so I might not have given it a fair shake. May have to go back and revisit C&D sometime.
The good thing about Replay is that the PC version is a VERY good representation of the cards & dice. So, unless you're a nut like me who feels like they have to have actual cards on the table, the PC will probably give you a good tabletop game feel. :-)
The PC game is indeed wonderful. Whenever you decide to try the cards and dice version I think you will find it's not bad at all. Inside Pitch cards and dice is the game that I struggle with. :-)
@@DaveGardnervideos Yeah, you sort of need to know the C&D version to get the PC version. Plus the PC version just doesn't seem very intuitive to me. However, Inside Pitch is a great game and one day I will take the time to work it out. :-)
Replay Baseball is my most played sim game by far for some time now. Your review covered most if not all things good and bad I would say about the game. Now is the game perfect? Well if you play the PC version and play vs the AI well it could be better and it would be nice if some features were added that would further help the AI out. Also eh there are bugs I find that are surprising to me to find at times. Recently I went 14 innings with a starting pitcher and for some reason despite him completing the game he was not credited with a win. Also with the encyclopedia addon I have seen some things related to stat tracking that seems to be off. To me these things are very fixable and hopefully when I send off more information in the future to the tech support team they can sort it out. Now is it enough to keep me from playing? No. Anyway eh thanks for your review. Happy gaming.
Seems like the guys at Replay are pretty responsive to trying to fix things, especially on the PC game, so I think once you get them the info, they will try to get them fixed. :-)
I never see anyone mention Dynasty League. I’ve been playing it every since there was an article about it in the Star Tribune with the designer and Paul Molitor playing it. This was over 30 years ago. Just did a draft with my dad last weekend and started a new season.
I’ve only played SOM on and off since 1968 and was curious to try a few other games to see if they match up with SOM . After seeing your videos on APBA and Replay I know now NOT to get those games. One big reason why-you said the dice numbers were similar when 66 or high and low numbers are same results for every hitter and you have to check the book or charts for a result. I like the results from the cards and don’t like looking up results on charts or books. I like the randomness of SOM because the same dice roll is different for each player. You mentioned another game that’s similar to APBA and Replay so now I know those 3 games aren’t for me and makes me think SOM is still the number 1 game . I didn’t want to buy those games without knowing how the games play. You answered it for me because those games would’ve just been on my shelf collecting dust and a waste of money. If you like those games more power to you like you said but for me I will stay with SOM baseball and football. I really like your table top talk videos and keep them coming.
Hey Jerry, glad I could be of service. Lol. I too am very grateful for the youtubers who show off the various games to help us make informed choices. I have been thinking about buying APBA football for almost a year now, and the videos of others playing and talking about it have been a BIG help. BTW, I agree with what you said about Strat. It is my number one go-to game for the reasons you mentioned... but I enjoy the other games on occasion as well. Just me. :-)
I hear you 1000% on if you could play the same season 10x, even with the same weather and everything else, you'd get different results every time (at least slightly different and sometimes even greatly different, I think).
@@TheReplayGamer games of inches. These are games of inches. So many hockey games end with a 1-goal difference either way. It could come down to a bad penalty call or a missed penalty call for either team. Too much can happen. Too many variables.
I'm usually in the minority on this topic with Replay baseball but the very limited effects of left/right splits in this game keep me from playing it more often. There is a generic platoon advantage on the 3-6 roll but aside from a block on 2 on some cards having splits, it plays more like Strat basic. Also, it seems a little backward to start with the batter and then see if the pitcher can stop the hit. After all, in baseball the pitcher starts the action. (Which they do in Payoff and Inside Pitch). The PC interface is the best hands down. Just my 2 cents. I always enjoy your content.
Thanks 😊 I actually agree. The Lefty/Right splits is one thing that I failed to mention in the review. It's not a deal breaker for me but it is a concern. There is enough L/R for me to live with, but I prefer more like there is in Strat for example.
Totally agree with the fact that Replay's approach to lefty/righty splits leaves much to be desired. Lefty/Righty matchups are the essence of MLB, IMO, and if a game fails to provide an accurate representation of that fact, it's a non-starter for me. For example, awhile back I purchased the Replay's updated 1972 set, hoping to get back into the game. I'm always impressed by the quality of Replay's game components, but when I started dissecting the cards, I was very disappointed by what I found regarding lefty/righty splits. In 1972, the Pirates featured three prominent LHBs (Oliver, Hebner, and Davalillo) who all hit much better against LHP in 1972, but you would never know that looking at their cards. In the end, I'm never going to play a game because it has the best game components, or the prettiest computer interface, if the game engine doesn't meet my criteria at least as well as other games on the market
@@joelanderson8968 I actually prefer Replay’s approach to L/R splits. It’s way over-emphasized in too many games, IMO; Replay “feels” more realistic to me. Not too much, not too little, just right.
Baseball Demos, I’ve been having the same thought with regards to the at-bats starting with the hitter. It seems like it should be the other way around. That said, I am looking at trying it.

what does the f mean on the pitcher card in column 4? I can't figure that out.
Means it's a fielding check
