- Tom Selleck won an Emmy for his portrayal of Thomas Magnum, a charming private detective who lives in Hawaii on the estate of an absentee millionaire. Though a bit of a rascal, Magnum investigates his cases with skill, deftly moving about an island that is luxurious, exotic, and sometimes dangerous. Successfully blending doses of action, mystery, irreverent comedy, and poignant drama, this series became one of the biggest hits in television history and afforded Selleck and his characterization iconic status.

This show had some real twists and turns. I remember not seeing this one coming at all. Add to that the feeling that when you turned the show on each week, you never knew what you were going to get, comedy, action, tragedy, war drama, buddy drama, family drama, romance, supernatural spookiness, spoof, parody, crossover... The show took risks, such as being willing to be good natured and then switch to really dark, allowing its title character to not only be flawed and vulnerable but occasionally lose, breaking the 4th wall, developing running plotlines at a time where one and done episodic formats were the norm, showing its title character commit a cold blooded killing (Ivan in season 3 'Did You See the Sunrise'). It put weight into its supporting characters and continued to develop well into its run. It IS iconic, and for good reason. A lot of things came together, and it had that quality of lightning in a bottle.

Best show of the 80's. I watched every episode , never got old.

One of my favorite Magnum scenes.
The earlier seasons of Magnum were pretty good, in that they were mystery based. Very well written.
REBOOT IS JOKE. MacGyver and Magnum, classics, for EVER
Absolutely adore Higgins .. quite often he would say something quite profound ... deep meaningful and well over Magnams Ken...

There was a time TH-cam allowed full episodes, but then they stopped it due to copyright infringements. If there was to be any episodes shown in full, it would have to be rented or purchased.
So much better than the REBOOT. The reboot is a joke. They have Juliette Higgins partnering with Magnum. Can't dot hat. The writting is laughable...they even forgot about the "lads" maybe in the 2nd season...heh...the "lads" must be so hungry....
THe ogiginal carefully created the characters creatively. The reboot is forgetting about Hawaiian culture...the people...the new Magnum only competes in kayak races once ever servaral episodes...mayb once a season?? heh...no more TC flying his helicopter...heh...what happened to TC's Island Hopper business in the reboot??? LOL!!
