I've always loved this song. Some people might not realize that when this song came out in the early 70s, there were a LOT of TV shows about cowboys and Indians -- Westerns. The Big Valley, the Virginian, the High Chaparral, Gunsmoke, Bonanza and even Kung Fu were very popular Westerns of that time or shortly before. This song "Half-Breed" fit right in with those songs, yet had a topic of cultural significance as racism was such a big topic then (and now).
Being half Navajo/Diné I find this song to be pretty catchy ngl. The visuals in the video may not be accurate but you cannot deny how beautiful Cher is and how talented she is too ❤
Always will love Cher, now and for all time. I sat next to her in Atlantic City at Resorts right on the the side seating near stage. Beautiful woman then and still drop dead gorgeous. This is an album I still have and will always love this song. One of my all time favorites by Cher. Still listening to it in 2024. She is a diva for sure. Go Cher!
i'm just 25% native and i still don't know much of the native side..the government offers funds to those of us 1/4 native but i don't want money i just want the truth.
Half breed doesn't only apply to Indians. Lots of mix raced kids get bugged for being mixed race. It's sad. Really. I loved that song. It's too bad. Songs become offensive but ya just can't forget them.
Sorry, as a little rural girl, in the early 70's I loved this exotic video on Sonny & Cher, loved she was, what we thought Indian and that was super cool. There was NO one like her in my little small town, we learned to love her and people like her from this exposure. However, if you read her book, she was Armenian - American, she didn't have it easy looking so different than her white family. I still feel after finding later in my teens and being so disappointed she wasn't American Indian, if this was the only way to get it out about her journey back then why not??? I am pretty certain, getting her word out as an Armenian American wouldn't have been allowed by TV producers in that era.
@@krisa8649 I didn't understand what the fuss about being mixed race was. I knew some mixed race kids. However they say they have problems with identity. That's easy to understand. Too bad because they look so beautiful. There are some mixed race kids who you wouldn't know were mixed race because they look more like one side or the other. I am serious. I have met these people. they are beautiful. Kim Kardashian is Armenian American as well. Kardashian? Sarkisian? Now I get it.
Watching the Sonny & Cher Show in 1973, even as a 13 year old, seeing her do this on probably a Wednesday night, I learned what a hot woman was. Her smile at the end is the best.
You are my namesake (Cheryl Lynn), I am only 1/3 Cherokee, but I love this song. I had your doll when I was little and your hair was really long. I went into Orbach's ( remember that store?) and I put both my Cher doll and my Wonder Woman doll down, they were both stolen quickly. I am now 45 and I still miss the doll of you Cher.
Cher is also 1/3 Cherokee as well. Her dark features is from Armenian side. I thought she was half Cherokee because of that. I'm also 1/3 Indigenous Australian but as white as snow :)
I used to think Cher was a Native American, but she is in fact, Armenian. But important to remember that both cultures have suffered greatly in history.
Written and performed by non-Natives, it is a classic "Tragic mulatto" narrative, from a non-Native perspective, of a young woman with a white father and an alleged Cherokee mother. The song offers a scenario in which the singer relates that oppressive whites call her "Indian squaw", and claims that Native Americans do not accept her as one of their own because, "The Indians said I was white by law." The lyrics are in error, as the Cherokee (like most Indigenous peoples of the Eastern Woodlands) are a matrilineal culture, meaning that a child born to a Cherokee mother is accepted as Cherokee, no matter the nationality or ethnicity of the father, and thus the parental ethnicities would have to be reversed-a white mother and native father-for such a situation to arise.
Theres never been a more gorgeous body on a woman, and she was 100%, unalterd woman. Or many more beautiful period. A her talent is unseen today. Great singer, entertainer, fantastic actress, comedian. You don't see that today. I was lucky to have grown up in that great era.
