This was a 1979 promotional video for Cher's roller boogie single "Hell on Wheels," from her Prisoner album. It aired on late-night TV on NBC on a show called The Midnight Special. As awesome as Cher looks and sounds in this video what's even more amazing is the fact that she filmed it with a broken arm. Some of those men in the video are dancers and drag performers from Cher's live shows at the time (you can see them playing Bette Midler and Diana Ross in the concert footage, "Cher in Monte Carlo," here on YT. You might also be able to spot some of the Village People in this Hell on Wheels vid.
So glad this is back and remastered! As a bartender, I've been showing this video at a NYC gay bar for years now, and when it was taken down, I couldn't find a good replacement. Well, the Superstar has been around since she was 18 or 19 years old, despite the fact that she was discouraged by many people because she looked too ethnic with her American Indian looks and most popular celebrities in show business and magazines were blonde back then. in 1969 she was told by the editors of the fashion magazine Vogue that she couldn't be on the cover of the magazine because of her dark looks, yet in 1970 she appeared in the front cover of Vogue with her black raving shiny hair and high cheek bones.

I love this song! I could see this as a 1979 hit (like Take Me Home) if she had just promoted it more on live tv. I’m telling you, promoting songs on live tv helps. It’s part of how other songs like Believe and Strong Enough were so big.
"Holdin' Out For Love". (1979) "Hell on Wheels" is a disco song performed by American singer-actress Cher from her sixteenth studio album, Prisoner. It was written by Bob Esty and Michele Aller and produced by Esty. Guess this was reissued because it was remastered. A good song back then.
This video was played on the Midnight Special a couple times when it was released. The disco backlash had started by then so it was getting tougher to score disco hits at the time. Besides, Cher was really wanting to record more rock. Cher had an agreement with Casablanca that if she recorded disco like they wanted, they would let her do a rock album. Hence, the Black Rose lp which was her 3rd Casablanca album.

We still need bang bang my baby shot me down, gypsys tramps and thieves, half breed, dark lady, walking in Memphis, one by one, strong enough, All or nothing, dove la more, the musics no good without you, song for the lonely, alive again, you haven’t seen the last of me, and stop crying your heart out. A lot of these r on Cher Fan Clubs channel, but we still need them here. And not as premiers so they get the views they deserve!!!

This song is so underrated and the video so good for the time it came out! Can’t understand why it wasn’t a top ten hit.
Yep this is Cher in my earlier days I've always been a fan of hers she is a legend she is one of a kind she is Cher took me a while to find this song but thank God I found it reminds me of my earlier days which me and Cher not that old we're still in our prime I Love you Cher a fan forever and always Wanda Smith 👏😇🕊️💖❤️🙏💕
Finally the hidden music video is on the spotlight !!!
This song/video should’ve been a HUGE HIT
"Take Me Home" just before this was. Unfortunately the stupid disco backlash was starting to take off around this time.
It was moderately successful, but this Cher music video from 1980 was one of the first ones before MTV arrived on the music TV scene in the summer of 1981.
I still can't believe I had never seen this before. I am obsessed.
Chér has to be one of coolest women in history! There is nothing she can’t do!
Aesthetics of the late 70´s/early 80´s were so great. And Cher in this bodysuit is the personification of hot.
Cher was, is and will remain super hottttt.
The editing! The hot gays! The outfits! This song! The Cher! This is heaven on wheels.
I’m confused..Where has this video been all of my life? I love it!
Roller buggy...solo fui a ver esa peli porque linda Blair salía en minifalda y mis amigos de barrio me contaron que al patinar la falda se levantaba...eran otros tiempos... tiempos mejores creo yo
Of course if social media and streaming existed back then - WoW!
Radio play was an even more important factor. Radio airplay is still an essential for Billboard charting.
@@NOVELBITES Yes! I still follow Billboard Hot 100 (which you can do on TH-cam now). Currently, they use streaming (which includes TH-cam videos), radio & sales to tally the rankings. Streaming does seem the dominant force today, if you analyze Spotify and other streaming services rankings (which feed into Billboard).
Budweiser showing their support much earlier than we remember.
Drag Queens in a 70's Video? Thank You Cher 💚
I absolutely loved this song when came out! I was a senior in high school so it was around '78-79. Thank you for posting this I haven't seen this video in decades.
Are you saying you actually saw it on t.v. somewhere at some point?!
@@alexkx8599 yeppers I saw the video. PreMTV videos was just starting we a program called Midnight Special late night at 1130 on Friday that had live acts and would show videos
Cher in her young good old days .
This is proof that Cher has a vault of unreleased music somewhere. She’ll just drop a song here, a video there, blow our minds and probably get a kick out of it.
Her success lays in her eclectic range of music. From ballad, to rock, to easy listening to torch songs from the Great American Songbook..
And that is a true fact
Cher did this video with a broken arm. How the hell did she skate so effortlessly? She backwards skated and did spins...such a Roller Mama!
If this was me, one of my rollerskate wheels would find a stone on the road, and I'd end up in a body cast.
No doubt! Me too!😅🛼
#fallingbadlywithstyle
Proof dummy?
Do you think she looks like that at 75? Most likely a double and green screen used.
@@timbragg4546 The video was produced in 1979. It was just remastered and re-released.
Bro I was doing joi jury’s with with one arm broken and I still gave people hard time..even more so!!!
Y do you think?
Cause I got one fucken arm now that’s why!!!
Grow some balls!!!!
all those men are looking at her thinking, "Gurl, that is some on point Cher drag!"
I swear down I thought this was a new retro kind of song out at the moment from cher and she was just a bit airbrushed for the video, as every artist is doing the disco vibe right now and then I saw comments saying it's from 1979 ! She really is amazing and has an amazing plastic surgeon as she looks fab even now considering I thought this was a new music video x
absolute legend x forever love you cher thank you for inspiring me to be the singer I am today xx
Everybody say "Jaaaaack"
(McFarland)
Perfect song that I didn't know.
Cher is not only not getting old. She's getting Younger.
I almost forgot something! Cher should totally post all her other music videos! Let’s see, looks like she has the music videos for save up all your tears, love and understanding, woman’s world, I hope you find it (lyric video), take it like a man (7th heaven remix), sos, believe, chiquitita (Spanish version), happiness is just a thing called joe, and hell on wheels posted. Hold up, where’s the others?! Song for the lonely, I found someone, half breed, dark lady, turn back time!! Those have got to be posted, right guys??
Update: we have if I could turn back time, I found someone, we all sleep alone, the shoop shoop song, and I got you babe with beavis and butthead. Cher is hotter than the core of the sun
I still have the vinyl single of this, one 🕜 f my favorites!!! Thank you Cher!!!
I AM YOUR GUIDING STAR...
This video is EVERYTHING 🤩🤩🤩 Cher looks and sounds incredible! What a legend! The only thing that could possibly make this song any better is a remix/update by Carpenter Brut IMHO 🤟🏼😎💖
What a wild time to be alive: (1970's-1980's.)
It was featured in the beginning of the movie "Roller Boogie"
