Once again Cher was a pioneer in the music industry. This video was made before there was MTV .

@@silentrage8961 Not a stupid comment, esp. as it was still rare to make these kind of music promos. Cher and Olivia Newton John were among the first woman to cut such music films for their singles outside of Scopitones and the like. In both cars, (Olivia for the hit A LITTLE MORE LOVE) shows the record labels likely thought it was worth the expense to do such films with such big names.

This was a 1979 promotional video for Cher's roller boogie single "Hell on Wheels," from her Prisoner album. It aired on late-night TV on NBC on a show called The Midnight Special. As awesome as Cher looks and sounds in this video what's even more amazing is the fact that she filmed it with a broken arm. Some of those men in the video are dancers and drag performers from Cher's live shows at the time (you can see them playing Bette Midler and Diana Ross in the concert footage, "Cher in Monte Carlo," here on YT. You might also be able to spot some of the Village People in this Hell on Wheels vid.

People lose their minds over this video - they're like Stefon from Saturday Night Live, "it's got horses, drag queens, leather daddies, Cher on roller skates, chickens, horses, big trucks, cigarettes and Carrot Top." Well, the Superstar has been around since she was 18 or 19 years old, despite the fact that she was discouraged by many people because she looked too ethnic with her American Indian looks and most popular celebrities in show business and magazines were blonde back then. in 1969 she was told by the editors of the fashion magazine Vogue that she couldn't be on the cover of the magazine because of her dark looks, yet in 1970 she appeared in the front cover of Vogue with her black raving shiny hair and high cheek bones.

This one was in their rotation, The Police's "Message In a Bottle", Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" (the red dress version), Alice Cooper's "How You Gonna See Me Now", Supertramp's "Goodbye Stranger", Gary Numan's "Cars", M "Pop Muzik", David Bowie's "D.J." were all like in constant rotation. I'd been trying and trying to remember the name of a Cher-on-roller-skates video my b.f. and I saw at the Midnight Sun in San Francisco in what must have been about 1982. When the clip was over, the b.f. turned to me and said in my ear (so I could hear him over the crowd noise) "That was one QUEER video!!" It was this one, of course. And Cher, of course, was and is fabulous.

"Holdin' Out For Love". (1979) "Hell on Wheels" is a disco song performed by American singer-actress Cher from her sixteenth studio album, Prisoner. It was written by Bob Esty and Michele Aller and produced by Esty. Guess this was reissued because it was remastered. A good song back then.

This video was played on the Midnight Special a couple times when it was released. The disco backlash had started by then so it was getting tougher to score disco hits at the time. Besides, Cher was really wanting to record more rock. Cher had an agreement with Casablanca that if she recorded disco like they wanted, they would let her do a rock album. Hence, the Black Rose lp which was her 3rd Casablanca album.
