    Mormusk ended up becoming a very important person for my character. My character Javin, a Demogorgon Warlock wanted to help Mormusk so he prayed to his Patron, Javin was horrified at the prospect of living for eternity in undeath without magic, now that he had felt the power and pleasure of wielding magic he can not imagine life without it, so he pitied Mormusk and prayed to Demogorgon to give Mormusk back the ability to cast spells. Demogorgon agreed and turned Mormusk into a deadlock, I think it was called, basically a undead warlock who only ehm, live to serve it's evil master. Just as the transformation happens Javin see the little sliver of humanity Mormusk had managed to keep die and he realized what he had done.
    This added two extra play sessions as Mormusk now was a dangerous enemy, far more dangerous that Nezzy himself, and we had to stop him, but this was also the first time my Warlock saw the price he might have to pay for his powers. You see Javin is Fiend Pacted but he is a good kid, he is kind and have a rather naive view of things but in both realizing that he had robbed Mormusk of the last bit of humanity, which broke his heart, and also realizing this is what he could end up becoming one day, was his first inkling that oh shit I am serving somethign really, really evil.
    For the first fight we had with Mormusk after his transformation javin was just on the floor bawling his eyes out, but later he took full part in the hunt for the undead spellcaster and he was also the one to deliver the final blow, begging Mormusk for forgiveness as he did so, not for ending him, that was a mercy but for in trying to help him, ending up taking something so precious from him. Needless to say it became a rather memorable encounter and one of the most important NPC's for Javin's development this far. My young warlock have come from the whole thing rather traumatized.
    A quote from Legacy of Kain seam most appropriate to how Javin feel about the whole thing:
    "In the depts of that dark forest I found something worse than hell, a vision of what I was becoming."

    Thanks for the guide Fred! My group are 7 sessions into LMoP with the 8th taking place in a couple of weeks. They are currently in Wave Echo Cave and the last session ended on cliffhanger with the party about to enter The Wizard’s Quarters, already sensing a cold deathly presence different to the ghouls and skeletons that they have already experienced. My tactics for Mormesk are that he will threaten the party immediately, assuming that they are in league with the Black Spider (who in my game is a stronger female drow called Nezzaria, or Nezzie for short). Mormesk will give the party an opportunity to negotiate, but if the party put a foot wrong, he will use Life Drain on the closest party member with the lowest Constitution score. Regardless of whether the attack works, Mormesk will use incorporeal movement to fly straight through that party member and another to scare the daylights out of them. On Mormesk's second turn, he will use his incorporeal movement to move through the walls of the Quarters and disappear. It is up to the party to decide whether or not to try and find him or proceed through the cave and return to him at a later time, unaware that Mormesk will ambush them at a time of his choosing later on. I have warned the party that the risk of character death, particularly in this area of Wave Echo Cave, is very high. Hoping this goes well!

    I'm loving this series. Just the right creation of a quality filled with useful information. The added feature of rotating various images is an exceptional touch to add to an already detail-oriented production. Fabulous job. Enjoy each and every episode and now a avid consumer of your channel.

    Something I've been wondering as my players are approaching this part of the campaign: If Mormesk is willing to strike a deal with the players where he parts with some of his treasure in exchange for the players defeating the spectator, this suggests he is interested in the Forge of Spells-presumably either because it is magical and Mormesk wants to be in "possession" of magical things, or because with it he could harnass the magic to potentially return to a corporeal form (or something of that nature).
    But Nezznar *also* wants the spectator defeated, so why wouldn't Mormesk be willing to strike the same kind of deal with Nezzar? In fact, Nezznar might welcome the alliance and see Mormesk as a powerful friend. Given that Mormesk is interested in magic, Mormesk might also be interested in learning Nezznar's magical secrets, etc.
    So why would Mormesk be willing to bargain with the players, but view Nezznar antagonistically, when, from Mormesk's point of view, all three parties kind of want the same thing?

    • @GiantInsects
      @GiantInsects 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually even as I'm writing this out I'm realizing that Mormesk COULD have made a similar deal with Nezznar, but Nezznar has not been able to actually defeat the spectator. So from Mormesk's POV, whoever defeats the spectator first wins his favor. And until then, he views everyone with equal suspicion.

      ^ This race to dissuade them from allying is much more interesting than anything in the cave as laid out in the adventure.

    Little off topic lol BUT ive made an NPC basically a travelling merchant whom the players have access to and youve inspired me. His name is Fredrik Goodswheeler (came up with that on the spot and jus ran with it lol) Me listening to your videos is practice for his voice im giving him ur accent. If you were to add one or two Wizard cantrips to Mormesk’s attack options, what would you choose?

    • @ParadoxCircuit

      Chill Touch seems thematic and useful. Maybe increase the slow if you want to make it stronger, or bump the damage to 2d8 + whatever from 1d8.

    If the Wraith can hide in walls and floors indefinitely, why not just have him hide in the ground and pop an arm out every so often to attack the players legs? Seems like it might create an interesting situation tactically.

      Wraiths have Incorporeal Movement. They can move through an object or another creature, but can't stop there.

    • @ParadoxCircuit
      @ParadoxCircuit 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jayfehr In the video he talks about Mormesk not having Incorporeal Movement (the ability), but it seems to be assumed that he can pass through objects, since Mormesk makes his appearance by rising out of the ground.
      My thoughts are that if he is in the ground when the players enter the room, and he waits for the right moment to leave the ground, the likelihood he spends more than 6 seconds underground is extremely high, which indicates a high probability that he can stay inside objects indefinitely.
      Is there something I'm missing?
      EDIT: To be clear, Mormesks stat block is not the same and does not have the same abilities as a standard wraith.

    • @ParadoxCircuit
      @ParadoxCircuit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jayfehr Ah I see now that it does have a modified version of the ability. I was working off of my assumptions based on what Jeff said in the video.
      That being said I still think that a wraith being able to attack through the walls is both interesting tactically, and incredibly thematic and evocative. Therefore I'll probably just house rule Mormesk to be able to hang out inside an object for a few rounds before he starts taking damage.

    • @HowtoRPG

    I was really confused by how much emphasis is put on talking to Mormesk when he really has very little of interest to say (unless you metagame that your low level party knows what a spectator is). All his dialogue is about making a trade for treasure but at this point of the adventure, every party is probably stinking rich and looking to take the forge, not hand it to either antagonist in the cave. The DM is encouraged to try to make some kind of treasure for killing deal that the players don't care about and it's hugely wasteful of time, especially considering that both the Skull and Spectator are in mamy ways more difficult to kill than Mormesk (depending on your party). Meanwhile allying with the Spider against Mormesk is much more doable...but is something very few good or Rockseeker aligned parties are willing to do.
    This should be the other way around - that the (doomed) alliance with Mormesk is the more useful of the two.
    The whole thing seems really badly written.
